Hi all

Since the official Danish premiere is this Friday, a movie poster has
now reached Denmark.

It's a rather boring thing with Marvin on a piece of rock floating in
space with Ford leaning on him.

There is also a very small logo (that hitching hand in a blue sphere
that some people took for a smiley at first)

The text says (above):

"Without the guide you haven't got a chance on Earth"
(that's my best attempt at a translation. Not having a chance on Earth
is a Danish saying close to "not having a cvhance in hell" in English)

In large alightly friendly letter below that:
"The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy"
(the movie title isn't translated, but kept in English)

And below:
"Don't panic!"
(again kept in English)

And:
"Movie premiere 12th of August"

I have a picture (apologies for the quality, it's taken with my PDA's
camera):

I have seen these posters throughout the past couple of weeks here in
Copenhagen.
Tomorrow there will be an ugly, ugly, ugly postcard circulating the cafés
all over Denmark, which will advertise the books. I think most of the
characters are on it, standing on a rock in space.
Again they are keeping the english title, but they have translated the
individual books underneath. And that stupid leading line is there too.
It's actually a pretty atrociously designed promo campaign.

to see it, and they had translated the title to "Haikerens guide til
galaxen". It just sounds *wrong* to me, but then again; I'm not a
Norwegian.

BTW: I apologise if I bring up something, which has been discussed here
bfore, but I've been away for a while, and haven't had a chance of
cathing up.

I will have to go to a cafe tomorrow then :-) Even if it's a horrible
campaiaign I suppose I will have to see the postcards, won't I?

Well, yes, it sounds a bit like paraphrasing the English title in
Norwegian, but it's a lot better effort than the way they translated the
book title in Danish.

translated as children books.

Apparently the 'new' book title is 'Blafferens Galakse-Guide'
And not 'Håndbog For Vakse Galakse-Blaffere' as it was called when I first
read them.

That last (old) title translates into 'Handbook For The Alert
Galaxy-Hitchhikers' - but it kinda rhymes all funny-like in danish.

Vakse. Galakse. Looks like a rhyme to me.

(I'm assuming that Vakse is 'alert' - similar to English 'awake' - and
that Jacob was trying to say that the only reason the translators added
the word Vakse to the title is because they thought it it makes nice a
rhyme with Galakse)

LOL! It would be great if it was, but IIRC the Danes have a weird soft
D that sounds a bit like someone mumbling an L. It only sounds like a
real D if it's preceded by a vowel. So Håndbog is probably pornounced
"Horn(mumbled 'L')bog" or something like that.

You mean the book has been republished? It's been out of print for
_years_... Not that I feel like ever reading it in Danish again unless
it's been retranslated... I did notice the new title in the movie
texting, though.

And the specific Danish word for "alert" is even a slangy-childreny-one,
and not something really used in everyday talk, which detracts something
from the title.

A much better title was used in the Danish radio production, although
that was a rather poor production... There it's called "Turen går til
Mælkevejen", roughly translated as "The trip goes to the Milky Way", and
"The trip goes to ..." is a famous Danish tour guide series.

At least I'm sort of back for a while. News.aioe.org isn't being too stable
lately, so most of the replies to me, I can only see in Google. Maybe

Apart from that, it can be no surprise to anyone that I'm moving again.
This time to Ireland (Cork, more precisely) - well, that part might be a
bit surprising ;0)

My boyfriend has already gone to start his new job there, and I'm now alone
in our flat, taking care of the last things before I go there too. Until
then, I do have time to pop by as I've already quit my old job and am PT
doing nothing but packing, getting rid of things and looking into geting
othing things shipped.

I really wish I had a less heavy hobby than reading books, or that my books
were e-books, but they're not and they're damn heavy. I have to give most
of them to a second-hand shop, really.

If you want to feel that you really have a lot of things, just try to ship
it.

Enough of that. I want tea.
Actually - just woke up, and I've already put on the coffee, so that's what
I'll have, but that's besides the point! ;0)

Ooh, that's actually a pretty decent translation! I like the translation
of "Don't Panic" (although it has been translated to something slightly
different, close to "Don't worry", it works pretty well, I think,
especially compared to the old translation). The title itself might have
been better, but it's an improvement to the original horrible translations.

how the "It's unpleasantly like being drunk"-joke is translated.

but that one really is a bitch to translate!! I am a translator, but I
have no idea, how I would translate that into German...

I haven't read the German translation, but some of the passages I have
come across, were IMHO really awful - and doing a retranslation of the
series into German is a kind of a dream of mine. Anybody feel like
sponsoring me so I can do that??

I am now a little wiser than before reading afda today, since I now know
what a 'chav' is, with the help from wikipedia and wiktionary.

Apparently it isn't much of a subculture in Denmark, or ar least I
haven't thought of it much. Then again, I don't notice anything much
related to style or clothes unless it actually reaches the point where
someone shows up naked or suchlike.

I've noticed them and can't stand them. I just didn't know that they're
called "chavs". They also tend to have a facial expression of trying to
look cool, but ending up looking dumb in a slightly arrogant kind of way. I
guess it's a question of which area you live in or look at. I used to live
in an area which was crawling with them. Some of them like to wear obscene
amounts of cheap perfumed products, especially the guys.
