If you were assigned to write the series finale, keeping the basic
premise of Riker and Troi viewing the last voyage of the Enterprise
NX-01 via a holodeck record, and Trip getting killed, what would you
do?
I would set the episode's present time at the end of ST: Nemesis,
just before Riker takes command of the Titan. He is considering whether
or not to have his own command, and reviews the events surrounding the
the last voyage of the Enterprise NX-01 to help him decide to move on.
Trip would die a more meaningful death.
Sato and Mayweather will be featured as lieutenants. Dialogue will
reveal they volunteered to participate in the final voyage to Earth
Archer's speech will be shown.

Kill myself before the fans get to me and show me exactly what they
think of probably the worst episode and a bad series. :-(

I would have tried to make a BETTER SERIES in the first place. Which would
have placed the last ep in season 7, like the others shows, instead of
season 4.

I wouldn't accept the job of using Riker and Troi and killing Trip. A
writer should have some integrity and not whore themselves out to hacks
like Berman and Braga. I would write what I think appropriate.

Trip did die a meaningful death. He saved the ship from hostile
intruders. However, his death was stupidly executed. Poor premise,
poor writing, piss-poor editing.

I'd have Will and Deanna dealing with the death of the unlucky transporter
double Tom Riker, and running the Enterprise historical program to see how
an earlier generation dealt with a similar loss.
