I believe he's referring to this:
but the pretty part is critical and
the "WAS" is critical! Why is this worded in the
passive if it's so important.
The "WAS" was simple past tense - "she was a young, pretty wife."
The sun and wind had changed her, too. They had taken the
sparkle from her eyes and left them a sober gray; they had
taken the red from her cheeks and lips, and they were gray also.
is all in the active voice. Passive would be:
She had been changed by the sun and the wind, too.
The sparkle had been taken from her eyes, and they
were left a sober gray. The red had been taken from
her cheeks and lips, and they were gray also.
