I love cats.... [message #88486] So, 24 Juli 2005 15:44

I've been having some interesting feline experiences recently, so I
thought I'd tell some stories about the many cats I've known and loved.

The first cats I ever knew, when I was very very young, were a pair of
black brothers named Wally and Mr. Spook. I remember Spook being very
fat and mean, while Wally was skinny and friendly, but my parents tell
me that, in the beginning, Wally was fat and Spook was skinny, and then
they switched. My mother loved Wally and called him her familiar
(she's Wiccan, you see). One day, the man across the street ran over a
black cat in his drive way and came to us very apologetic, thinking it
was Wally. My parents thought it was too, until they turned around and
saw both Spook and wally sitting like twin statues on our roof. Sadly,
when Wally was about... I dunno... seven years old, maybe, he was
killed by rat poison. The people who had given the black brothers to
us ordered a solid black marble tomestone that said, "Wally, Beloved
Familiar," and had a short poem my mother had written, and a pentagram.
Spook died of old age around eleven or twelve years old, but by that
time, we had other cats. I can't remember whether we adopted Whiskers
or Snowflake first, since we had them both for several years (and still
have Whiskers) but I'll go ahead and tell Snowflake's story first.
My childhood friend Sunny brought a giant treasure troll doll over when
she visited and I made a wish on it. I wished for a white cat. About
a month later, in winter, a flame-point Siamese appeared on our porch,
seeking food, so my parents allowed me to keep him. He wasn't
completely white, but close enough. The argument about his name was
rather amusing. Snowflake was the first name I chose, but my parents
kept on making other suggestions. Each time, I would say, "No.
Snowflake!" until they gave in. My mother later told me that the next
name she would have suggested was Lynx, which I actually would have
consented too, but it was too late then.
Snowflake may not have had exactly nine lives, but he had a few, at
least. He was hit by a car once, and it broke his pelvic bone, but
after weeks of resting in a little pen my dad built, he recovered from
that. Later, he caught some rare feline desease that appearantly kills
half the cats who catch it, but he lived. Unfortunately, he never
recovered fully, and the desease relapsed later. He dissapeared,
presumedly going off alone to die, but for years afterwords I dreamed
about finding him alive and well. Snowy was one of my favorite cats,
and my eyes are watery now just from writing about him.
Then there was Whiskers. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure we
adopted him a couple years after Snowy. It was the middle of summer,
and we had gone on a big church big camping trip (we go to a Unitarian
Universalist church), and when we finally came home, I first went to a
friends house out in the country. Her cat had just had kittens, and I
swear it was love at first sight when she let me hold the smallest one,
a fluffy orenge marmelade male named Mew-Mew. When my dad came to pick
me up, I asked him if i could adopt Mew-Mew, and after a short debate,
he agreed. He said to my mother, "an eight-year-old girl needs a
kitten!" and so, when Mew-Mew was nine weeks old, my friend delivered
him to me. I renamed him Whiskers, and he is ten years old now.
The next cat we adopted was a stray male kitten who we saw run across
the street and right up onto our porch one day, mostly white with a few
black and brown spots here and there. I named him Jules after the cat
in my favorite children's book, Cat Witch. My little brother
especially loved Jules, but the little cat died a few years later from
Feline Leukemia. My mom later found a card from the vet that had
fallen behind a shelf and been forgotten. It was a reminder to get
Jules's leukemia shot.
One night while taking a bath, I daydreamed about having a female black
and white cat which I would name Luna. Well, Samantha already had a
name, but she looked exactly how I imagined, except for a very
interesting white stripe along her back shaped like a lightning bolt.
I called her Samantha Lightningstrike. She also had a beautiful
daughter named Tina, with long, soft fur that was white with grey
patches. They had belonged to family friend who had died of
AIDS, and had asked us to take care of her cats. Tina was very shy,
and eventually ran away to live across the street because our other
cats bullied her. Samantha stuck around for a long time, and she may
still be living at my mother's house. I'm not sure.
Pixel's story was an adventure from the start. (I can't remember if we
adopted him beforew or after Tina and Sam, but, just like snowy and
Wisk, we had them during the same time period.) I was walking with my
brother and my two best friends, Mabry and Aurora, to the little
grocery store on the corner a block away from my house when a little
grey tabby kitten ran out into the street in front of an oncoming
truck. Aurora immediately ran after him and chased him out before the
truck got too close. After cornering the startled kitty, we carried
him all over the block, looking for his home. When no one claimed him,
we took him home. I was still just a child, of course, and quoted The
Lion King to my father. "Look at him... He's so cute and all alone!
Can we keep him?" And, obviously, we did. Mabry named him Pixel, and
he grew up to be a new familiar for my mother. He is still around. I
said hello to him last time I visited my mother's house.

Whew! This is getting long, and there's still Precious, Sakura, Lina,
Firefly, Tribble, Flame, Shadow, Spike, Lila, Middie, Biff, Vanyel, and
Lissa left to go! I think I'll call this an intermission. Does anyone
else have pet stories to tell?

It would seem that all of my Kitties have stories as well...
Duster is my baby, I can't say she is my favorite 'cause I love them
all. When she was a kitten, just about to be weaned, her mother
stopped taking care of her, and she quickly got real sick. The vet
thinks it was distemper, she lost balance and could not walk toward
the worst times, she scratched all the skin from the stop of her head
and was a rather pathetic mess. She needed help eating and voiding but
she always seemed to be in good spirits and was still fighting, so
after several intense weeks of large amounts of anti-biotics, she
started to slowly recover.

Grama Hope lives in the garage, she is a 14 year old petite female.
She loves to sit in your lap and be petted. She was found alongside
her dead mother on the roadside. She was given to a nursing mother we
had at and hoped she would live.

IT was a kitten rescued from a friends mothers house, a dog had killed
the his litter mates. Mom told me not to give it a name or I would
become attached and not find him a home. Thus his name became IT.

Meouth was named by my niece. Meouth is a talker and will meow out all
kinds of conversations to you. She was a drop-off that wandered up to
us at a family gathering at my fathers house. It was the fourth of
July, she is a beautiful gray black tabby and has a loving
personality. I could not believe someone could have just dropped her
off in the country like that. Grrr.

Mr. Speckles is actually my sisters cat, when she moved out she could
not get an apartment that allowed cats. He is a cuddlier and likes to
sleep with me, cuddled up next to me. Although he snores and like to
steal my pillow. He has become a permanent indoor cat as he contracted
a very bad infection in his mouth. He only has four teeth left and the
total vet bill was about $900.

Prince got his name because he was a finicky eater when he was a baby.
His bottle had to be at just the right temp. When my brother got
divorced and lost the house. I took in his animals. Two six month old
males; both brown tabbies with white feet that look like twins (Boots
and Nemo) and a female that had kittens the night before. I closed up
the garage and made a secluded spot for her there. She found a way out
of the garage and took one of her four kittens with her. She never
returned. So I had three three day old kittens that I became the
mother for. I still have Prince, he is a semi-long hair orange and
white. He has this amazing tail, it has to weigh more that he does big
bushy fox tail. The other two kittens were Abby and Angus. When they
were weaned and ready, they went to my sister whom now has an
apartment and her daughter fell in love with the kittens. After a
couple of weeks, Abby was accidentally stepped on in the middle of the
night. She had some swelling in her spine and neck; she lost the
ability to walk and was blind. After I would visit her at the vet, the
techs would say that she would improve in leaps and bounds. That did
not sunrise me, I was her mother after all. She came back to stay with
me for the rest of her recovery. Eventually she recovered almost
totally, regaining her sight and movement. She went back to my sister,
three weeks later she got Parvo. She died a few days later. My sister
was working for the local animal shelter at the time, she must have
been exposed at that time. A week later Angus came down with symptoms
and died that day. They were only a week away from when they would
have gotten their shots..sniff

There are other stories, of a few others whom are no longer with me...
And I also have a dog, Fancy Lu; she is a shepherd, chow, blue healer
mix. My sister rescued her from the kennels at the vet office she was
working in at the time. Her owner was abusive to her. And my mother
Cockateal lives in my house as well, her name is Francis...

Five cats, a large dog, a bird; all indoors
and three cats that live in the garage....
That's a lot of cat and dog food and toys and litter and stray fur and
love :)

Well I have lots of pets... and it seems we have just added a new kitten to
our stable... I say stable because now we are up to 6 cats!! Anyway, the
newest kitten we have tentatively named Tinker, short for Tinkerbell... she
is a black/grey tabby with white on her nose, chest, and 4 white socks...
she wandered up to the house and I've been feeding her outside for about 2
weeks now, but I've worried about her with the cars and traffic and such,
and she was hiding up under our cars... well... I did manage to get her
wormed outside.. will need to check in a couple weeks to make sure, but that
will be easy now... anyway... she would run away at the site of us, but she
gradually came around and I could actually pet her and play with her while
on the porch... well she of course wanted in with the other cats... and I
did mention that we would have to bring her in within 6 to 8 weeks anyway
(so we can get her spayed) so we wouldn't have any litters of kittens... so
the hubby said if she'll come in, she can stay in... well guess what... that
took all of about 2 minutes... laugh... so she's been inside now for a day
or so... she's doing really well... the other cats aren't playing with her,
but they aren't jumping her either... (when the new wears off, that'll
probably start... or maybe not.. I can hope) she's still shy around us, but
that will fade with a little more time...

Tiffany is 21 years old... she is a grey and black tabby, was long haired...
hair is growing back nicely now though... laugh... her last vet visit they
cleaned her teeth and shaved her for me, oh, and trimmed her claws that had
grown into her pads... ouch... and I'd just trimmed them not 3 months
before... really makes me angry I let that happen to her....so now she gets
her nails cut/checked once a month...she's now on a special diet and
vitamins with some pain medicine... her blood work showed early signs of
kidney failure so I don't really know how much more time she has with us...
which could be 4 or 5 years for all I know, or even longer.... I just really
hope she goes peacefully when it is her time...

Then we have a year old cat named Tanuki (Japanese for Raccoon), she's part
Maine Coon cat... very thick hair, tabby markings, black/brown she showed up
outside, and we took her in with every intention of finding her a home other
than ours, only to find that her lower lip was detached from her gum...
would cost a lot to fix... and she was running a fever... anyway... we found
an organization that would at least look at her lip and see if they could
repair it for free... come to find out she had a piece of a stick jammed
into her gum... so they removed it, couldn't sew her gum up, wouldn't hold,
but its healed up completely, they also spayed her and gave her shots at the
same time... so all I had to pay was the initial vet visit for lukemia test
and antibiotics which was $115.. so that wasn't too bad... laugh...

Then Kodama (Japanese for Tree Spirit) is about 3 years old, white with a
black patch on his left ear and black tail somewhat long haired... I got him
after I had lost my bird during an operation... he and his litter mate were
the only ones that survived after some sort of animal attack (3 others were
killed or had to be put down). He wasn't too thrilled about us bringing in
Tanuki, but they play together all the time now... I'm hoping he'll quit
being so stand offish with the new kitten, and mad at me, Tanuki is
interested in the kitten but they haven't played yet...

Then Pepper is 5/6 or so... mostly black with some brown spots, one brown
toe and one white whisker... She doesn't care for Kodama or Tanuki, but she
hasn't been aggressive with the new kitten... so there might be hope for her
yet... laugh... she sometimes wants attention, but isn't insistant about it
as Kodama or Tanuki are... but she really likes to jump our other cat for
some reason... shrug...

Then there is Laser who is maybe 7/8 or so... all black... and she is
anti-social, we caught her in a trap when she was young and brought her
home, had her spayed and she just has never warmed up to us humans...
occasionally she'll want to be petted and will get in front of your face/or
monitor... laugh until she's done being petted and then she'll start
growling... she growls at all the cats... and pretty much just does her own
thing...

Hopefully that will be it for the cats in the near future... laugh... my
hubby already says I'm over my limit by 3 now... Ages are approximates... I
know for sure about Tiff's... she was 6 months old before my daughter was
born in 85... lol.. and I'm pretty sure about Kodama's... but you know how
time passes so quickly...

I won't go into the birds, the dogs or the horses for that matter... or the
rest of the cats I've had over my lifetime... lets just say I loved them
all...

End of intermission! =p Here's the other half of my cat stories.
*wonders if anyone has ever had more cats than her*

My brother had some friend who lived two houses down the street, and
they had a brown tabby cat named Precious. For some reason they
decided they didn't want to keep her, and went around the neighborhood
with her, asking people if they would adopt her. We refused, already
having several pets, but the darn thing came back to our house on her
own and insisted on staying, so how could we refuse? She was very
dominant, and mortal enemies with Lina, a young cat who we picked up
later. According to my mother, precious dissapeared recently. She was
good looking, so hopefully she found another home.
The same friends who had Precious also gave my brother a pet lizard.
My parents asked if I wanted a new pet too, and I considered asking for
another kitten, but decided on something different instead. They
bought me a baby white rabbit who I named Amelia, the Ruby-Eyed
Princess. She got sick and died two weeks later, and I wished that I
had just got a new cat instead... Just a couple days later, those
friends of my brother's called me over to see this stray cat that had
just showed up. She was the most beaitiful feline I have seen in my
life, and I have no idea why she was a stray. She looked like
snowflake had, but with semi-long, whispy fur. Just like Snowy's her
eyes were blue with a firey red tint to them. I named her Sakura.
Like Tina, though, she was chased away by the other cats. I'm sure
someone else adopted her, though. She was too enchanting for anyone to
resist her.
Lina, a brightly colored tortous-shell kitten, was found curled up on
our neighbor's porch during a winter storm. She had at least two
broken ribs, but they healed quickly and she was healthy until her
death. She was so small that we didn't realize she was not a kitten
anymore until she got pregnant, and i got my first mid-wife experience.
There were five kittens, but three were still-born. The two live ones
were both female, an orange tabby we named Firefly, and a calico called
Tribble because she was "a ball of fur with claws and teeth". Tribble
was hit by a car just a week before her first birthday, but Firefly is
still around at mother's house, and i think she's finally forgiven me
for bringing home Lila, another kitten who I will get to in a moment.
Anyway, had a second litter of four, but two caught colds and died,
one--who I named Flame--got his back broken somehow, and the other, I'm
sad to say, crawled under my pillow while I was sleeping and
suffacated. Waking up and finding her was one of my worst experiences.
She had been my favorite of the litter. She was black with brown
points, like a dog. Lina died a while after Tribble. Mom found her
outside the bathroom, near the foot of the stairs, with blood on her
mouth. I don't think any of us made the connection before--we thought
she was sick or something--but now I'm betting she fell.
Tawny was yet another stray, named for his faded orange-tan coloring.
He was a 'boyfriend' of both Sakura and Lina, and probably Firefly's
father. I have a very cute photograph of Sakura lying on the inside
frame of a window looking at Tawny, who was in the exact same position
on the outside. Tawny was always shy, and only came inside during
winter. I think he's left now.
Mir, a black female, and Luna, her grey tabby sister, were the last
survivers of a litter of kittens belonging to my half-sister's mother.
The cat mother had lost her milk, and the kittens were starving, so
they were brought over in hopes that Lina would adopt them, as she had
only just given birth to tribble and Firefly at the time. As soon as
they started mewing, Lina ran downstairs and tried to carry them off,
possibly thinking that they were the other kittens who had been
stillborn. My mother still has both of them, though Luna is very
skittish. I named Luna, of course, and Mir is short for Miricle, which
was the name given to her before Lina adopted her.
Shadow was a big fat black tomcat who my best friend Aurora couldn't
keep anymore, so I took him. He didn't stay long, though. I don't
know if he ran away or was killed. =/ Spike was a stray with black fur
the same length and softness of Sakura's. He also ran away after less
than a year, though. I think it was Precious who chased away most of
our other cats, until she vanished herself.
And finally, there was Lila, one of the two adult cats I still have.
Aurora, my brother Devin, and I were walking to the comic store to
return a rented anime video. We passed an electrical transformer, and
heard a high-pitched animal call. I thought it was a bird, but Aurora
turned back and looked down the alley beside the transformer. There
was a Siamese cat with grey striped points, and at her feet, a young
kitten with the same markings. She was running away, the kitten mewing
at her to wait, but she wouldn't. Well, with a five-week-old kitten
sitting alone in an alley by a busy street, we didn't even need to stop
and discuss it. We caught her and carried her home, choosing to pay
the late fee for the video we were supposed to return. We named her
Lila because she looked a bit like a Lilac Siamese. She's still a bit
feral, and would rather attack your hand than let it pet her, but
doesn't break the skin... usually. She's my brother's favorite, and he
wants to build an army of cats with her as the leader to take over the
world with. ^_~ He calls it the Quigongallion Army because his nickname
for Lila is Quiggy. Exactly two months ago she gave birth to four
kittens, three grey tabbies and a fluffy calico. The tabbies were easy
to tell apart because each one was a different shade, light, dark, and
medium. We named the medium one Middie, the light one Biff, and the
dark one Dark, but changed that to Vanyel later. The calico was just
Calico at first, then Diana, then Grimlin, and now she is Lissa, and
will stay Lissa. Middie and Biff died from blood-loss before we
realized that it was the fleas that were killing them, but Vanyel and
Lissa are fine. My dad has always complained about our large number of
cats--we've had up to ten at a time--and wanted me to find homes for
the kittens, so I made a very nice Free Kittens sign and put it out in
the front yard, but when Dad got home, he had a change of heart and
took it down. He loves Lila too, and just couldn't bring himself to
get rid of her children.
So now I have Lila, Vanyel, Lissa, and old Whiskers, as well as a black
Labrador named Twilight Suzuka and a German Shepherd named Inu Yasha,
or Twilight and Yasha for short. Now if only I could afford to keep a
horse, I would be in pet heaven.
