Deep Drought
On Monday, the Pentagon filed documents asking Congress to increase the
maximum age for military recruits to 42, in all branches of the service.

Don't the Japanese consider 42 an age synonymous with death ?

I think Chinese look at "4" as having the numerology of death.
I've never heard anything about the Japanese...

They're these guys that draw cartoons and still like rock n roll. Pretty
good at making cars and bikes and musical instruments. They eat raw fish
and slaughter whales -surely you've heard of them ?

I thought you were talking about Californians until you got to the
"slaughter whales" part. (shudder) Yeah, I've heard of them, now
that you mention it.

Not a lot of difference these days, I'm told. Japanese and Californians both
like to slaughter the English language too :)

My name got butchered WAY MORE when I was living in Illinois
than Californians ever could. But yeah, a lot of cultural stuff
comes out of both Japan and California. But they speak Japlish
and we speak Murican. English is spoken on the other side of the
other puddle. :-)

That's what comes of relying on hearsay.

Difference being the Japanese have the excuse that English is *not* supposed
to be their first language.

I heard something somewhere along the lines that the population of
California has more "Spanish as a first language" people than "English
as a first language".

Or was it just that there are more spanish speakers than english
speakers?

Tian? Can you help with these stats?

Do you imply that getting too old for military is just like death?

It's an interesting question. For sure, California
has a lot of both English and Spanish speakers.
There was certainly a time when Spanish speakers
were the majority in California. Now I think they
are a minority, but that is partly because their
educated children speak English. Ethnically speaking,
there is no majority ethnic group in California.
Everybody is a part of a minority. Some are smaller
than others though...
