I thought they already did that? You always knew the person they didn't
introduce was going to get killed in the original startrek away teams.

Not always.
Sometimes they did introduce people and kill them off anyway.
Like that lovely young woman that was crumbled to death in 'By Any Other
Name'.

Yes. And then there was nurse rand.
She had on a red dress but she never got killed on the away teams. So I
think you have to add, you had to be a nameless or mostly nameless guy
with a red shirt on to get killed...

good point. nurse rand was in another pop culture thing? Not sure.
Yeoman Rand.
Still why didn't they ever kill her? She did get to prematurely age
that time and who was she in real life and how did she get that role in
star trek?

The actress that played Yeoman Rand had a drug problem and they had to
let her go something she freely admits. As to why they didn't killer
the same reason they never killed any of the other bridge crew they
gave the series a sense of reality.

Prematurely age?
Nope. Wasn't her.
By the time of 'The Deadly Years' she was no longer with the show.

A number of bridge officers was killed in 'Where no man has one before'.
Helmsman Lee Kelso was strangled telekinetically with a cable by navigator
Gary Mitchell.
Gary was killed by Kirk, who dropped a very big rock on top of him..

Because Kirk took very special care of her. In return she took very

Scotty always wore red, but he only got killed once, didn't he?
Maybe that was enough to justify the red shirt.

What's she do to help - get drugs or teach lines?

uhura hardly ever went on away missions because she was manning the
communication console. I never saw Yeoman rand their with that
christmas ornament thing in her ear so uhura does not apply. Plus uhura
was a named character.

no, only security and communication and engineering/transporter people
wore red. Yellow was command and blue was science officers.
These things are very basic ot star trek. I'm beginning to wonder if
you people really watched any of these shows? Anyway scotty was an
introduced character. They rarely killed introduced characters.
Sure they killed spock later but he was reborn in the movies. And yes
they killed the evil kirk by recombining him with the good kirk. And
yes they killed mccoy on that planet where everyone was robots
(Finnigan!!). But not permanently killed. So your line of arguing is
just to argue looks like.

And they had different colour uniforms in the movies did they? Actually not
reading posts before replying doesn't do much to move the conversation
along.

Actually not

conversation

Yes. Okay I'll break it down for you if you dont have time to read the
whole thread. In the old star trek there were three color of uniforms.
Red was security/communications/engineering/transporter. People like
Uhura, Commander Scott. Yellow was command and navigation. People like
Capt. Kirk and Sulu. Blue was the science officers like Mr. Spock and
Doctor McCoy.
Are you with me so far?
Usually the people killed on away team s were peopl e not named or
introduced. They wore red shirts and were killed because they were
security and they were acting to protect the away party.
Yeoman Rand was not security. She was communicatons. That is why she
always had clipboards for Captain Kirk to sign. Uhura was
communications. She rarely was on away teams, but she ws planetside for
the arena show where they were commanded around by the alien Apollo.
Now you asked about the movies. Star trek movies. Spock died in one of
them and they expused his body in a photon torpedo but his body was
revived in the white robe. White robes don't count as they are not ship
uniforms.
Now if you want to argue apples and oranges and say kirk was wearing a
vermillion and white uniform then you'd be right. However in the
original he was wearing a gold shirt.
OIf you want to continue arguing though. Please don't let me stop you.
It seems that's all this group likes to do? But if you want to talk
star trek worlds, then I'm in.

Unless she was manning the conn, or with Kirk as part of what they
called a landing party, she was at her station. You could say the same
about Spock.

Eh... So Janice Rand isn't a name?
As for the earplug...
Maybe here:
http://www.planetspace.de/startrek/library/images/character/ rand2.jpg
She was communications / operations officers on the USS Excelsior under the
command of her old buddy Sulu.

VI.
Like this in ST VI:

: uhura hardly ever went on away missions because she was manning the
: communication console. I never saw Yeoman rand their with that
: christmas ornament thing in her ear so uhura does not apply. Plus uhura
: was a named character.
Uhura on landing parties:
The Squire of Gothos: Trelane transports her and the rest of the bridge
crew to Gothos.
This Side of Paridise: Okay, probaly doesn't really count because
EVERYONE eventually joined the landing party in that one.
The City on the Edge of Forever: Assigned to landing party to look for
McCoy.
Mirror, Mirror: She's part of the entourage dealing with the Halkan
counsil and get caught with the others in the parellel universe.
I, Mudd: Part of the landing party to Mudd's planet.
The Trouble With Tribbles: Okay, this probably doesn't count either,
since it's actually a shore leave.
The Gamesters of Triskelion: Part of the landing party to Gamma II that
gets shanghaid to Triskelion.
Plato's Stepchildren: Forced down to the planet by Parman where she has a
date with television destiny!
Unless I'm mistaken, these are the only times she ever leaves the ship
that we saw. In most of them she was either on leave or she was forced
down by some alien or android force.
By the way, a little nitpick. Why are other posters using the term "away
mission?" That's "Next Generation" terminology.

yes exactly. That is what happened. She was not one normally to go down
and explore unless under extenuating circumstances. Triskelion was the
one I think I was thinking of? The one with the different colored ear
things and things around the neck? The Apollo one is where the dwarf

you know what I mean by named character. A regular on the bridge/show.
Chief O'Brien is a named character. Wesley is a named character, but
the salt creature that posed as a beautiful woman and had suction pads
on her hand was not a named character.

Torment????? You're exaggerating enormously here imo.
Just a correction.
If I post something that is incorrect, I totally *expect* people to point me

No, Apollo was in 'Who Mourns For Adonis?' The Enterprise is stopped by a
forcefield in the shape of a gigantic green hand.
The one in which Kirk and Uhura kissed (forcibly) is 'Plato's Stepchildren'.
The dwarf was Alexander. Due to his physical condition he didn't develop
those telekinetic powers.
Triskelion was in the episode 'The Gamemasters of Triskelion'. She was part
of the landing party that was kidnapped to that planet. The things around
the necks were torture devices to control the thralls.

Yeoman Rand was a member of the landing party in Miri. Were there any

hey that's weird. I made a post but it disappeared?
anyway. Good job with looking up the episodes. They are memories for me
