Setting up a server [message #83393] Mi, 20 Juli 2005 07:38
Draco18s
I guess I'll make this post to the general populous (get more imput that
way), that and I think that there are several out there who have done what
I'm looking to do. *Looks at Maxx*

I'm trying to turn my desktop machine into a server. Why? Because I think
it'd be fun. My problem is, I don't know anything about setting up a
server.
I know I need "software" (an OS with certain services), but I've had trouble
getting Linux installed properly on the machine (I even did Gentoo, and I
find it strange, but it ran out of room unpacking the tar.bz2 files).
At first I wanted a machine where I could log on locally to use it as a
desktop, but now I don't much care (my laptop serving me well in everything
I've asked it to run (save one game, but I'll live without it), and being
nearly identical in stats, only a slower processor (equal to what the
desktop used to be though)).

What I want to know is:
What OS should I use?
Any things I need to do that don't involve the machine (I.E. registering a
DNS)?
Anything else?

And I want as free as I can get. I don't want to shell out $100+ to run a
pet project with no projected income.

only can think of three things that can become a webserver:
Unix (linux might do (try store bought, might work better), unix is
text based)
Apache (thinking its just a program, not sure what os though)
Windows server 2003 web edition (can scratch that one out, not cheap)

dont know the pros or cons of them, so might do some research.

Mess around with computers. And servers.

I had planned on the net in general, seeing as the ethernet I have available
(called ResNet) goes there. Firewalls on the ethernet are local end only
(although I think that the ResNet network has some other stuff between me
and the www seeing as I have to register the wall jack first).

No problem. 1 day isn't going to slow me down much (I've been resurrecting
this PC since May of 2004).

NetBSD huh...I'll go looking for it.

You'll probably want Linux or another Unix-based OS. Most versions of
Linux come with Apache. If what you have doesn't, you can get Apache
from http://httpd.apache.org. Apache is pretty OS-independent. I even
have an Apache test server on my Windows box.

If you have several computers able to connect to the internet, you need
a router and set it up with port forwarding. With this, several
computers could be made servers, and you will not have to buy another
real WAN IP from your ISP.

As for setting up your server on the Internet, you can use no-ip or
dyndns free services. However, if you are on a so-called 'shared ip'
like I'm on, you will at least have to buy an IP address.

That's the idea.

I've got the stuff for Apache in case I need it.

My IP is my IP, no matter how many times I "get a new IP" I end up with the
same one. Drexel has a whole slew of them for the wifi network and for the
ResNet. There's rarely a conflict (and then it's only been with my wifi).
So, no problems there.

Nice, there *are* free dns places.
*Remembers having seen dyndns before.*

You could go to www.dyndns.org and get a free DNS, both for static and
dynamic IPs.

Actually, it's the NIC you're registering. Most DSL companies I've
noticed require you to register your NIC, meaning that if you get
another computer you need to call them up to remove your old one, or pay
for an additional one.

Also, you might want to look into routers or like-minded software. I
had a friend who had an Amiga running as a router. It worked wonders.
All these new and exciting viruses got onto the Amiga, looked around,
paniced because they didn't see anything they knew how to run on, and
died.

The best way to learn is to own, IMO. If something goes horribly wrong, I
ask someone more knowledgeable. Same as with windows.

Now if you want a Linux that is very Windows like, get Lindows. And then
start working backwards in versions....

No problem.

Perhaps *before* something goes horribly wrong.

I've heard good things about Lindows, but I've never tried it. I'm
currently using KDE on Fedora Core 4. It's not awesome, but I didn't
have the money to buy a commercial distro. I wonder how much Lindows,
which is now called Linspire, costs. I think I might want it for my
laptop computer.

Last I knew, it was free. But as I've heard that Linspire is getting so
close to Windows as to actually be bad, I'm not looking into it myself.
