It's a web address, but that's not important right now. The address takes
you the site for a book called The Science of the Hitchhiker's Guide.

Haha...LOL... makes me wanna watch the old Airplane movies! Man those
things had me rolling on the floor when I saw them for the first time! They
still
make me laugh, but now I can pretty much quote the lines as I watch it.

John

"Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue." - McCrosky,
"Airplane"

"Surely there must be something you can do." - Striker
"I'm doing everything I can... and stop calling me Shirley." - Rumack,

We had our fair share of cascades of Airplane quotes a few years back. I
noticed it instantly too. For a while every other post included "surely"
while the rest of the posts contained "Stop calling me Shirley". Well,
close to that anyway :-)

Yeah, I remember the Airplane! films. Marvellous entertainment.

About 15 years ago, a friend of mine was working event security at various
venues in the L.A. Basin and while standing guard one night along came
Kareem Abdul-Jabaar. When Abdul-Jabaar was passing, my friend Roger feigned
recognition, pretended to be very excited and said, "Hey! I know you!
You're Roger Murdock, the airplane pilot!" Abdul-Jabaar burst out laughing.

I'm still old enough to remember Airplane, even old enough to remember
The Airport-movies, on which Airplane was inspired.

Given that Airplane is so much more famous (at least, in every social
circle I know of) than the Airport movies, I think the joke is lost on
most people.

Besides, Airplane was released as 'Flying High' in Australia, and I
think it's a much better tightly - a joke in itself, rather than a
parody. (even though the movie is a parody...

So I bought it - had to - and read it. Here's my brief analysis.

As a book, it's good - I liked it. Basically, the author takes a few items
from the series (the Babel fish, parallel universes, time travel, God,
etc.), and goes into current scientific theories of the topics.

However, using the name "Hitchhiker's Guide" is a gimmick. It probably
limits the audience to only those that would "get" the references contained
within, however in general it probably created an audience for a book that
wouldn't have sold as well if it were named, "A Bunch of Scientific Analysis
about Various Complex Things". References to the books felt mostly like an
afterthought, or just a fan that had a subject, and happend to throw in
references to Hitchhikers where he would have in every day conversation
anyway.

Each chapter opened with a description of where the topic relates to the
series, but then the next 10 pages about each topic are scientific analysis
of the subject, and references to the Guide beyond that are limited to
comments thrown in for those that catch them (such as, paraphrasing, "it
would take someone with a brain the size of a universe to comprehend it
all").

For die-hards interested in the actual scientific analysis of it all (geeks
like me), it's a good read. For those expecting more analysis of the
details of the Guide, I don't recommend it.
