I've been wondering -
since so many of you are dragons, have any of you ever tried your hand
at an art called woodburning? It's the art of burning pictures into
wood; they can be very beautiful with practice. Someday this summer I
hope to do a simple dragon portrait.

I personally have not, but I enjoy what people have done to wood that way.

My walking staff has dwarven and elvish Tolkien runes burned into it,
that and a nice dragon that I carved out really small holes and filled
in with silver for the eyes.

Tried my hand at it when I was a kid. Very beautiful results for the
steady hand and sharp eye. Very hot element tho - be careful!

I can adjust how much I breathe out, from a full "melt steel and turn to
ash" down to a "melt steel and turn to puddle", but not much more
finesse than that..... Plus, you need some artistic talent in the first
place, and I've got less in my entire hoarde than most people have in

Actually, substances tend to burn or melt, but not both, so that
variation might be even less than you think. >:)

Sodium. Drop a large hunk (grape sized should do it...no, half that) of it

I think such art used to be called "pokerwork" from the implements formerly
used, ie hot pokers from the fire.
There has been some of that, quite good work, on auction from the
"Catharsis" comic site...

I'll be doing as humans do (having little finesse with my own breath)
and using one of those little electrically heated metal tools (I don't
think they have a name; they're often shaped like a thick pen with a

I don't have much either, but that's no reason not to try. I mean

Actually, sodium doesn't melt, nor does it burn. It reacts with water
to form sodium oxide and hydrogen, giving off heat in the process
(that's the flame you see) and when enough hydrogen collects, it
ignites, as hydrogen is apt to do, and explodes, also as hydrogen is apt
to do).
My chemistry teacher told me of an amusing story of when he was in
college, when his prof asked him and a few friends to dispose of some
old sodium. It turns out that they had a moat around the school (such
as it was) and the chunk of sodium took 3 people to carry. The water
spout they caused went 2 storeys higher than where they were, and they
were on the 7th floor.....

Close, but not quite. A soldering iron is for precision work, it's cone
shape focuses as much heat as possible into as tiny a point as possible.
This is to make sure that people don't accidentally solder a wire to the
wrong part of a circuit board, or something like that. An artist's tool
is often sort of a wedge shape, allowing beginners to make stick figures
with ease while allowing pros to add a bit of shading to their work.
A very small difference, I know, but still a difference. I learned it
the hard way the last time I tried to build a tape player from a kit.

Well, if steel melts but leaves behind ash floating on top, which is
residue of impurities in the steel, true, but they burned, then it might
be possible to be close to burning and melting.
Otherwise, they might just sublimate, but I don't want to be in the room
where steel gets hot enough fast enough to go from solid directly to
gas.....

I have a tale to tell - o
I used to do radio repairs in my bedroom (now I foul a whole house)
I used an old kitchen cabinet with a drop down front as a workbench, and had
the soldering iron hooked to a loop above the bench on one of the cabinet
doors. Which came loose.
As the iron (live) hurtled towards the carpet I made a swift grab 'twixt
finger and thumb.
*tag*
*ssssssssssss*
*curse*
and the iron landed on the carpet which it burnt slightly (as well)
when you just catch the iron, the tip is uppermost.

We did that experiment. The first piece just floated around the beaker,
self propelled. The second, and bigger piece, caught fire but nothing
more. The third, and large piece, exploded almost on contact with the
water destroying one beaker, cracking the second, and knocking over the
blast shield.....

The one that puttered around would have been most observable to be in a
liquid state. It was puttering around on the released hydrogen.
The third, *grins* sounds like...explosive fun!

I just finished the pic!
You can see it here:
http://home.comcast.net/~dearingj/Images/dragon1.jpg (485x1280 version)
http://home.comcast.net/~dearingj/Images/dragon1_small.jpg (243x640 version)
This is my first time doing any shading or scales. I probably should
have used finer-grain wood, but I wasn't sure how this would turn out
and didn't want to mess up good wood.
