#1: Continuity Be Damned!

Posted on 2005-10-14 14:56:12 by Cappy Morgan

Okay, I'm disapointed in this casting decision. If they are going to even
keep minute parts of what made the cinema Bond successful, Craig is going to
look severely out of place.

Now, with that said, what about continuity? This is Bond's first mission,
yet they keep the same M and Q from Brosnan's adventures. In DAD, say what
you will, but they recognized and celebrated all of the Bond adventures. We
assume this is the same Bond all along. Now, that is all out the window. I
find that rather disrespectful of the fans.

Don't worry, in the last scene of the last ever film we'll discover it's
*all* been the MI6 office cleaner staying late at work and playing about
with the DAD holodeck glasses.

Honest.

It's been reported that Michael Wilson said at the press conference
that 'Q' will not appear and it isn't yet certain whether Judi Dench

I saw the conference. They are hoping M will be back in the shape of
Judi Dench, but Q and Moneypenny are not in the script at this time.

Excuse me for venting on an open forum about James Bond and feeling
passionate about the biggest topic to come down the JB pike since 2002. I
guess I could follow along with the constant retreads that dominate in the
newsgroup. So, "who is your favorite Bond, your favorite movie, what nail
polish did Riggs wear, what is Lazenby's shoe size, let's pick on that Scojo

You wonder how that will register with the mainstream audience? I'll tell
you how it'll register with the mainstream audience: Casino Royale's box
office returns will make License To Kill look like a blockbuster success.
Craig will WISH he was an unknown actor again.

I never thought I'd see the day when EON would sink to this. I mean, Bond is
a formula. It's pretty hard to screw it up. You just plug in the ingredients
and make a film every two or three years. It can't be that hard. And yet
when Michael and Barbara (whose efforts, particularly since Cubby's death,
I've really enjoyed) finally decide to go "radical", they do it in all the
worst possible ways imagineable. When they could've gotten a bigger name
director with a vision, they went with Martin Campell (who turned in very
good work in Goldeneye). When they could've gotten a better looking, better
known name at a reasonable price with a hit tv show for a following (Julian
McMahon), they went with Daniel Craig. When they could've gone retro and
made it a period piece set against the history of the Cold War and 1950's
politics and society, they decided to keep it contemporary. When they
could've gone younger, as we were led to believe they wanted to, in order to
compete with Jason Bourne, they went with a guy who is 37 years old but
looks 47. How in the hell do you go from Pierce Brosnan to Daniel Craig and
expect the audience to just follow? They're rebooting the series, yet hoping
to keep Judi Dench. They want to shake up the series, yet they keep the same
writers. I mean, none of this adds up. It just doesn't.

This casting is going to go down as one of the biggest boneheaded decisions
in the history of mankind, right along with David Caruso leaving NYPD Blue
after one year for a film career, or Michael Dukakis' decision to pose for a
photo op while riding around in a battle tank with a helmet on that was
twice the size of his head.

> I'm having more trouble accepting Craig as Bond than I did an invisible
> car.

Craig was the ONLY candidate that I rejected completely. Everyone else had
at least something to recommend, but not Craig. However......I was also
certain that Batman, as played by Michael Keaton, was going to be a huge
flop because Keaton could not possibly play the role, yet the moment I saw
the trailer I knew it was going to be a hit, and you know what? Michael was
great as Bruce Wayne/Batman. So, at this point, EON's damage has been done.
We don't like the decision, but it has been made, and hopefully in May or
June of '06 we'll see our first trailer for the film and we'll have
something to rally behind and be able to fully support the film.

-------------------------------------
Icebreaker
"Well, they expect a certain amount of theft, Michael. It's built into the
price. If I didn't take it, then people would be overpaying for nothing."

I'll take my share of the blame. I'm not so sure of Craig myself (see
other post), but he is a talented actor. That he can overcome the
fact that he is in stark contrast to the accepted image of Bond
rests on his and the film-makers shoulders.

I actually find the prospect of giving Bond a "kick up the arse" exciting!

Okay, just to address my DC comments. It is hard for me to switch from
Brosnan to Craig. It is just such a stark contrast. And, I admit, I am a
Brozzy fan. If that wasn't obvious.

I focused on the negative and now the positive. He is a British actor.
They seem to be maintaining a lot of CR in the movie. Bond will be grittier
and more character driven. They needed to break a bit from a very rigid
formula. They toned down the gadgets.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will somehow maintain some of the
"fun" without being too outlandish. The fact they said they are inspired by
FRWL is a good sign. How the mainstream will react to this is anyone's
guess. They seem to be drawn to the GF, TSWLM, MR and DAD of the series.
Okay, I meant more extreme elements of Bond...not comparing GF to DAD. I
personally, enjoyed both.

However, Bond has become a superhero...it is time he became more human.

>
> I actually find the prospect of giving Bond a "kick up the arse" exciting!

Agreed. I like that idea too. I've said it numerous times. But, of
course, I said that with Brosnan in the helm. Now, I just have to wait and
see.......(biting fingernails.)

Agreed. I was seriously disappointed that Brosnan would not be returning,
and until the last few weeks still held out hope. We have all been
disappointed by the series to some degree at one time or another, yes? But
that sting has lifted, and I am excited at the prospect of this new
direction. Craig looks fine (cruelly handsome) to me, I enjoyed "Layer
Cake", the concept of an early Bond is intriguing, and I am completely
prepared and excited for "Casino Royale."

Undeniably, several potential pitfalls exist, but I unreservedly trust that
the writers, director, and EON are attempting to bring a quality James Bond
film to the screen. Further, from what is known and from what I've heard of
this undeniably bold experiment within the formula, the project does have a
certain resonance. It simply feels right.

May "Casino Royale" succeed beyond our wildest dreams, and may what I
consider to be the "Second Golden Age of Bond" continue. So a sincere
welcome to the fold, Mr. Craig.

Finally, thank you Pierce Brosnan. You filled huge shoes admirably, were
the best thing about the last four films, and did the series proud for ten
years. Well done sir.

Here's hoping the same will be said of Daniel Craig.

> office returns will make License To Kill look like a blockbuster success.

What utter rubbish.

I am utterly baffled by the fan (if that is the correct term) who measures
the success of a Bond film in pounds and dollars.

> Craig will WISH he was an unknown actor again.

See above.

> I never thought I'd see the day when EON would sink to this. I mean, Bond
> is a formula. It's pretty hard to screw it up. You just plug in the
> ingredients and make a film every two or three years. It can't be that
> hard. And yet when Michael and Barbara (whose efforts, particularly since
> Cubby's death, I've really enjoyed) finally decide to go "radical", they
> do it in all the worst possible ways imagineable. When they could've
> gotten a bigger name director with a vision, they went with Martin Campell
> (who turned in very good work in Goldeneye). When they could've gotten a
> better looking, better known name at a reasonable price with a hit tv show
> for a following (Julian McMahon), they went with Daniel Craig. When they
> could've gone retro and made it a period piece set against the history of
> the Cold War and 1950's politics and society, they decided to keep it
> contemporary. When they could've gone younger, as we were led to believe
> they wanted to, in order to compete with Jason Bourne, they went with a
> guy who is 37 years old but looks 47. How in the hell do you go from
> Pierce Brosnan to Daniel Craig and expect the audience to just follow?
> They're rebooting the series, yet hoping to keep Judi Dench. They want to
> shake up the series, yet they keep the same writers. I mean, none of this
> adds up. It just doesn't.
>
> This casting is going to go down as one of the biggest boneheaded
> decisions in the history of mankind, right along with David Caruso leaving
> NYPD Blue after one year for a film career, or Michael Dukakis' decision
> to pose for a photo op while riding around in a battle tank with a helmet
> on that was twice the size of his head.

Yeah, moments that shook the world. Right up there with William Shatner
belting out "LSD."

>
Michael
> was great as Bruce Wayne/Batman. So, at this point, EON's damage has been
> done. We don't like the decision,

"We" representing whom exactly?

> but it has been made, and hopefully in May or June of '06 we'll see our
> first trailer for the film and we'll have something to rally behind and be
> able to fully support the film.

Oh, such much more fun to damn the project out of hand, right? Isn't it?

Many are supporting the project now. You might try that, it may even loosen
your bowels.

Sorry...that was inappropriate...

Anyone else want to wait until they've seen Craig as Bond? Or shall we
just continue criticising him for being non-Bond-like in roles where he,
er, wasn't playing Bond..?

>> Okay, I'm disapointed in this casting decision. If they are going to even
>> keep minute parts of what made the cinema Bond successful, Craig is going
>to
>> look severely out of place.
>>
>> Now, with that said, what about continuity? This is Bond's first mission,
>> yet they keep the same M and Q from Brosnan's adventures. In DAD, say
>what
>> you will, but they recognized and celebrated all of the Bond adventures.
>We
>> assume this is the same Bond all along.
>
>
>
>Honest.
