I was talking to a physicist about a type of particle I had read about
in _Scientific American_. Apparently this object has no mass or charge,
but it has spin.
"In other words," I said, "There's nothing there, but it's spinning."
He laughed, probably because my thinking was so hopelessly Newtonian.
Lately, however, this conversation reminded me somehow of the Nazgul.
Perhaps they have no mass, which could explain their "nothingness",
although they can manipulate objects, cast spells and emit phonon
streams modulated as hisses or blood-curdling shrieks. They can also
crackle, wither and "go out" when caught in singularities such as
the fiery ruin of hill and sky.
