#1: new posts

Posted on 2006-07-19 23:32:51 by Michael Hellman

Somewhere around a month ago, I started finding all my newsgroups almost
completely empty of new messages. I've been averaging only about three (3)
messages daily on this group, signifigantly less than the two hundred (200)
or so I had come to expect. At the same time, I started getting spam in my
OE e-mail account. My ISP is cavtel.net, and they swear that the problem
must be with Outlook Express. Has anyone else been experiencing similar
problems, either with cavtel or with OE? If anybody has any ideas, please
e-mail me, since I doubt I'll even see a reply in the newsgroup.

Thanks. :)

To avoid spam, don't post your e-mail address openly, like you have just
done! :-) Also, read about "munging" your e-mail address to avoid spam.
It is not an ideal solution, but it is one option.

First, check the number of posts you download against the number of
posts that appear on a web-based archive like Google Groups. If there is
a discrepancy, the problem is with your ISP. It almost certainly isn't a
problem with Outlook Express. The only problem I encountered with
Outlook Express was when the newgroup folders seemed to get too full, or
something. I set up new ones and it all seemed to be OK again. But that
was a total failure, not a reduction to a dribble of a few posts a day.
Hope that helps.

The last statistics post on Saturday cited 143 posts the past week --
about 20 per day. Still less than the 200, but also far from 3 ;-)

On this server I currently have 79 posts starting 18 July about 13
GMT (it's a work server with very short retention), making it about
40 per day in the most recent period, which also fits with the 275 on
Google and 280 on my news.individual.net account since 14 July.

> At the same time, I started getting spam in my OE e-mail account.

Be careful where and how you state it.

I don't experience any spam on the email address I quote in my .sig,
but elsewhere I have an e-mail address available on the www (in HTML
code) and that generates a lot of spam.

> My ISP is cavtel.net, and they swear that the problem must be
> with Outlook Express. Has anyone else been experiencing similar

When you download your three or so messages from your ISP's news-
server, try highlighting each message in turn and press Alt+enter.
This will open a window showing the properties for the message. Then
select the 'Details' tab and find the 'Xref:' header (often the last
header). This will be in the format "server.domain
news.group:number" The server reference numbers are assigned
sequentially for each newsgroup. This means that if they are in
sequence, then the server does not receive any more messages than
what you see. On the other hand, if there are gaps in the numbering
so that the numbers still progress some 20 - 50 numbers per day, then
the explanation is most likely to be found either in your OE or in
the communication between OE and the server.

In that case there could be many reasons. If you also receive
rec.arts.books.tolkien and you download that group (and read, or mark
as read, the posts there) before downloading AFT, then that may be
the reason. Or you may have some filters or other stuff in place.

I am not an expert on OE, but I've used it (and still does for my
microsoft* hierarchy, where it is often easier as many posters use MS
native encodings) and I'll happily help you if I can.

Another solution, if you find that Outlook is the likely cause, is to
ask in microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general (there are also
foreign-language variants in microsoft.public.ch.*,
microsoft.public.de.*, microsoft.public.es.* microsoft.public.fr.*,
microsoft.public.jp.*, microsoft.public.ru.* and microsoft.public.kr.
*). All these can be found also on news.microsoft.com -- a public
access server carrying only the microsoft.* hierarchy.
