#1: Can anyone use the force in the EU

Posted on 2006-07-19 10:55:19 by charlie12345

Just from reading some of the post on here it seems that anyone can use
the force. mara jade I found out became a jedi master, when I didn't
think she was a force user to begin with.
Also do you think the grandeur of star wars is lost when characters
like dooku and the emperor aren't replaced with similiar entities in
the EU.
And with his vast wealth why doesn't GL get a real author to write
these books instead of the hacks that are doing it at present.
Timothy Zahn was the only real author IMHO.

Mara Jade was always able to use the force. She was the Emperor's Hand
in The Thrawn Trilogy (by Timothy Zahn).

I think GL was maybe trying to explain the concept of being able to
"use" the force in TPM with the (much maligned) explanation of
Midichorians. I think the concept is that all living beings in the SW
universe have midichlorians in them but only those with a high enough
level of them in their cells have the ability to use the force, as it
is the midicholrians that "speak" to them telling them the will fo the
force.

That explanation has nothing to do with the midichlorians (or some
people moaning on about them being added to Episode I). You can use it
exactly the same without mentioning midichlorians.

The original Trilogy specifically says that the Force is in every
living thing, surrounding and binding them together. That alone means
that every living thing "has the Force", but only some have the ability
to use / control it. Not everyone who can use the Force is a Jedi or a
Sith either. Some would never be identified and some would only have
partial abilities giving them "good luck" / "skills" in things like
games of chance or pod racing.

The force is generated by all living things.

The degree to which one can commune with the force depends partially on
their potential and partly on their training and discipline.

Midichlorians are a measure of Force Potential.

An untrained person with a high midichlorian count is not necessarily
more adept at using the force than a trained person with a low
midichlorian count.

Every living thing would probably have "some" midichlorians, but some
have more than others, thus easing their ability to use to force.

Jedi/Sith are groups of force users who adhere to a certain
belief/code/discipline. They also have a tendency to seek out, or
breed to produce (particularly Sith) people with higher midichlorian
counts as these would be easier to train, and would therefore become
much more powerful allies.

There are plenty of force users who are not Jedi or Sith - many of whom
are completely unaware of their use of it - they just think that
they're "lucky" or "good pilots".

The midichlorian thing didn't hurt the trilogy, because it's just a
measure that was used by Jedi in the old republic to screen out
potential candidates.

Is there an echo in here? ;-)

Zahn may be a good writer, but he didn't stay true to the Star Wars universe
as depicted in the feature films, IMO.
