#1: DVD heads up

Posted on 2006-07-04 08:32:59 by Elvis Gump FASTMAIL PROTECT

I noticed my local Wal-Mart seems to be dumping all the 2-disk special
edition Star Trek sets from TMP to Nemesis for $9.32 here in MS. Their web
site shows them all to be down to $10.88 so it maybe a variable by state or
the difference between in-store or web pricing.

Anyhow thought anyone with a gap or two in their collection might want to
know. Unless you are all waiting for HD/Blue Ray...

Hmm. The only Trek I haven't seen: Nemesis.

If they drop it another $20 I'll think about it.

:-D

Seriously, thanks for the heads up.

Just checked:

That's saying something, being as I consider Generations one of the
worst films ever made, in the 'crimes against humanity' category. It's
only saving grace is watching Shatner outact Stewart, effortlessly.

Normally I agree with you, Kweeg, in most things, but ST V: The search
for God (sic) gives Nemesis a good run for "worst". Of course, it was
written by Shatner, Produced by Shatner, Directed by Shatner ...

Nemesis gave us an evil Picard clone whose Nosferatu like henchman mind a
rapes Troi, an even more wussed out Picard who now freezes at inappropriate
times, yet *another* Soong android this time Data's retarded brother, a
totally pointless dune buggy chase (so much for the prime directive) lots of
shoot outs, oh and the wedding at the beginning. (woopty-do) Generally a
very poor rehash of ST II. The only memorable line is Worf's comment about
Irving Berlin as Data starts singing.

ST V did suffer from a weak script (though no as weak as Nemesis) and did
have a few hoaky bits in it but it did give us some great Kirk-Spock-McCoy
lines and interaction. The characters acted like they should and how we've
come to expect they would. Kirks "I need my pain," comes to mind also the
whole camping thing cracked me up, it's exactly how one might picture the
three acting. Bottom line I've watched ST V a quite a few times (own the
DVD) and will watch it again whereas Nemesis was painful to watch a second
time when it was on the "free" no ads movie channel, and I'm in no hurry to
ever see it again.

I liked Nemesis better than ST5, primarily cos it wasn't my fav

I wouldn't argue if you'd just said "the worst". But "by far" is
exagerating things quite a bit. "Final Frontier", "Generations", and
"Insurrection" are very strong rivals in awfulness to "Nemesis" in my
opinion. And "The Motionless Picture" is a good (bad) runner up. At
least you don't start to nod off during "Nemesis".

My vote for worst, if forced to name one, would be "The Final
Frontier." No redeeming qualities whatsoever. "Nemesis" at least saw
Riker finally marry Deanna and head off to his own command.

Huh? PD was pretty much out the window whenever B-9 (or whatever he
was called) was peppered across the planet by the Romulans. I think
the locals knew something was up by that point...

>lots of shoot outs, oh and the wedding at the beginning. (woopty-do)

A lot of us were waiting for that. Certainly better than the library
scene in "Insurrection". No worse than the forced silliness between
the Big Three in "Final Frontier" (Spock's never heard of
marshmellows? Come on...)

>Generally a very poor rehash of ST II.

Agreed.

>ST V did suffer from a weak script (though no as weak as Nemesis)

I think it was weaker. False God? Crew mutinies because some Vulcan
tells them to? You accept this but complain about the "mind rape" of
Troi in "Nemesis"?

>and did
>have a few hoaky bits

Spock as Superman, for one. More groans here than anything "Nemesis"
coughed up. The Enterprise not working right, and Harve Bennett's
gratuitous cameo... ugh (and people complain about Janeway appearing
in Nemesis...)

>in it but it did give us some great Kirk-Spock-McCoy
>lines and interaction.

I've seen the movie several times... still looking for the great K-S-M
moments. I've sure never seen them.

>The characters acted like they should and how we've
>come to expect they would.

And completely out of character. Argh.

>Kirks "I need my pain," comes to mind also the

"Excuse me, what does God need with a Starship?" is my favorite line.
The camping scene did nothing for me.

If they were drunk. Of wait, they were supposed to be drunk. Watching
people get drunk is rarely fun to me. Your mileage may vary.

>Bottom line I've watched ST V a quite a few times (own the
>DVD) and will watch it again whereas Nemesis was painful to watch a second
>time when it was on the "free" no ads movie channel, and I'm in no hurry to
>ever see it again.

I've seen ST5:TFF many more times, since it's many years older. But
I'd rather suffer through Nemesis again than watch ST5:TFF, which is
the only Trek film I don't own on DVD (I will whenever Paramount cuts
the price of the double-disc set.)

The dune buggy chase was the most exciting part of the movie. After Picard
meets his clone, the movie becomes incredibly dull.

>
> ST V did suffer from a weak script (though no as weak as Nemesis) and did
> have a few hoaky bits in it but it did give us some great Kirk-Spock-McCoy
> lines and interaction.

Definitely a weak script. And as for interaction, how about Kirk's loyal
crew stealing the ship from him because stranger makes them feel good.

I'm not sure which was worse, but I'm more disappointed in STV because I had
higher expectations for it.

I loved Star Trek V. The special effects were weak in some
scenes, but now ordinary fans are working to solve those problems by
inserting in their own FX.

>> Normally I agree with you, Kweeg, in most things, but ST V: The search

You make a lot of good points, once again. Still, imho, neither movie
was particularly good. I'm finishing off the 2nd season of TOS right
now in my own 40th anniversary celebration, and after that, I'll be
rewatching all the movies, from "the motionless picture" thru
"nemesis". Perhaps then I'll have a different opinion. I think I can
say that movies 2 thru 4 were the best of the lot. Some of the others
had good parts in them, but, it seems, when you put an egocentric
actor in charge of the affair (Shatner in 5 and Stewart/Spiner in 10)
that its a disaster ... though Nimoy had significant input on 3 & 4.

When I first saw Star Trek V, I told everyone, that was my TENTH
favorite Star Trek MOVIE !

Now, I guess I would say its my 20th favorite Trek Movie ;^)

At first, I liked Nemesis, but after thinking about, I discovered the
reason I liked it so much, is that it reminded me of Wrath of Khan(Best
Trek Film Ever!) with bits of Search for Spock, mixed in.
The only thing missing was, while Riker was kicking Ron Perlman's
character of the cliff on the Gensis planet, err, in the chasm on the
Enterprise E, was to have him say:

"I've(kick)...Had(kick)...Enought(kick)...of(kick)...Youuuu! " ;^)

>>
>
> Like I said earlier in this tread, Brian:

The mere fact that it was an attempt to rehash ST II made it

ST V.

Quite so. They could have cleaned up Nemesis a bit and it would
have been a respectable Star Trek film. STV was pretty much doomed simply
based on concept. It was a bad implementation of a bad idea, whereas
Nemesis was a bad implementation of a much better idea.

>>> In fact ST V can be considered a rehash a "The Way to Eden", and we know
>>how
>>> good *that* was.
>>
>>Yeah brother!
>
> Aw, geez... now I'm gonna have that awful episode on my mind for the
> next couple of days... :-(

Herbert! Herbert! Herbert! Herbert! Herbert! Herbert!
