Just saw this real world spitting image of Minas Tirith on tv. Ok, it
doesn't have seven rings and it's a seaside location, but I thought you
might enjoy a look at the Mont St. Michel in the Normandy, France.
Stunning location, if you ask me.

That's not Minas Tirith. I thought it was Camelot (or maybe it was
Launcelot's home - something from the Morte d'Arthur, anyway).

It does resemble Tolkien's rendering of Minas Tirith to a certain
degree.
I don't know if he was ever in that area, though.

You really should learn to quote some of the text which you are replying
to. Then people might know what you are talking about.

There was no need to quote the text in this discussion, Dan, as the
subject line makes it clear I was following up to the Hardy Hestert
thread.
Of course, if you want you to ask Google to stop improving their
interface, I'll be most appreciative.

Do you lack the computer/technical competence to use a real newsreader
application? Why do you post from Google Groups, anyway?

Portability. Ease of access.
I put up with the sucky improvements in interface design because,
frankly, I never met a newsreader yet that didn't get progressively
worse with each upgrade as well.

Use xnews, which is easily portable between machines (just copy the
folder over). It's also reached its final version, having last been
updated in 2002, and having reached a point that its creator deems
ideal for his own use.

Then stop upgrading it. Assuming you are using Windows, I hear that Forte
Agent and Xnews are nice, not to mention the Mozilla Thunderbird
email/newsgroups app...

I believe the model for the throne room of MT was modelled after the
Romanesque church of Vezalay.
see: www.roman.net/vezalay/vezalay.htm
There is a picture of the sanctuary that struck me as Denethor's domain!

Not sure what the most Minas-Tirith-like cities are...Macchu Picchu
is hilly and with layers of walls too...but what gets me about Mont
St. Michel is that, across the English Channel,is a place with the
same name in English (St. Michael's Mount) and similar tidal status
(for centuries,Mont St. Michel has been connected to the mainland by
a causeway at high tide, the long-flooded plain around it exposed only
at low tide;while St. Michael's Mount is an island at high tide and
a causeway appears at low tide).

Le Grande Rue looks a bit like Dragon Alley in _Harry Potter_.

There has never been a mention of "Dragon Alley" in any Harry Potter
book. We have seen and read about Diagon and Knockturn Alleys,
though.

In Mary Stewart's Arthurian novel _The Wicked Day_ it's the hideout
for a gang of outlaws, led by a giant, who rape & murder Elen /
Elaine. She attributes the legendary kernel of the episode to
Geoffrey of Monmouth rather than to Malory.

a) yes, I believe he was, during WWI, though I may be misremembering
b) no matter in any case, Mont St. Michel was and is famous and was
often depicted in art, described in manuscripts and texts Tolkien was
familiar with, and accessible by boat from England, and once
photography was widespread, often photographed and ued in movies
But I agree with you--I don't think MSM is a direct influence on
Tolkien's depiction of Minas Tirith, but it certainly is on Jackson's
depiction of the city.

Both have spires; there the resemblence ends. MSM is out in the sea,
that is the opposite of MT which is built into the mountains. MSM is a
pretty monastery, MT is a rock-hard castle.
Google the castle in Salzburg, that is much more similar.
Masada is somehat similar, though much more barren.

Hi!
I don't find the inside of St. Vezelay too similar to the throne room of
Minas Tirith. Perhaps I haven't found the picture you referred to yet
since the link above shows me an error404 only.
St. Vezelay seems to be romanesque on the step to gothic as far as I can
tell while Minas Tirith looks altogehter very romanesque.
