<Plays the March of Death> [message #88481] So, 24 Juli 2005 03:24
Lord Flame Stryke
Well, my car's Check Engine light came on today. Checked the error
codes: 12 and 41. 12 means that the battery or the diagnostic computer
had been disconnected recently. Since it was obviously on, I thought it
was a problem with its backup power.

41 means that the alternator's field control circuit was open or
shorted, and I assumend that this was also due to backup power, ie a
wire came loose.

I then took it into a repair shop (which happened to close 10 minutes
before I walked in, oops) and he said he'd have to test the alternator
to find out for sure.

So I went to Canadian Tire. They test alternators, and I just happened
to have a small ratchet set, so I took it upon myself to take it out to
be tested.

Step one, find the alternator. In my other car, it was front and
centre. In this one, it's low and outside, and hiding under the air
conditioner compressor.

Step 2, remove the alternator. Unfortunately, I didn't have the right
size bits. So I had to go inside and spend $75 on a new ratchet set.
Just for one bit, after all. But not I managed to get it unbolted and
unhooked from the belt.

Step 3, pull the alternator from the car. The easy way? Tear out the
air conditioner compressor. Um, no. The hard way? Tear out the air
conditioner compressor. Still no. I managed to bend the leads going
into the compressor without breaking or kinking them just enough to pull
the alternator out.

Step 4, test the alternator. It seems my DC voltage is out to lunch.
The testing machine got as far as that before deciding my alternator was
toast. So I get a new one. The old one has a little thingy attached to
it, the new one didn't. But all the bolts and nuts were the right size.
Manager's speculation: it's just a relay of some sort, the new one
"must" have an internal one. Joy.

Step 5, install new alternator. Actually a lot easier, since the new
one's a little smaller. Wires go on with only one minor hitch, which I
worked out easily. Insert mounting bolt. Secur-- oh, wait, can't find
the nut. Oh well, I'll look for it later. Set the tensioner. It won't
bolt into place. Keep pulling and suddenly I feel a little movement,
and the tensioner bolts in nicely. Hook up the battery (oh, yeah, that
was part of step 1, disconnecting it). Start the engine. Remote
starter, marvelous tool for diagnostics like this. Alternator isn't
spinning. Shut down engine and unhook battery again. Fiddle around
(I'd use a different F-word, but there's hatchlings present) for about a
half hour, no luck. It just won't sit properly. Swear at the wind,
which is suddenly gale-force. Swear at the sun, making it just bright
enough that all you can see is glare. Swear at my hair, because it
keeps getting in my face. Finally undid the tensioner, reseated the
belt (after cramming 3/4 of my arm in a hole about 18 sizes too small
for it) and redid the tensioner. With much difficulty. Re-hook
battery, restart engine. Alternator's spinning, yay. Check battery
gauge, it's climbing, yay. Oh, yes, and I found the missing nut.

Finally, $250 and 2 hours later, back up and running..... Can't really
afford $250 right now, but definitely can't afford no car. But I didn't
get to the registry, so I need to do that on Monday before work, so I
can renew my license.....

Well, that ordeal is over with. Once again, Flame Stryke 1, world 0.

And now I just want to sleep, since I was up /way/ too early this
morning (vet for the cats)..... But I don't know how far I'll get,
since people are supposed to call later.....

Don't know what that is, but I'm assuming it's a really cramped
thingamabob.

The 6 foot long arm would have been handy, but I think I would have been
better off with at least 4 elbows, and if my arm was a 1/2 inch in
diameter..... Just getting to the belt to get it back on the main drive
I needed to be both on top and underneath, on both sides, with a really
good multi-tool, along with both feet and my tail, plus my mouth to run
the guide along..... Let me tell you, seeing a 120' tall dragon crammed
inside a car like that wasn't pretty..... I'm just glad I didn't get
/really/ annoyed, or I'd need to buy a new car to put my alternator
in.....

From Wikipedia:
"A Rube Goldberg machine or device is any exceedingly complex apparatus
that performs a very simple task in a very indirect and convoluted
way...The term also applies as a classification for generally
over-complicated apparatus or software."

I made one of these a couple years ago for a class. It had to be a
coin-operated device that demonstrated at least 3 different laws of
physics and then launched a small ball. Reliable machines earned extra
credit.

Im so glad my car has no ECU ;-)

Its a Daihatsu Charade CX 1.0 3 cylinder turbo diesel, manual 5 speed.

I've been doing a lot on it lately. to date...

Replaced both front suspension coils - one broken in two places, the other in 1
Patched about 4 holes in each of the rear suspension pillars
Replaced the right rear wheelarch outer body panel (cut the old one off and welded the new one in).

I still need to:

Replace timing belt.
Replace the rear brake flexi-hoses (not dead but dying)
Get the injection system sored out (17 year old diesel never been maintained in its life)
Replace the rear *left* wheelarch outer body panel
Paint it black. With go faster stripes.
Fit the computer im building into it (http://www.mnementh.co.uk/carpc/)

At least this 100 foot dragon can get his claws into the engine compartment... its not so cramped on this model, although the timing belt promises to be a complete tw*t thanks to an engine mount getting in the way...

Got a passing grade. My machine worked about 7/10 of the time, not too
bad but not good enough to get the extra credit.

I wish I still had some pictures of it, but I had to delete them once
when my Windows 98 computer decided to fail (for the nth time). Now I
keep that computer only for LAN parties and experimenting with different
operating systems, neither of which I do very often.

Ah, modern conveniences: cars that resemble Rube Goldberg devices and
computers that fail for no apparent reason.

Heh. mine does have space to add one... although I think I'd rather fit power steering if I have a choice of extras...
