My copy of 'Clash on Broadway' arrived this morning - just in time for
a really boring, shitty few days. Had the whole set on mp3 for ages,
but I'm looking forward to hearing it through my stereo...

What exactly is your problem with listening to mp3's through your stereo?

My computer is two rooms away from my stereo and I have never been
arsed to get a long enough cable to connect them.

I also like the experience of reading the liner notes and lyrics
booklet and looking at the album art while I listen. It's nice to have
the proper record in your hands instead of a CD-R too...

Maybe because mp3 is a lossy format that'll never sound as good as a raw
format. The bottom end never seems to have as much punch.

Aww. I paid myself the luxury of an Airport Express thingy. With it, I
can connect iTunes to my stereo from wherever I am in my flat. Even the

Yea, but it's not actually that bad. Of course, it's not audiophile, but
neiter are CD's. When I'm really up to enjoying music, I put on a record :)

How the fuck stupid are you?
You only have to look at an mp3-created .wav file versus an actual .wav
file to know you're talkin' crazy.

Sorry, but I think it is that bad. It's yet another move towards quantity
over quality - so what if I lose 10% of the intended 'sounds' when I can
have much more on the disc.

I think mp3's are just handy, like cassettes used to be, and those were
lossy as hell, unless you bought the really expensive, studio quality
tape ones. When I'm at work, I'm happy not to have to carry a bunch of
CD's but to have my music on my computer. When I'm at rest, I like music

I use iTunes to rip my CDs (mainly because it's free) but as a player,
it's severely lacking. The way that it fades one song into another at
the end (is there a way to stop it doing that? I can't find it) pisses

Ooo, that's nasty. Try Winamp (http://www.winamp.com/) - it's free, been
around ages and it's got a nice cataloguing system.
If you're ever looking for a video player you can't go wrong with VLC

Yeah, I use Winamp to listen to all my mp3s - there really is no other
choice as far as I am concerned. iTunes is only good for ripping (it's
faster than the free version of Winamp) and cataloging my music.

Certain cymbol crashes sound off too if the bit rate is set too low in
MP3 format. I've noticed it when songs are encoded at 128 kbps but it's
difficult to tell outside of select songs. 128 kbps is supposed to be
'CD quality' but doesn't quite cut it. The problem might be alleviated
or not even noticeable at greater bit rate like 192 kbps -haven't tried
it out yet.

I've hooked up my PC to the home stereo with a $5 cable from Radio
Shack. It's not as good as listening to a record but having a household
MP3 jukebox is rad, rad, rad.

I usually encode mine at 160kbps - sounds okay on my crappy PC
speakers (though that's not really saying much).

You should get cancer.
I would be so happy, if you had cancer.
It would bring me cheer.

Even though the bit rate is the same the mp3 codec still strips stuff from
the file

It's even worse if you're trying to edit and re-save an existing mp3.

I was putting an Avril bootleg together for a friend last week,
chopping the single mp3 into tracks - the re-encoding made an already
poor-quality audience recording sound like anus.

Man, 128 kbps is far from CD quality.
I'm no big audiophile, actually, but until it starts getting 256+, I can
tell it's an mp3 when played on good, loud speakers. Crappy headphones
through my soundcard, usually doesn't matter. I used to have a PC/stereo
setup, and it was just bloody painful to listen to.
Variable bitrate oggs over 200 are the best, if you're looking for
slightly smaller size but good quality. Even streaming ogg is astounding.
