I um... don't know what the rules are here or if I'm allowed to make a
greeting topic... but... hi.

I also don't know how many... serious... dragons are here... but...

*sighs* I guess I came here searching. The idea of even considering
myself something I'm not terrifies me to no end, especially with my
conservative Christian background, and my whole mind screams at me that
what I'm doing right now is insane and I'm just digging myself into a
hole by doing this... *pauses* *breathes*

But not too long ago I was crying because I could feel my wings unfurl,
the flight muscles of my body moving to do so, but it was a shadow of a
feeling and I ached for their existance despite how impossible it was.
I didn't even get to the flying part--I just wanted the wings, wanted
to move them, couldn't...

I can feel my tail lashing when I think about it... I crave meat, and
always root for the predator in nature shows. During the cold, when I
leave in a thin coat and watch the snow fall, the sight of my breath
coming out in silver wisps like dragon smoke excites me... Every bird
egg I find I take home, my motherly instincts rising for them more than
even a newborn puppy.

.... A girl that met me once named me dragoness, and it spread quickly.
I write about dragons, read about dragons, draw them and dream of them.
My heart stopped once when I realized that if dragons truly do exist,
which I believe, then I'll find them in heaven...

Such beautiful... wonderful creatures...

*pauses, clears throat* I don't know... I just don't. But I found a
website that described this community once, several years ago, and
never joined, and it's haunted me all this time. And here I am come
back as a member... shy, uncertain, frightened, but a member
nonetheless.

Please keep posts PG-13.

That's about it, really. :)

If you're not, an awful lot of us have broken the rules already. A warm
welcome to the Wang Toodle of Dragons -- I hope you enjoy your stay!

Ask questions, think about the answers and what you feel yourself.
There's nothing wrong with a bit of introspection, provided one can do
something positive with the results.

I hope you find what you're looking for here.

On 12 Jun 2006, draganie was found to have scratched this message on a
rock in alt.fan.dragons:

> I um... don't know what the rules are here or if I'm allowed to make a
> greeting topic... but... hi.

Rule # 1: Be yourself.

Rule # 2: Don't try to stay on topic, you'll go insane.

Rule # 3: Try to keep your posts in the G to PG-13 range.

Rule # 4: Please quote what you're replying to, otherwise nobody knows
what you're talking about.

Rule # 5: Please don't top post, for the same reasons as Rule # 4.

> I also don't know how many... serious... dragons are here... but...

If you want a quick glance, look at our DragonCodes. (That's the bit at
the bottom of messages that starts with "DC2.") Look for an R with some
characters after it, either plus signs, minus signs, exclamation points.
For example, mine is R+++!. This means that I am as much a dragon as
one can get. Less plus signs indicate either a lesser conviction, or
more fun. But everyone, no matter who or what or how strong or how
un-dragon-like is welcome here, you don't even need a DragonCode.

> *sighs* I guess I came here searching. The idea of even considering
> myself something I'm not terrifies me to no end, especially with my
> conservative Christian background, and my whole mind screams at me
> that what I'm doing right now is insane and I'm just digging myself
> into a hole by doing this... *pauses* *breathes*

The only way to uncover what is buried is to dig. Even sonar and radar
can only give you an idea of where to dig, you have to actually dig to
be sure.

And we have Christian dragons here. I don't happen to be one, but if
you're having issues with Christianity (or any other religion) and
dragons (or any other otherkin), just ask, and someone will try to help.

> But not too long ago I was crying because I could feel my wings
> unfurl, the flight muscles of my body moving to do so, but it was a
> shadow of a feeling and I ached for their existance despite how
> impossible it was. I didn't even get to the flying part--I just wanted
> the wings, wanted to move them, couldn't...

Everyone feels that from time to time. Some more so than others. I
tend not to feel my wings, per se, but I do feel my wing muscles
cramping from stretching them.

> I can feel my tail lashing when I think about it... I crave meat, and
> always root for the predator in nature shows. During the cold, when I
> leave in a thin coat and watch the snow fall, the sight of my breath
> coming out in silver wisps like dragon smoke excites me... Every bird
> egg I find I take home, my motherly instincts rising for them more
> than even a newborn puppy.

Not being female, I can't help with the mothering bit. But I have an
affiliation with reptiles myself, despite not being one. I find them
incredibly cute, and yes, I consider them cuter than puppies, too.

> ... A girl that met me once named me dragoness, and it spread quickly.
> I write about dragons, read about dragons, draw them and dream of
> them. My heart stopped once when I realized that if dragons truly do
> exist, which I believe, then I'll find them in heaven...

No, you won't find them in heaven. At least, not yet. But look around,
they're all around you, even if you can't always see them. You can,
however, feel them all the time.

> Such beautiful... wonderful creatures...

I can't really expand on this, since it's simple and true!!

> *pauses, clears throat* I don't know... I just don't. But I found a
> website that described this community once, several years ago, and
> never joined, and it's haunted me all this time. And here I am come
> back as a member... shy, uncertain, frightened, but a member
> nonetheless.

Nothing here to be frightened of. We don't bite, unless we're asked to.
I, myself, and shy and somewhat reserved in real life. I suffered from
depression, and still do, and it took everything I had, every ounce of
courage and strength I could muster, to tell a mental health
professional who I really was. But eventually, it gets easier,
especially here. Nobody here will ever deride you (except, of course,
trolls, but they deride everyone), or yell at you, or call you a coward,
or tell you to get your head out of the clouds, or anything like that.
This is a community of support, love, and understanding. This is the
only place I know of where people are accepted for who they are, and not
shunned for who they're not.

Shy or not, you made a big step in posting here. Know that you're never
alone any more. We're always here, in spirit even if not typing at the
moment. If you ever need anything, just ask, and we'll do our best to
supply it.

For example, I'm asking that I stop babbling and burying the newbie
under way too much information, so this is the end of my post. };=8Ã

I have had similar but less defined feelings about the wings, but even

Haha, you played velocoraptor too? I used to do that, running around
in the back yard all hunched over with my arms tucked up against my
chest, screeching and growling and chasing my little brother. ^_^ But I
can't even remember when I first started longing to fly. I'm always
uncomfortable when I think about my tail and horns and especially my
wings, because I know they should be there, but they're not! So
frustrating... Sometimes I grow my fingernails out really long so that
I have claws, but they break too easily.
Anyway, hi, and sorry for not being in the first group to reply, but

>Thank you all again for your replies.

We're a fairly welcoming bunch, by and large. :)

>I hope I'm not 'top posting' right now o_o;; I don't know how to do
>it, so I don't know how to avoid it ><;;

Top posting is writing your comment at the beginning of a post, with all
previous material in a big chunk underneath. You're not doing that, so
you're fine. :)

Outlook Express is the main reason top-posting became common, since
since it puts the cursor at the top of a post rather than underneath
quoted material, but by the looks of it you're posting from Google
Groups, which does seem to structure things properly.

> conservative Christian background, and my whole mind screams at me
> that what I'm doing right now is insane and I'm just digging myself
> into a hole by doing this...

Nonsense... Modern Christianity is mostly based on thousand year old
Pagan and Roman symbols with essential rituals "re-written" so it
wouldn't seam so alien at the time. So, I seen no reason how or why
Draconian beliefs have to clash with your current religion.

So you ARE a Christian Dragon, I can live with that.

> But not too long ago I was crying because I could feel my wings
> unfurl, the flight muscles of my body moving to do so, but it was

> wanted the wings, wanted to move them, couldn't...

Better to have wings that don't fly then and wanting to fly but
realizing the impossibility... Ah, but living as a wingless lizard
isn't as bad as it seams. One tends to live on far less AND have a
little more strength then the norm. But, maybe that is just me.

> Such beautiful... wonderful creatures...

Yes, but not all dragons are Dragons...

> *pauses, clears throat* I don't know... I just don't. But I found

> So many greetings! O_O *blinks with surprise* Thank you all for your
> kind words ^-^ I guess I'll try to reply to what I can...

That's just the way we are!!

> ~*~Lord Flame Stryke~*~
>>Rule # 5: Please don't top post, for the same reasons as Rule # 4.
> How do I keep from doing so?

Just like you did. Find the relevant part of the post, and post your
reply under it. And nice job on the snipping of the irrelevant
materials. This keeps the message from getting too big and bulky.

>>tell a mental health professional who I really was
> o_o omg, I can't even mention to anyone that I joined this board,
> much less what I'm considering myself to be!!! What happened?

I was going through a severe bout of depression, and feeling decidedly
suicidal. I had just told my parents almost everything, and they acted
as if I was making everything up. I'm sure now that it's just their way
of trying to deal with something they're not prepared to deal with, but
at the time I was severely wounded, mentally and emotionally.

Long story short, I was prescribed a medication that I was told would
help me sleep as a side effect, and that it did. But what they didn't
tell me, what I found out afterwards, is that they thought I had
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder over dragons, and the medication they gave
me was intended to counteract OCD. Little did they know that it would
work as well as it did. I'm now obsessing less over my human host than
I was, and am able to concentrate more on who I truly am, the dragon
inside.

>>Shy or not, you made a big step in posting here. Know that you're
>>never
> alone any more.
> Wow... that means a lot, an awful lot. The idea of others actually
> understanding... Thank you. And I hope I can return such a favor
> someday.

One day, when another newbie comes in, shy, uncomfortable talking,
perhaps having religious qualms, you'll hopefully feel good enough about
yourself and your position Here to help them along. And if that never
happens, either because someone new doesn't come along, or because you
don't feel you can help, no worries. Sometimes just being there can
help.

>>For example, I'm asking that I stop babbling and burying the newbie
>>under
> way too much information, so this is the end of my post. };=8Ã
> Hehe, it's okay, I like long replies. ^-^ And dude, these dragon
> smilies rock. (That's what they are, right?)

Yes, that's what they are. The tongue-sticking-out one is actually
extended ASCII, alt-0222 on a Windows system, in case you want to steal
it. It works well with other emoticons, too, so long as your
application or font supports extended ASCII.

> ~*~Draco18s~*~
>>You'll come to accept it eventually.
> o.o If I really am a dragon, I hope so. The idea of being anything but
> human still seems bizarre, but I ran over it all night and at least
> there's nothing spoken against it in the Bible (that I know of)

Even if there is, does it matter? You aren't the bible. You try to
follow it to the best of your abilities, sure, but it doesn't dictate
your life. One of the few things I know about Christianity is that
their god gave his people free will, and I find it hard to believe that
an entity would give its worshippers something only to deny them that in
their next breath.....

> Thank you all again for your replies. I hope I'm not 'top posting'
> right now o_o;; I don't know how to do it, so I don't know how to
> avoid it ><;;

Top posting is posting a reply at the top of a message. True, you
started your message at the top, before any quoted text, but that was
well done, as an introduction, and a general reply to everything before
specific replies to specific portions of quoted text, which you
correctly posted under (or bottom posted).

See Draco18s's witty (or at least, he thinks so };=8Ã) response to my
response to your original message to see an example of top posting and
the answer to why it's difficult to follow along.

mysteroius message from draganie. Message follows:

>> Shy or not, you made a big step in posting here. Know that you're never
> alone any more.

> Wow... that means a lot, an awful lot. The idea of others actually
> understanding... Thank you. And I hope I can return such a favor
> someday.

You already have. You understand us too.

> o.o If I really am a dragon, I hope so. The idea of being anything but
> human still seems bizarre, but I ran over it all night and at least
> there's nothing spoken against it in the Bible (that I know of)

God, or the gods, made you as you are. Never forget that. If you are a
dragon, then you were meant to be a dragon, and nothing said by the
Bible or any other holy book can change that.

Oh, indeed, I'd be happier if I lived longer in my TrueForm than just a

in my TrueForm than I would knowing I'd live forever in some host or
another.

Some are more serious than others... beware of flying foodstuffs.

Never be embarrassed of your background, without it you wouldn't be the
being you are now.

The closest I've yet come to matching the feeling of having my wings is
to go out on my bike... though I did manage to wrench my back a bit on
Tuesday when one of my wings got caught in the door at the convenience
store up the street, but at least I got it so folks don't tread on my
tail anymore.

>
>
>
>

There's nothing to fear here, what you give out you get back threefold.

I've made a few friends here, even as standoffish as I am.

Bear in mind that anything anyone could say to you is just words on a
screen, they only have whatever strength you give them and when you try
to decide just how much strength to give them... always consider the source.

Welcome to "The Edge of the Map".

Cynical, sarcastic, offensive, yet still satisfying, with half the
calories of your regular webcomic.

Besides, any comic with a tapdancing ass, a drama llama, and an undead
