Got a vente coffee with half and half from Starbucks this morning. They're
printing pithy quotes on the sides of the cups these days, and mine was "The
Way I See It #42." It said:
"We know that chimpanzees possess language, culture, and self-awareness, so
why don't we afford them rights? The most common argument is that if we
give chimps rights, the next thing you know we'll be giving rights to
squirrels. It seems to me, however, a pretty poor decision to deny rights
to those who deserve them lest we accidentally afford them to those who
don't. -- David Liss, author of 'A Spectacle of Corruption' and 'The Coffee
Trader.'"

I seem to remember something about large apes in New Zealand
having some basic human rights. Can't remember the details.

I remember talking to an old Native-American-ish woman. I told
her I had been pondering that old saying "do the right thing and
you'll be okay" when I realized it was okay to use less energy
than I do, but it's a lot of work. I don't use much energy.

As I recall, chimps were designated as hominids in teh UK and killing one
was therefore homicide. It was years ago I read that.
