Good to see you! Some of us still have you out-olded in the old fart
department, of course -- but personally, I try to work from home rather
than going into the office. They still haven't fixed the air purifier
in there, and I always pass out when I walk through the door. ;)

I'm not on Second Life--do I really need another computer thing taking

I just wanted to note that it has been very interesting reading your

I tried second life and managed 6 hours before I got pissed at the controls
(and everything else) and uninstalled and unregistered. My opinion is that
it's a nice idea, the graphics are great, but the controls and game play
suck (that and why on Earth (or anywhere else) would I want to pay virtual
taxes on virtual land with virtual money that I have virtually earn when I
don't even what to do it IRL?).

My memory being what it is, I can't remember who arrived when, these
days. Eredien still pops in, but even Wyrm hasn't posted lately, so
there aren't many of Nineties vintage left, I don't think. A few
more still maintain LiveJournals and visit Alfandria, though.

Well, I've been remiss there, of course -- it's all too easy to slip
out of touch, but that's no excuse. Still, you're back again, which
allows me to catch up with you. :) Won't be quite as though you'd

Greetings, m'Lord! It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. :-)

We are hoping to go to Calgary...along with the rest of the world, it
would seem! It has become a very popular place lately. Still, the
humans have family there so that and the lower taxes are drawing them
to that area, even though they'd quite like to go to Vancouver if they
could afford it! ;-)

Of course, they may not be able to go yet - *I* could just fly over,
but apparently humans need a piece of paper to say they are allowed to
go! I am told they just need to go to a doctor and have needles stuck
in them to see if they are healthy...I could do that for them!
<sharpens talons with great care...>

I gather from other posts that you are also in Canada...where do you
live? :-)

I certainly hope so! There seems to be so much that can go wrong...or
not well, at any rate. I am sure all the worry will be worth it in

I found the dragon code on Wyrm's website, but nothing had been
updated since about 2002. I was wondering if he was still around - he
has always been here every time I have visited, and the place would
not be the same without the grumpy old so-and-so! ;-)

Has there been any sign of Rasha, Jia or whatever she is calling
herself now? The last I heard, she was "expecting hatchlings" but I
did not know if that referred to real life or not!

Erm... I can't remember which one I was working at when we were last
in touch. <:) I've moved jobs once since I went into newspapers,
and have been at the current one for almost spot on five years.
Though how much longer that lasts is anyone's guess -- I'm starting

True enough. It's meant plenty fo time for planning, at least!

Look at it like this: Canada is a lot better set up for them then
Britain. One flake of snow, everyone drives at 10mph and all the
trains are half an hour late. Canada, from what I can tell, shrugs
its shoulders and gets on with things.

And hey, when was the last time we had enough snow to make a proper
snowman?

Oh, I forgot to mention, Karenji (now more commonly known as Kaji)
and Jaggath are finally moving in together this year, after a long
wait. They're both from our era, and Hespa still visits, too.

Definitely not RL. :) She's not often seen here, but as with
several of those I've mentioned as well as others including Baxil,
LiveJournal is often the place to find her these days.

The MUCK is also more active than the newsgroup -- its current home
is at jaguar.chameleon.net and you might catch some of the older
fruites there.

One of the big blogging tools, but a real strength over the others is
its community facilities and ease of keeping in touch with other
people, rather than simply acting as an online diary. Go to
http://www.livejournal.com and do a username search for Alfandria.
Quite a few of the riper types are members, and you can see their
journals.

I'm not on that list, as it happens, but you can find me through many
of the folks who are. :)

Lairs aren't quite so popular these days, so there's a good chance of
it!

Cow town. AKA Stampede City. AKA Calgary, Alberta. In the northwest
quadrant. Right beside Market Mall (third largest mall in Calgary I
believe, behind Sunridge Mall and Chinook Centre). Send me an e-mail
when you get close to being here and let me know where you settle.
There are also a couple of others who don't frequent Alfandra (ie they
never post or even read from what I gather) but whom I have contact with
via MSN, two of whom I've met in person, and the third I have yet to.

M'Lord, I've heard of a con in your general vicinity (I.E. Canada).
Camp Feral http://www.campferal.org/

From the site's FAQ:
What is Feral!?

Feral! is a five day Furry event in the wilds of central Ontario where fans
of anthropomorphic art, writing, games, and lifestyle can gather together in
a relaxed atmosphere far away from the stresses of ordinary life.

Feral! was started by several members of the Toronto furry community who
wanted a local Convention for Canadian furs, and others worldwide who would
be interested in attending. However, the TorFur members wanted something
distinctive that was a truly different experience from any other furry con.

In late 1997, Terry Wessner proposed a "Furry University" concept, which
would host drawing, writing, costuming workshops in intensive, hands-on
sessions. At the same time, Dan "Silfur" Markey put forth the idea for a
"Summer Camp" for furry fans, complete with bus ride, counsellors, and
outdoor activities. Ken "Pardus" Suzuki, and many volunteers and friends
merged these two concepts together into what is now known as Feral!

It doesn't fill my needs as effectively, and it doesn't have a
spellchecker. Look, I'm not going to go quietly if you try!

Are you /that/ bad at spell checking? Besides, the filter power more
than makes up for anything that might be lacking.

No, but I have certain blind-spots -- notably double letters -- which
occasionally require me to use a dictionary when I'm working. It's
just nice to have the option, and Xnews doesn't. Gravity did, but
wasn't what I wanted in other ways. And while SLRN allowed me to use
my own text-editor, I couldn't make head nor tail of its back-end.
<:)

> Besides, the filter power more than makes up for anything that
> might be lacking.

Aside from marking the occasional thread to be ignored (easier to do
in Agent than Xnews, AFAICS), I've never, ever needed filters on
Usenet. My ISP already ditches the spam (I've seen none whatever in
AFD for months), and I don't generally believe in plonking people.

And there's this issue with manual identity swapping that I've
already discussed, which is the important thing. I'm grateful for
your suggestion about setting up another server profile, but don't
see why it should be necessary when the option for different IDs on
different groups /should already be available/.

That's that place that finally realized it can't do without Canadian
beef. Although the price of Canadian beef is going to be quite high,
since we're not going to be shipping even half of what we used to. So
if you like Alberta beef, it might be cheaper to come to Alberta to get
it.

I'm fairly lazy, I'm afraid -- I just want something I can install,
tweak a few settings and use, not something I virtually have to build
from the ground up myself. It's one of the reasons I've never tried
tinkering with Linux.

Possibly so, but then I'd have to wait, investing more time in a
program with which I'm not over-enamoured, for an upgrade that might
never be issued, anyway. As you've probably noted from my headers,
I'm still using Xnews at the moment, but this would largely be
because of the reason I cite above. :) As soon as I get round to
it, I'll pay for Agent and move back to the reader I've always liked
best.

Good defence, though. :)

Other people build the front-ends I use, since my programming skill ends
at BASIC.

To each his own. I don't have multiple personas I want to use on
different groups, so this isn't an issue for me.

Not good enough, though..... One day, though, when you least expect it,
I'll break in in the night and reinstall Xnews on you!! };=8Þ

True...apparently it can take a day or two for things to start working
smoothly at the start of winter, but then they are usually fine. I

Too hot. Anything about about 22 and I melt. And it's been high 20s
all week.....

No, needles and scales don't work very well..... And even if they
