Boy, do I ever agree with that. The scene in the book very efficiently
made two points: Aragorn showed his nobility by refraining from attacking an
ambassador, even under extreme provocation; and this particular ambassador
was--in spite of his bluster--really a snivelling coward who only made threats
while protected by his "diplomatic immunity."

The movies were a real mixed bag for me as well. On Usenet the extremes
on both sides tend to predominate, but I suspect that a plurality of Tolkien
fans had roughly that reaction to them.

I'd say instead that on Usenet the extremes on both sides talk
loudest. :) Those of us who had mixed feelings about the movies tend
not to have much to say in the midst of an argument that goes like,
"Anyone who likes the movies hates the books!" "No! Anyone who
dislikes the movies is an idiot!" Posting a statement like "there
were good parts and bad parts" into a thread like that is just asking
for abuse from both sides.
But if you look back at the initial reviews and comments posted after
each installment came out, I think you'll see that rather a lot of
them were torn between enjoyment of some aspects of the films and
disappointment with others. To give a personal example, I know that
my reviews of FotR and TT were pretty well received here (I still
haven't managed to expand my brief RotK comments into a full review);

It's been 18 months Steuard, you've got to complete the review! In addition
to expanding your thoughts on the film, I'd be interested to read your
thoughts on the EE DVDs.
