#1: Interesting note in HP PS/SS movie

Posted on 2006-07-16 16:58:01 by Stubby Boardman

Hi All,

Just a thought...

Given that:

1 Rowling, though not directly involved in the movies, was consulted
on what plot points MUST be included to tell the entire story.

2 The movies, though not strictly canon, do contain those plot points
that are necessary for the whole story.

In the sorting of Harry, Hermoine, Ron, and Draco, the only...and I mean
the ONLY...student shown in the sorting that wasn't a main character
was Susan Bones.

I wonder significance, if any, does this play.

Yours,

Stubby

In fact, wasn't she the only non-British actress to have played a British

Granted, the reason she got the role was that she was Columbus's daughter,
but it wasn't necessary that she be Susan Bones. Any girl who wasn't a main
character would have done just as well. Could it indicate that Susan Bones
might have something else to do later or do you think that's reaching?

And has she been seen in *any* of the subsequent movies *not* directed
by Columbus despite being in almost every scene where there were more
females than Hermione visible??

Nope :)

None. Crazy Mr. Director Head just gave his Daughter a bit more
screen time. Because he could.

Not everything in the movie is a major plot point. Especially those
that contradict the book.

No. Some of Chris' other kids had bit roles too.

I guess this is final proof Susuan Bones is a throwaway character. She
didn't have to be Brittish.

I didn't realize. Per IMDB, Isabella, Violet, and Brendan Columbus were all
in Chamber of Secrets. But they played parts like "girl with flowers" and
"boy in study hall 1."

So let me rephrase my question: Was Eleanor Columbus, aka Susan Bones, the
only non-British actress to have played a named British role in a Harry
Potter Film? You know that question is eventually going to end up in some
edition of Trivial Pursuit :-)

Apart from the fact that the girl playing Susan Bones was Chris Columbus's
daughter, which some contend that she was used in order to give her screen
time, I think one reason why they had her there was to show us how the
sorting was going to work. Not everyone who saw the movie had read the
book. Let us see how it works by using it on someone inconsequential, then
on to the important characters.

Nope. The order of the sorting in the movie was Grainger, Malfoy,
Bones, Weasley,
and then Potter.

>>> >In fact, wasn't she the only non-British actress to have played a
>>> >British
>>> >role in a Harry Potter film?
>>> >
>>>
>>> No. Some of Chris' other kids had bit roles too.
>>
>> I didn't realize. Per IMDB, Isabella, Violet, and Brendan Columbus were
>> all
>> in Chamber of Secrets. But they played parts like "girl with flowers"
>> and
>> "boy in study hall 1."
>>
>> So let me rephrase my question: Was Eleanor Columbus, aka Susan Bones,
>> the
>> only non-British actress to have played a named British role in a Harry
>> Potter Film? You know that question is eventually going to end up in
>> some
>> edition of Trivial Pursuit :-)
>>
>>
> Brendan Gleeson played "Mad-Eye" Moody and he's Irish. I would call that
> non-British. You may not, but there are probably a few Irish folks out
> there that might have something to say about that.

>>> Hi All,
>>>
>>> Just a thought...
>>>
>>> Given that:
>>>
>>> 1 Rowling, though not directly involved in the movies, was consulted
>>> on what plot points MUST be included to tell the entire story.
>>>
>>> 2 The movies, though not strictly canon, do contain those plot points
>>> that are necessary for the whole story.
>>>
>>>
>>> In the sorting of Harry, Hermoine, Ron, and Draco, the only...and I mean
>>> the ONLY...student shown in the sorting that wasn't a main character
>>> was Susan Bones.
>>>
>>> I wonder significance, if any, does this play.
>>>
>>> Yours,
>>>
>>> Stubby
>>>
>> Apart from the fact that the girl playing Susan Bones was Chris
>> Columbus's daughter, which some contend that she was used in order to
>> give her screen time, I think one reason why they had her there was to
>> show us how the sorting was going to work. Not everyone who saw the
>> movie had read the book. Let us see how it works by using it on
>> someone inconsequential, then on to the important characters.
>
>Nope. The order of the sorting in the movie was Grainger, Malfoy,
>Bones, Weasley,
>and then Potter.

It may take some very difficult-to-obtain ingredients, or have to be
made during a total eclipse visible in London, or something.

There was some kind of glass eye in Borgin's shop. Since Mad-Eye
already had his, I assume there was at least one other, or maybe
it had different qualities.

>>>
>>>>I'll take your word for it. I'm certainly not going to lift his robes

>>>
>>>We could just borrow his eye??
>>>
>>>That eye is a bit of a worry.... there are all sorts of unsavory

>>>why there is only *one* of them... you'd think something that
>>>massively useful would be produced in thousands??
>>
>>Would it work without PJ Potion?
>
>Well it works for the 'real' Mad-Eye without it so I cant see why
>not... tho I suppose losing a real eye to get one might not be such
>and attractive option! :)

Well, that's the thing. An eye might block it's powers, since it's
meant for an empty eye socket.

>
>

Poeple have 2 eyes. Logically, 2 would be made.

But you'd only need one, and they're probably expensive.

In the Muggle world, prostheses and implants that perform important
functions (as opposed to, say, breast implants) need to be custom made,
sometimes even hand-made, for the intended recipient. The wizarding
world does even *less* mass production than the muggle world, so I
would expect that something like Moody's prosthetic eye would have to
be made for him by a witch or wizard who specializes in such things.

>There was some kind of glass eye in Borgin's shop. Since Mad-Eye

Again, in the muggle world you can find used glass eyes in antique
shops. Some people make them into jewelry.
