I am going to switch my current web host to another one, one that
includes php cgi etc..
I plan to add a photo gallery with comments and an online journal. I
don't know any php or cgi so I need a software package to help me
out...There seem to be a rather large amount of these things out
there, any persons Here have any recommendations???

You can get Naig - NotAnotherImageGallery. It has comments and a rating
system, and all you have to do is upload images to your webserver. It also
has a customizable CSS-based layout. Best of all it's free, get it at
http://naig.sourceforge.net. It is in a .rar archive, though, and you'll
need to get 7-zip at http://www.7-zip.org to be able to extract it. You
will find that when I look for a software package, I often just search
http://www.sourceforge.net for it. It's definitely cheaper. }:=8)
BTW, If you need a simple CGI script, I might be able to help.

CGI isn't really a programming language, it's an interface. It reads imput
from a form via 'STDIN', processes it, and writes the results to 'STDOUT'.
PHP is the 'PHP Hypertext Preprocessor'

No. For anyone out there who might have other programs and not realise that
they can already open rar files.

Well, considering all the others came first and started stealing formats
from previous programs, I still have the useless ones...
--> Yeah. And it has file splitting/recombining.
.....That's why I have WinRar....

Same here. Of the /free/ ones I've seen, 7-zip is my favorite. It
supports more formats than I previously knew existed, and has file
splitting/recombining.

Me too, but I got rid of it already. But the method is not a suggested
one for good people anyway *chuckles* Seriously, due to exchange rate,
it prevent me from registering most of the programs...

Or me, because I'm a cheap skate with no money. I deal with trials unless I
feel that I want or need the "registered" version.

Same here. Seems very few like to pay for computer programs. That's why
68% of web pages are hosted with Apache HTTP
Server(http://httpd.apache.org).

I think the cost has little to do with Apache's success--keep in mind
that most web servers are hosted by businesses, and businesses don't mind
spending lots of money for a good product. Also, for the specific case
of Apache, web servers have been traditionally Unix-based, so that sets
limits on the biggest competitor (IIS). Since businesses don't mind
paying money for good "solutions" (ever notice how nobody tries to sell
"products" anymore, they sell "solutions"?), that's where a lot of
software companies make their money, and why some specialized software
can cost thousands of dollars per license. (Indeed, some software
companies make their products free for non-commercial use, figuring the
advertising they get from having home users try their product is better
than the income they'd get from it.)
/Individuals/ might not like to pay for software--that I'd agree with.
But the success of Apache might not be the best example of that.

I agree with Pyros that Apache is a bad example.
However, I do agree that open source software is so popular. I went to a
lecture by Jon "Mad Dog" Hall (for those who don't know who he is, he is the
executive director of Linux International, and from his nick name, he
probably had something to do with Mad Dog Linux). He was talking about how
open source is just that much better. One of his examples dated back to his
college years where he'd pay $6 for a word processor, copy it 6 times and
sell the copies to his friends for a buck. He made back his $6 and he still
had his copy of the software.
And if he found a bug in it, he could fix it. No need to mess around with
tech support, waiting hours on the phone. It was just done.
You get a better product for less money when ANYONE can fix a bug and send
the fix back to the producer for them to incorporate and distribute.
(BTW, I fell half-asleep part of the way through and it was a while ago (ok,
ok, I forgot most of it in about 3 hours)).

Yes, I gave a poor example. For a _poorer_ site:
http://www.luxuriousity.com
Office Professional = OpenOffice.org
Photo Professional = The GIMP
Photographer's Dream Professional = The GIMP
Luxuriousity SQL Server = MySQL
This is not a comprehensive list, just what I recognize easily. They offer
these programs for Windows and Mac. Just look at the screenshots. If
you've ever used the open source programs, you'll easily recognize them. I
have not purchased their software, so I don't know if the licenses and
source code are provided. Chances are they aren't. :-)

I have GIMP, I believe that the source can be acquired, but I haven't gone
looking.
OpenOffice I know source can be acquired as well, but I have not gotten the
program myself even.

That's the theory, at least. However, the vast majority of software
users don't have the requisite skills to locate and fix a bug--and the
majority of users who *do* have those skills probably don't have the time
or the inclination. That being said, sometimes the model works quite
well--I know multiple people who worked on several open-source projects
(from submitting patches to full-scale development).

Well, the point was that the company appeared to be selling GPL'd
software, and mention nothing about distributing the source (which would
be a violation of the license).

"Microcomputer software." They do, in fact, make quite a bit of software
for microcomputers (i.e. desktops/workstations, as opposed to
mainframes).

I kind of got the point; I was simply saying that I find OpenOffice
better than Microsoft Office, even if I don't count the significant
price difference.

Not in OpenOffice. What features are you looking for in a mail program?
Thunderbird has extensions that add things like a calender, Post-It
style notes, OpenPGP encryption/decryption, a 'send later' button, and more.

Well, it depends on what your needs are. If you're just using Outlook
for email (or if you're referring to Outlook Express), then yes,
anything. ]:-8)~ I recommend Mozilla Thunderbird as an easy-to-use,
open-source graphical mail/news client. http://www.mozilla.org
However, the full Outlook (not OE) has many functions other than just
email--calendaring, task lists, etc. You can get individual programs to
do the various other tasks, but they won't be integrated like Outlook.
The only major open-source equivalent to Outlook that I know of is called
Evolution (http://gnome.org/projects/evolution/), which only runs on
Linux AFAICT.

I have a question of my own since this is becoming the computing thread,
my lairmate had suffered through the use of an iMac for several years
before I got her her own PC, the mac was relagated to part-time usage
for graphics editing with software not on the PC, recently the power
supply in the mac fragged itself and as of yet we've been unable to find
a replacement so she can at least salvage her files from the damn
aquarium... if anyone has something of helike they could sspare it'd be
appreciated... if nnot I might just make a real aquarium of the bloody
thing. ;)

I don't just mean the email, heck my calculator can get email, I mean

LOL!
My friend usualy said. If any things goes wrong, blame on Microsoft.
So I ask what if it's Linux that goes wrong? He replied me that's also
because of Microsoft. *chuckles*
