Wes =F0u TT Arvind hal!

> Top 10 Threads by Number of Posts

Again, a week of remarkably on-topic-ish threads. Although, of course,=20
what those innocent-looking subjects conceal within is another story.

I also notice that the 5-post limit on OCR is getting dire, with top=20
and bottom lists regularly overlapping. I'll rework the script as soon=20
as I have time.

Comrades,

Statistics revised to set the limit for OCR downwards to three from=20
five, and to eliminate two huge spam posts from the posts crunched. Is=20
there a preference for this version?

It looks like broken threading.

If the script considers only the posts within the week in question
for threading, then this can easily happen, as the various branches
of old threads can very well have lost the common ancestor from the
references header (I believe there's a limit to that -- at least many
user-agents will truncate the references). In such a case the various
brances will appear to be different threads.

The server at work has a very short retention, and at times I've had
four different Mandos threads visible in the view from that server.

<snip list>

> I always end up here... (among others!) It's because I'm succint!

Of course -- and the rest of us are (as you imply) not all that
succint (some might justifiably apply the word 'long-winded' to some
of our (read: 'my') posts, and you therefore have to include a lot of
text in order to provide context, for your own succint answer. It
makes perfect sense (it does, really it does).

> It's not because I don't snip enough! Hm, exclamation marks. It
> really must bother me.

Well, the last couple of weeks just about everyone with more than
five posts have ended up on both lists ;-)

If it really bothers you, you might consider using XNews -- by
default it gives you a warning if more than 60% of your lines are
quoted (it doesn't count bytes, but the line-count is all right for
me), and the number can be configured quite easily.

>> Volume generated: 916.2 kb
>> - headers: 551.9 kb (6,888 lines)
>> - bodies: 353.5 kb (9,481 lines)
>> - original: 187.1 kb (5,717 lines)
>> - signatures: 10.5 kb (403 lines)

I suggest that somehow it is made clear that 'original' is part of
the 'bodies' count, but that signatures are not. Something like:

Volume generated: 916.2 kb
- Headers: 551.9 kb
- Signatures: 10.5 kb
- Bodies: 353.5 kb
- Original: 187.1 kb
- Quoted: 166.4 kb

> Would it be an idea to leave the headers out?

It is a bit overwhelming, and it isn't really something we can do
anything about (well, most of them, anyway), so the information,
while interesting, is not something we can act upon (unless by
ensuring that all our messages exceed the 1.6 KB that is the average
size of headers -- quite an imposing task).

Gah! This just had me wishing for fuller stats -- mean, mode, median
quartiles, standard deviation and range for all the figures given in
the 'Averages' section. Apperently I don't get enough statistics in
my job (which is odd, because back in Uni I used to hate statistics
<GG>). I am, however, most definitely not suggesting that this be
posted -- but I think I'll get in touch with Arvind to see if it is
possible to satisfy my curiosity ;-)

So, only 79 posts in AFT if you read RABT first and kill crossposts
before downloading AFT. From 50 posts per day to 11 ;-)

> Aw, this one has suddenly become all respectable and not at all
> weird! A pity.

We'll get there yet -- we can start a thread on the identity of the
flying object seen by the Fellowship on their way down the Great
River: cross-posted, of course, to every applicable ufology group (as
well as, preferably, a couple of non-applicable ones -- there's
nothing to a cross-posted thread if we don't get a few people
complaining why the thread is posted to their group -- sci.physics is
a good place to draw the attention of crack-pots, and I assure you
that that is /not/ 'all respectable').

Wes =F0u Troels Forchhammer hal!
> If the script considers only the posts within the week in question=20
> for threading, then this can easily happen, as the various branches=20
> of old threads can very well have lost the common ancestor from the=20
> references header (I believe there's a limit to that -- at least many=20
> user-agents will truncate the references). In such a case the various=20
> brances will appear to be different threads.=20

Actually, because this happens so frequently, the original author of=20
the script set it to thread by subject (which makes sense in a way even=20
otherwise). The problem with the "Mandos" thread is that some=20
newsreaders insert spaces after colons, so there were variant subjects=20
with one, two, three, four, five and six spaces. Then because the=20
title subjects so long with five and six spaces, some newsreaders=20
automatically inserted a linebreak. So Mandos ended up as the hero of=20
nine different threads when threaded by subject (My, that lad does get=20
around).

I've had in mind making the script a little more tolerant, so that it=20
essentially combines subjects where the difference is only an extra Re:=20
or space of line break. I've not programmed actively since '91,=20
though, and I'm not that great at perl, so if anyone could give me an=20
easy way of doing this that would be great.

> I was thinking -- perhaps we ought to set the limit at four posts?=20

It didn't make much of a difference when I did, so I pushed it to=20
three. If the volume on this group increases, I'll take it back up to=20
four.

> I suggest that somehow it is made clear that 'original' is part of
> the 'bodies' count, but that signatures are not.=20

Good suggestion, I'll adopt it.

> It is a bit overwhelming, and it isn't really something we can do=20
> anything about (well, most of them, anyway), so the information,=20
> while interesting, is not something we can act upon (unless by=20
> ensuring that all our messages exceed the 1.6 KB that is the average=20
> size of headers -- quite an imposing task).=20

Well, the statistics are not *all* admonition, you know. I think the=20
fact that the figure is interesting is enough to justify leaving it in.

> Gah! This just had me wishing for fuller stats -- mean, mode, median=20
> quartiles, standard deviation and range for all the figures given in=20

The "From: " address is valid, and is checked periodically, but it=20

> I've had in mind making the script a little more tolerant, so that
> it essentially combines subjects where the difference is only an
> extra Re: or space of line break. I've not programmed actively
> since '91, though, and I'm not that great at perl, so if anyone
> could give me an easy way of doing this that would be great.

I'm not up to Perl either, but though I suspect that there might well
be a more clever way to do it in Perl using regular expressions, I'd
do it in a series of steps (I prefer to keep my programming in simple
steps -- I never seem get around to doing enough to enough
programming not to need lots of detailled debug info <G>).

1) Remove any CR and FF characters from subject.
2) Remove any "Re:" or "RE:" "re:" etc. from beginning of subject
(repeat until length of subject line doesn't change).
3) change all whitespace (greedy for several occurences) to one space
(something like "s/[ \t]+/ ")

The last can also be done in two steps without using regular
expressions.
a) change all tabs to spaces
b) change all occurences of double space to single space,
and repeat until length of subject string doesn't change.

>> I was thinking -- perhaps we ought to set the limit at four
>> posts?
>
> It didn't make much of a difference when I did, so I pushed it to
> three.

I wasn't serious! It was just that I noticed that I was pushed from
the first place in the OCR table to the fourth place by three 3-post
posters -- it was meant humorously (sorry if I didn't make that clear
enough). Self-centred I may be, but not enough to seriously want to
adjust the requirements to put myself in a better light ;-)

<snip>

> Early versions of the statistics had mode and sd in addition to
> mean and median. I stopped posting those because people
> complained that it was confusing, and I'm a little wary of adding
> them again.

Again I wasn't seriously suggesting that you do -- adding all that
information will only benefit a small minority who're familiar with
statistics. I wonder if there are any studies that have looked into
the distributions of these things?

For the number of posts per poster and thread it might be interesting
to see also the mode in addition to average and median.

> If the script considers only the posts within the week in question
> for threading, then this can easily happen, as the various
> branches of old threads can very well have lost the common
> ancestor from the references header (I believe there's a limit to
> that -- at least many user-agents will truncate the references).

Ach. If a thread goes on for "too long", my Outlook Express can't deal
with it anymore (some of you might be familiar with the ridiculous
"line 4 too long"-error). In does cases I'm guilty of breaking threads
myself. This is rare, though.

>>> Bottom 10 Posters by OCR (minimum of three posts)
> <snip list>
>> I always end up here... (among others!) It's because I'm succint!
> Of course -- and the rest of us are (as you imply) not all that
> succint (some might justifiably apply the word 'long-winded' to
> some of our (read: 'my') posts, and you therefore have to include
> a lot of text in order to provide context, for your own succint
> answer. It makes perfect sense (it does, really it does).

I know it does, I know. But I was raised in the world of
e-communication with the idea of OCR as the measure of all things good
and righteous. I had the same problem then. I like those "long-winded"
posts though, don't get me wrong. But I think you might be grateful
that I hardly do it myself :-) And if I do, it's about cognitive
science.

> If it really bothers you, you might consider using XNews -- by
> default it gives you a warning if more than 60% of your lines are
> quoted

I don't need that, since I can see when I'm doing it. But really, in
those cases I should make up unnecessary filling lines to stay out of
bottom OCR lists. I'd rather stay succint.

> Gah! This just had me wishing for fuller stats -- mean, mode,
> median quartiles, standard deviation and range for all the
> figures given in the 'Averages' section. Apperently I don't get
> enough statistics in my job (which is odd, because back in Uni I
> used to hate statistics <GG>). I am, however, most definitely not
> suggesting that this be posted -- but I think I'll get in touch
> with Arvind to see if it is possible to satisfy my curiosity ;-)

I'd love those. But I, like you, understand that I'm one of precious
few :-)

<snip repetition of threads>

Arvind was testing us? :-) I totally missed this. Mainly because I just
look at the top entries in the top/bottom 10 lists, not the bottom
entries.

Actually, I suspect some people's software is replying in such a way
that the thread ID changes. Hence Arvind's software is counting this as
three separate threads.

LOL! I don't think you wil be satisfied until the "Statistics" thread
hits number one spot for volume and number of posts...

>>> Top 2 Targets for Crossposts
>>> ============================
>>> 275 rec.arts.books.tolkien
>>> 8 alt.books.inklings
>
> So, only 79 posts in AFT if you read RABT first and kill crossposts
> before downloading AFT. From 50 posts per day to 11 ;-)

I read AFT first (because it comes first alphabetically). I think there
is a similarly small amount of non-cross-posted material. Most threads
here are cross-posted in both newsgroups.

>

Go on. I dare you! :-)

It's "delenda" and it is a "verbal adjective" (at least that's what
Latin teachers in France call it) meaning "must be destroyed".
"Tolkienology is to-be-destroyed" -> "Tolkienology must be destroyed".

bad latin seems to be a common characteristic of these weird splinter

nasty attack of it now and then, though he usually sticks to english
