Does anybody know if Del Rey has put together a set containing the rest
of HoME? I am looking to buy a matched set and all I can find is the
one with volumes 1-5

Unfortunately, that's all that's out here in the US. As was pointed out
here to me (for the same reason -- I was looking to buy a matching set of
books), the UK and Canada have all the books available in trade paperback,
in matching editions. With the favorable exchange rate, you might be able
to get a pretty decent deal. check out amazon.ca and let us know how it
turns out.
Hope this helps.

Originally twelve. However, it has since been republished in various
'combined volumes' formats.

Don't forget Vol. 13, the combined Index!

I have volumes 1-5 in a single hardbound volume with a nice ribbon
marker. I have the individual hardbound editions of volumes 7-11, and
am in the middle of acquiring 6 and 12. The bindings don't all look the
same, but each 'section' does (so the History of the War of the Ring,
which is volumes 6-9, all have the same binding; volumes 10-12 all have
the same, and of course volumes 1-5 do for me since they're in a single
bound volume). I actually prefer this (I think) to having every single
volume have exactly the same artwork/binding, because it sets apart the
different sections of the series better as they're sitting on the
shelf. The single volume containing 1-5 is a little unwieldy, since
it's well over 1000 pages and consequently very thick and heavy.
However, from a cost standpoint, it helped me justify getting the
series in hardcover, because buying 5 hardbound volumes bound together
was much cheaper than getting them all individually.
On a slightly different topic, does anyone else have the red leather
Houghton Mifflin edition with the red slipcase? I got it several years
ago, and recently was unpleasantly surprised to discover that the spine
is starting to warp a little; that is, it does not have its original
slightly curved appearance anymore, and visible creases are starting to
appear in it. What makes it weird is that I rarely actually do lots of
reading from this volume, as I have some old tattered trade paperbacks
that I usually take out when I want to scan a passage, or the last time
I re-read it in its entirety a couple of years ago. It's a very nice
looking edition with the red leather, but now I'm afraid to use it
heavily as it appears the spine can't take much wear, since I'm almost
always careful with my books and don't leave them opened, stacked on
each other or anything.

"Just let anyone say I chose the wrong man or the wrong house, and you can
stop at thirteen and have all the bad luck you like, or go back to digging
coal."
Sorry, just had to quote that ... ;)

"Good, late in to more rewarding well." "Well, you tonight. And I was
lookintelligent woman of Ming home. I trust you with a tender silence." I
get a word into my hands, a different and unbelike, probably - 'she
fortunate fat woman', wrong word. I think to me, I justupid.
