Reading Louis Epstein's posts, you'd think LotR is dropping
like a stone down the all-time charts. But he's only talking
about the domestic U.S. market. Here's the worldwide Top Ten:
1 Titanic
2 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
3 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
4 The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
5 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
6 Shrek 2
7 Jurassic Park
8 Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
9 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
10 Finding Nemo
Louis, it's rude to focus only on the U.S. on such an
international newsgroup. Please use this list from
now on.

More accurate would be to use inflation adjusted list:
1 Gone with the Wind
2 Star Wars
3 The Sound of Music
....
6 Titanic
19 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
41 American Graffiti
47 The Bells of St. Mary's
48 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
56 Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
57 The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
etc.
Not that 48th place wasn't a good accomplishment in a
contest... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!

But ROTK's _still_ well ahead of Revenge of the Sith - and likely to stay
there. And will probably beat "The Bells of St. Mary's" one of these days.
All I can say is that a gift-wrapped LOTR DVD set had better be waiting for
me on the morning of the 25th (sweetie forgot to get it for Christmas).

I have one bone to pick about your list. LotR was written as one story,
not three separate ones. It should be enjoyed as it was written.

The movie version was released as three different movies. Perhaps you
would have enjoyed it more as one ten-hour movie, but the producers
decided the three movie approach might be more popular with the
general public. There's nothing FotW can do about it.
BTW the book was originally released as three separate books.

Clearly, they had not experienced the delights of salmiakki.

All these lists are stupid. It's not enough to
adjust for inflation. You also need to adjust
for population, availability of alternative media,
etc. One thing they should do is combine DVD and
box office sales.
The only reason I quoted that list was to show
that Louis was picking the list that suited his
personal taste. You have done the same thing,
choosing the list with Star Wars at #2. May I
remind you again that you will never see that
movie again, only an adulterated mutant version,
unless you do what I did and buy an Asian bootleg
version of the true original. If you were a
genuine Star Wars fan you would do this. By no
means should you humor George Lucas' cinematic
atrocities by buying his corrupted version of
the original classic.

DVD sales are something of a separate issue, but it
would be nice if there was some definite list of DVD
sales numbers.

You don't need to worry about that. Louis has promised
that as soon as any film passes LotR ones in the worldwide
list, he will post in even bigger letters :-)

Maybe. But as it happens, that list is also the most
accurate one available.

My VCR copies work well enough for now. I expect
Lucas to come to his senses eventually and release
the original versions in DVD as well.

No it isn't. People often skip movies in the theatres
knowing that they will soon appear in DVD. That's
becoming more commonplace as people get huge TV sets.
That skews the box office lists in favor of special-
effect-laden movies that you need to see on the big
screen to experience fully, like Star Wars and LotR.

My goodness, is he going to post in HTML? And when
is he going to get over the two-Twin-Towers thing?
We know now that it ain't gonna happen.
> My VCR copies work well enough for now.
Oh that's SO Second Millennium. At least rip them
and burn them to DVD before they degrade.

For him it's a matter of cash vs. kudos. He really does
see his movies as works in progress. He feels it's
unfair to hold him forever to what the movies happened
to look like in 1977. Maybe you're right though, and
if so, I'll be first in line for the new DVD's.

NO-ONE comes to the StarWars Universe except through the original
Laserdisc release! (With the cardboard rebels at the end).
