#1: Preview of CR - "Craig uneasy as Bond"

Monkey's preview of "Casino Royale"
As for Bond. I've been fortunate to have seen some footage and the
stuff looks good. It ain't Bond in the sense we all know and er..
love? It's different . The one thing I will say though, or rather do,
is eat some of my words. I've said before that it wasn't going to
be much chop and that Daniel Craig isn't much of a Bond.... I'm
wrong. Well, kinda. The few scenes I was treated to were superb -
there's an awesome car chase that tops "Ronin" - and it looks
slick, but Craig still looks a little uneasy in the role. Maybe he just
needs a couple of sequels to ease into it, but he just looks a little
out of his depth. But, his presence, and the slight change of tone
(seems to be rooted more in reality) gives it a really different feel.
Generally, I think it's going to be a good movie.... But won't hit
one out of the park like, say, "Goldeneye" did.

------------------------------------------------------------ -------

I was right all along. Craig is miscast. He hasn't got the arrogance of
Bond, nor the sexual confidence. This film will not be a big hit. 100
percent Craig will be replaced after CR.

Dunno about that. Haven't they already shot the pre-credit sequence
(with Craig) for the next film?

Seems unlikely because Sony doesn't know how much CR will take at the
box office. If it underperforms it will need retail DVD sales and CR's
DVD release date is May (I think). That would make an April Bond 22
shooting date impossible. Besides, no other Bond film started filming
while the previous one was still in production. It would seem
unprecedented.

Indeed. But they've never had the chance (and never will again) to have
the "007 in 007" marketing campaign.

I'm beginning to think that the plan all along was to have a Bond in 2007
and that there will *be* a Bond in 2007 and Daniel Craig will be in it.
If Bond 22 is designed to follow on exactly from where CASINO ROYALE
finishes, it only makes sense to shoot the pre-credit now - if that indeed
is the case. The film would have been budgeted accordingly and it
would be cheaper to shoot it now than re-build next year.

Under normal conditions I would be cheering from the rooftops having
a Bond film two years in a row for the first time since 1973-74.
MOORE so that next year is 2007, BUT with this guy, YAWN!

I'm no expert in film box office but I think it goes something like
this...

Films need to take two and half time their production and marketing
budget to break even. Any more revenue after that brings in profit.
Cinema chains tend to take about half of the total revenue earned and
the studio takes a big bulk of the first week's gross. This is what
I've read.

If Casino Royale fails to break even (that is, is unable to make back
its production and marketing cost on worldwide theatrical release) -
which is very common with big budget films - then it has to rely on DVD
sales. DVD sales can account for around 60% of extra revenue (although
I have read that piracy - such as internet downloads and East European
manufactured copies - has taken a significiant chunk out of that).

In theory, Casino Royale could make, say, $100 million from DVD sales
and be profitable. But Sony won't know that until the film is released
on DVD and that won't be until May of next year. In theory, Casino
Royale could underperform on DVD and not make a profit for Sony and
Eon. That would make starting Bond 22 in April of 2007 financially
untenable. It would prove Craig was not a big enough attraction to
justify his starring in a second Bond film. But this is all 'what if'.
Realistically, it makes sense to wait until all DVD sales can be
accounted for before making Bond 22. But I'm not an accountant nor do I
work for Sony or Eon, so they have to do what they think is for the
best.:)

I will be there for the first showing. This Bond is going to by

> I will be there for the first showing. This Bond is going to by
> wonderful.

I went to see Roger since first off I was a fan of his, and second
he had something that it looked like he make a good if not great 007.
True some of the humor was over the top, BUT for that matter so was DAF.
DC is UGLY, too OLD looking, too WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!

Exactly, Sean. Moo Moo and WQ are basically idiots. If you read the
script he's not SUPPOSED to be at ease. He's never even seen himself in
a tux before! That's the POINT of the whole friggin' movie!!! Don't
worry about it.

You mean you don't really think etc?!

Me or the Bond fans overall who are they going after?
If they lose the fans, they lose a big part of the audience.
Face facts the public expects 007 to have a certain look you know
HANDSOME. To put it in your own words Joe Smo or whoever never read
Fleming or Gardner or Benson, they only know actors like Sean, Roger,
Pierce etc in the role of James Bond 007 period. Case in point
many folks I know never read a 007 novel and yet love the films and
expect Bond to look a certain way.

Bond films sell whether the hardcore fans go see them or not. It's not
those of us on this forum who dictate what type of film we get to see
(although I admit it would be nice to have that power). It'll be the
late teens and the 20-somethings who'll see the trailer during
Superman Returns and such that'll think, "Oh, the guy from Layer Cake.

--- Yeah, that's a great big audience right there for Craig as Bond.
Layer Cake took in only $11 million worldwide in its release. That
adds up to how many people? At an average ticket price of $5 [and I'm
being purposely low with that], that amounts to only 22,000 theater
goers who have seen the movie, with, let's say, two-thirds of that
being teens and 20somethings. So, about 14,000 teens and 20somethings
watching the CR trailer during Superman Returns, if those same 14,000
end up seeing Superman Returns at all, will think "Oh, the guy from
Layer Cake. Could be cool." Yep, that's boffo box office for CR right
there, alright.

Saw SR and no Bond trailer. Big disappointment.

Then the film was a disappointment as well. Shoulda stayed home and rented
"The Bird with the Crystal Plumage."

Both superb. I haven't seen the former for a long while, but often
thought a key element of 'Profondo Rosso' - what did the protagonist
*really* see? - was much misinterpreted by some critics as a tribute to
or rip-off of 'Blow Up', when Argento had dealt with the idea superbly
in 'L'Uccello Dalle Piume Di Cristallo', a film which to me seemed to
have nothing in common with 'Blow Up' at all. I suspect David
Hemmings' presence in 'Profondo Rosso' was the only real reason people
drew this comparison.

'Profondo Rosso' contains one of those painful art / life ironies which
crop up in films from time to time, in the scene where Hemmings takes
Gabriele Lavia to task for his excessive drinking.

It's a pity Argento's TI PIACE HITCHCOCK? is being seen largely as
another disappointment. Fingers crossed for the final instalment in
the "Three Mothers" trilogy.

I have this feeling that Argento has become a bit like John Carpenter
or George Romero - despite their immense early talent and influence
they didn't quite break through, and their later films have become of
serious interest only to aficionados who sift through a lot of
unsatisfactory material in order to find the few moments which remind
them of the glory days.

Apropos of nothing, my favourite Frankenheimer quote, after his
experiences on the 'Dr Moreau' project: "If I were filming 'The Val
Kilmer Story' I wouldn't cast Val Kilmer."

Still, at least a lot of people still remember those guys' early
promise and potential, and that they made a few good movies way back
when. Some people have even their best work unfairly ignored or almost
forgotten in the light of what they did subsequently, whether
professionally or personally (fill in your own list of examples

Also SUSPIRIA, one of the creepiest movies ever made, in spite of the

It's the first of the "Three Mothers" trilogy of which Argento is preparing

Yeah, I knew that, but didn't know he was filming the third. Here's
hoping he'll pull one more quality film that harkens back to the glory
days out of his hat. Is INFERNO any good? I've never seen it, but heard
mixed to negative word on it.

I'd definitely recommend you see it and make up your own mind. I
like it, but it's not as good as the Argento's we've been discussing or
TENEBRE, a film I suggest you get right this second if you've never
seen it before.

Have a look at the Poliziotteschi genre too. Some great DVD releases
at the moment.

Who cares? All the movie fans I know are looking forward to Craig as

box office will count.

Yet another fantastic reply from Vince.

It seems to me that the pro/anti Craig camp is split around 85%/15%
(judging by the opinions on this forum). Nothing you have said so far
would have me believe that it's any different elsewhere.

>>as Bond. So what? Only actually seeing the movie and how it performs
>>at the box office will count.
>>
>All I know with all the guys that could have played the role we're
>stuck with DC.
>
I'm sure if you keep complaining long and hard enough, they'll scrap
everything they've already filmed and re-shoot it all with a new actor
that meets your approval ;-)

Hey, did someone just describe "Land of the Dead?"

I'm embarrassed to admit that's the only film during which I've fallen
asleep while watching it in a cinema. What makes it worse is that I'd
draggged along a reluctant friend after sort-of-persuading him that
'Day of the Dead' was, in fact, seriously underrated.

> I can see the reviews now:
>
> "Are they kidding", "Who the moron(s) who casted this guy". "How can
> they do this to the fans", "Has Wilson taken leave of his senses"

oh! you've seen it then?
