Are we one behind or two behind on the CotW now?
My CotW was due for next week, but unless I've somehow missed a few of 'em,
I don't think that's happening. Anyone keeping track?

I should be, but have been facing a double whammy: lack of time and then
a switch to a different computer and different newsreader (Thunderbird's
reader) that isn't anywhere near like what I was used to and so I've
just not been able to catch it (and of course the page isn't up to date
just now either). Thanks for watching this and following through.
Think I'm just going to install my Forte Agent on this computer so I can
take things in at a glance.

Install Xnews (a 680k zipfile) to a folder, and you won't have
problems with switching computers. Using a different machine for a
few weeks? Just copy the folder over.

Better yet, install Linux and use Pan... :) This has the added benefit
of freeing you from spyware/adware/viruses too, and the associated costs
of those issues. It's a win-win...

Thanks! That looks interesting. The only red flag that pops up is
Slyck's "*relatively* easy to use" (emphasis added). I really am a
computer imbecile, apart from a passing acquaintance with some HTML
tags, and that makes me wonder how steep the learning and maintenance
curves are with Xnews.
Otherwise, it looks very good; frankly, I never use all of Agent's
features. Was just thinking more of the familiar layout and the way
unread message headers can be highlighted with color: on the way for a
cup of tea during the work day I can just quickly check it out and see
whether I need to spend some time later with it. Also I can work in it
without cluttering up the screen with all automatically downloaded new
headers (492 this afternoon) and can even select which threads I want to
update. How does Xnews compare in these areas?
Dan, I actually explored the Linux option with my clients once --
Walmart.com was offering a Linux computer that ran Windows programs and
as my work production is in Word it seemed worth exploring. However,
they went into a state of catatonic shock. It's not that they don't
like Linux per se, but that they can't bring themselves to try it. They
import the files into some sort of system that uses Windows and can be
extremely (and not always logically) fussy. I think it is female (BG).
There's a very heavy volume and so any system downtime causes all
sorts of problems. By unspoken agreement we decided to just let well
enough alone.
Anyway, am ramping up for another work week now but will get that page
updated and try to get a handle on the progress of the CotW appendix
discussions as soon as I can. In the meantime, well done, all! and
please do carry on.

My pleasure. Between Larry and I we've come to the conclusion we're two
weeks off schedule, nothing too unmanageable. Good luck with your
newsreader problem(s).

I've been using XNews myself for quite a while, tough for me the
ability to create regular expression filters was one of the great
selling points.
XNews is really quite easy to use and maintain at a sensible level, but
to get the full benefit, you do need to know a bit about news and mail
headers and about regular expressions. The point is that you can work
it at a very basic level, and it will work just fine -- there really is
no pressing need to open up all the configuration choices until one is
ready for it.

Of course, what you _really_ should do is get yourself an iBook (known,
strangely enough, to certain funny-talking foreigners as an "eBook") and
iinstall Thunderbird on *that*

I know I know, isn't it ridiculous that so much time and energy on the
internet is spent on name-calling and flame wars? bloody shame.
