#1: Springsteen Jammin in Joe's Garage?

Posted on 2006-07-01 23:11:39 by tunk

I've just heard Springsteen's "Badlands" on the radio and I kept
thinking of Joe's Garage. Seeing as Badlands was released in 1978 did
Frank take inspiration by this ditty by the over-rated "Boss"?

"It was all we knew, 'n easy too
So we wouldn't get it wrong
Even if you played it on a saxophone"

Take it away Clarence.

Both songs have the same primary chord progression (E-A-B). Not
exactly an uncommon progression, though, and I don't know of FZ
mentioning Bruce's song.

Did FZ ever even mention Springsteen himself?

Thanks, I appreciate that the i-iv-v progression is very common but I
had the radio on in the background and I started humming Joe's Garage
when Badlands was on. When the saxophone break started it just seemed so
similar and maybe a piss-take.

I also remember reading somewhere Zappa said that the... "SU&PYG Box set
will make Springsteens' box set look like......"

Happy 4th!

Something about why he took the guitar off during most of the show, so
he could sing, rather than wearing it to look good, like Bruce
Springsteen.

So it's pretty clear he had great respect for the boss!

I think you're thinking of an interview from 1987 when Zappa said that
the upcoming YCDTOSA set was going to make Springsteen's 5-LP/3-CD live
set pale in comparison.

I only know of one other FZ quote re Springsteen which is the one Gary
mentioned.

See this 1983 interview, in which he talked about "the Bruce
Springsteen syndrome":
