#1: Ultimate DVDs

Posted on 2006-07-18 10:22:49 by Sean Black

Received my Ultimate Edition DVD set yesterday, very nice it is too.

The attache case is very nice, solidly built, combination is set to 000
000, but you can easily change it to whatever you want. No spare space
for Casino Royale though.

Only had time to have a quick scan through Dr No last night and I have
to say it looks stunning. Sound is either DD or DTS 5.1, no original
mono. So if anyone wants to know anything in particular about these, let
me know and I'll try and check it out.

Now if I can just think up a good excuse to throw a sicky for a week or
so, I might just have time to pay these the attention they deserve ;-)

Lucky bar stand.

Are you able to confirm which movies have Textless Titles as an extra?

Happy viewing.

Is there a site detailing exactly what's new and what's brought over from
the old SE DVDs? A lot of the stuff seems mighty familiar...

I got mine today

I watched FRWL. The picture quality is amazing.

I would imagine that FRWL wouldn't have textless titles. I`ve been
watching all the new extras today.

Watching Roger ham it up has Bond in 1964 was fun.

The LOST LALD documentary was a good watch.

Can you tell me where to find it? I've been through all the extras and
the main disc and couldn't see the option anywhere, which wouldn't be so
bad if you didn't have to watch the menu sequence each time you exit the
extras ;-)

Once I've found it on LTK, I'll check all the others, as presumably

Haven't got to Octopussy yet but even though it's a small and minor
technical detail, I am a touch annoyed that something that has been
dubbed "Ultimate" and cannot be viewed until you sit through the ad for
the technologically improved series of DVDs has such a basic problem
with it. It was almost the same with the box sets a few years ago with
such problems as Dalton's line right at the end of LTK.

Where's the quality control?

On the subject of being forced to sit through things on DVD, the novelty of
fancy menu transitions has, for me, long since worn off. Animated graphics
are generally acceptable on a first viewing of a disc but on subsequent
viewings they are nothing more than a time-wasting pain in the arse. When I
want to watch a movie, I want to be able to stick the disc in the player,
hit 'play' and go straight to the movie (reasonable copyright notices
notwithstanding).

The SE editions of the Bond flicks are the worst offenders for hampering the
fast access of the movie. Have lost count of the times I've gone off to get
the crisps and pop ready for the film, thinking that by the time I get back
all the animated menu guff will have settled down but when I do back to the
comfy chair it's only then that I realise that I forgot about that damn
'activate' menu screen whose only purpose is to force you to watch those
bloody animations.

I'd like to see a 'first play' menu that gives you the choice to bypass all
menu animations and go straight to the movie.

When I was reviewing the UE of OHMSS, I actually yelled at the player, "just
play the f*cking item, you prick".

And while I'm at it, someone needs to get it into the heads of the menu
designers that not everyone has already seen the film or programme when they
purchase the DVD so stop showing critical scenes from the film or programme
in the animated menu transitions. And as for those wankers responsible for
the "Deadwood" and "The Sopranos" dvd's, I want to learn the story from the
episode itself, not from a conspicuous episode synopsis screen that tells me
what happens before I get the chance to actually watch the ep. If I remember
to, I divert my eyes from the screen but all too often I forget and the
point on the screen upon which my eyes are focussed nearly always seems to
be coincident with two or three critical words of the synopsis e.g.
"...everybody is killed in the season climax".

Getting back on topic, the animated graphics of the UE DVD's have a novelty
value that outstays their welcome after only one viewing and appear with the
tedious inevitability of an unloved Moore film.

Okay, I don't feel any better by writing the above but at least I've been
occupied while my SE DVD of FRWL loads in the DVD player.

cheers.

>>> when they show the helicopter flying past the Taj Mahal, as the camera
>>> pulls
>>> back weird things happen to the clouds.
>>
>
> On the subject of being forced to sit through things on DVD, the novelty
> of fancy menu transitions has, for me, long since worn off. Animated
> graphics are generally acceptable on a first viewing of a disc but on
> subsequent viewings they are nothing more than a time-wasting pain in the
> arse. When I want to watch a movie, I want to be able to stick the disc in
> the player, hit 'play' and go straight to the movie (reasonable copyright
> notices notwithstanding).
>
> The SE editions of the Bond flicks are the worst offenders for hampering
> the fast access of the movie. Have lost count of the times I've gone off
> to get the crisps and pop ready for the film, thinking that by the time I
> get back all the animated menu guff will have settled down but when I do
> back to the comfy chair it's only then that I realise that I forgot about
> that damn 'activate' menu screen whose only purpose is to force you to
> watch those bloody animations.
>
> I'd like to see a 'first play' menu that gives you the choice to bypass
> all menu animations and go straight to the movie.
>
> When I was reviewing the UE of OHMSS, I actually yelled at the player,
> "just play the f*cking item, you prick".
>
> And while I'm at it, someone needs to get it into the heads of the menu
> designers that not everyone has already seen the film or programme when
> they purchase the DVD so stop showing critical scenes from the film or
> programme in the animated menu transitions. And as for those wankers
> responsible for the "Deadwood" and "The Sopranos" dvd's, I want to learn
> the story from the episode itself, not from a conspicuous episode synopsis
> screen that tells me what happens before I get the chance to actually
> watch the ep. If I remember to, I divert my eyes from the screen but all
> too often I forget and the point on the screen upon which my eyes are
> focussed nearly always seems to be coincident with two or three critical
> words of the synopsis e.g. "...everybody is killed in the season climax".
>
> Getting back on topic, the animated graphics of the UE DVD's have a
> novelty value that outstays their welcome after only one viewing and
> appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved Moore film.
>
> Okay, I don't feel any better by writing the above but at least I've been
> occupied while my SE DVD of FRWL loads in the DVD player.
>
> cheers.

Oh bugger! Forgot to 'activate' the disc first.....

jeers.

MOVIE PIRACY IS STEALING

STEALING IS AGAINST THE LAW

What I like best is the packaging at least tells you what's new and what's
been brought over from the last lot. Some things, such as being able to play
the gunbarrel in isolation, are completely bloody pointless IMO.

--- Psst. It's one thing to watch a DVD on a TV, which'll give you less
control over it, but if you're watching it on your computer, there's
normally a slide bar on your player that allows you to skip all the
junk and get straight to the film. Not only that, but seeing as how
you always re-edit these Bond films anyway - terrific job, by the way -
why not simply make a copy of the DVD with the nuisance bits left out?
Yeah, I know, that might not be the "proper" thing to do, but it's only
for your personal nuisance-free enjoyment so I'm sure it'll be alright.
Personally, I still prefer the more flexible prehistoric VHS format in
terms of fast-forward and stop-and-go control as well as picture
integrity, if not clarity; DVDs have yet to be perfected as far as I'm
concerned.

> cheers.

It seems the location cards are once again missing as they were with
the original US R1 SE DVDs of OCTOPUSSY and THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. The
original burned-in location card appears in THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH and
the horrible machine-generated one on GOLDENEYE.

Pillocks.

It's not very well thought out, that advert.
