I would say you are very cynical. I am sure there are people that are doing
it strictly for the deductions but there are just as many if not more people
who really wish to make the world a better place and don't need the tax
deductions (Bill Gates for example <http://www.gatesfoundation.org/>).

I think calling Bob Geldolph a hypocrite says more about you then Sir Bob.

You think "tax write-off" is a motivation? You obviously haven't a clue
how that works. Tax deductons (or non-refundable credits in Canada)
mean that a donation of amount x actually costs qx, where 0 < q <= 1.
Actual value of q depends on jurisdiction to which you pay taxes.
For example, a donation of $100 here in Canada might actually cost
around $75 - provided your have at least $25 in assessed tax. This
means that if you actually want to spend $100, you could donate about
$133. (Consult a tax return form for correct figures.) Tax benefits
are meant to encourage donations, but they don't make them free.

The only condition under which a donor might actually benefit
financially from a donation is when a donation is made "in kind", and
the donation is over-valued. (For instance a friendly art appraiser
says that the artwork you are donating from your collection is worth
$100,000 when it's true market value is much less.) This is called
"fruad" and there are laws against that.

And what about his time as well? He has donated a huge proportion of his
time to raising awareness - and that in my opinion is worth more than
one man donating is wealth (no matter how much). A million people

hmm, it would probably take me way to long to explain how the tax
system works in this country but it all works on percentages. If you
really want to know contact Revenue Canada - isn't it nice that
Cretian spent millivons trying to combine Revenue Canada with Canada
Cusoms and now it has cost millions more to return to the name Revenue
Canada? Anyone think of all that waste?

We have had huge, huge floodings in Alberta recently and of course
that lying, manipulating thief we continue to call Prime Minister took
time out of his busy day to come and see it. He could have saved the

a certain belief passes the tests of evidence, deduction, and logic, it
should be kept. If it doesn't, the belief should not only be discarded, but
the thinker must also then question why he was led to believe the erroneous

You missed it....there is no majority voting anymore..most people
today can't be bothered to vote knowing that the government will just
do what the hell they want to do anyway and we just have to send along
our paychecks like the little sheep they have turned us all into

This is what bugs me: Geldof and others in his cabal say that if only we in
the "greedy, overfed" West throw money at a problem (hunger, AIDS, ets), the
world's problems will be fixed. During the first round of helping out
Ethiopia out in 1985 (with the Live Aid, USA for Africa and the rest), the
money NEVER got to where Geldof and Co. intended it to go. It ended up in
the hands of African Dictators who could not have cared less if most of
their people starved, so long as their pockets were deep and filled with
money.

The answer is NOT in the West. Or in throwing money at it. It's about the
goverments in the Sudan, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia, as Richard Pryor used to
say, getting there crap together.
