Sadly up late listening to radio 5. The regular movie guru says he's seen
HHGG and it is fab !
He reckons they have done an excellent job in retaining the humour and
introducing modern effects which most big budget films would be proud of.

In the two thousand and fifth year of Bob, Kaare Fiedler Christiansen's
voice said the following, in wonderful perfect quadrophonic sound with
distortion levels so low as to make a man weep:

Did you see the review Simo linked to? The balanced but ultimately
positive, as I think he described it.

(He's David Aldridge BTW. Brain wasn't functioning fully last night and
could only remember the David bit. )
Reading different reviews it looks like they've produced a film to please
most movie goers. It isn't the same thing as doing a good film of HHGG which
is why Simo was so disappointed, I guess.
Not long now to see for ourselves !

A few months ago, before he saw the film, Simo posted a review from one of
the people who saw the Pasadena screening which said, "Overall, the movie is
a mixed bag: Funny, well-acted, but plot and structure-wise, it's a mess."
My very first thought was, "Sounds like HHGG to me!"

Agreed! Actually, I think that's a very weak point in Simo's review. How
can he complain that it's unstructured? Of course it is! The Guide never
had structure in any incarnation, and it's nothing new that things
happen in different order for different reasons in any incarnation.
The main points why I fear this movie are specifics like
<SPOILERS BELOW THIS POINT>
-the improbability drive moving the ship to random locations - that's a
horrible way and completely non-sensical,
.. a bad build-up to the ultimate answer, which I hope may be proven wrong.
That said, I remember the first time I saw the TV version I thought the
build-up was rather poor, but suddenly realised that that was because I
knew what would happen beforehand, so maybe that's just the problem when
seeing the movie as a fan.
It may be that the last many months have simply seemed to promise a
fantastic movie, and the fact that it was merely great (and perhaps
actually best for people not knowing the books) was too much of a
disappointment for Simo. In that case, his review has probably helped me
by lowering my expectations to the point where I can enjoy the movie for
what it is, and not what it might be.
I hope...

And I forgot: Changing lines in jokes that are otherwise kept intact.
That is to me the worst part of Simo's review, because I just don't see
the point. I know what some will say: Timing issues may be different in
the movie, but I don't trust that much, for most of Douglas Adams' joke
to work the timing is perfect as it is, and that's why every version of
the Guide almost always keeps the dialogue intact - that's the true
humour of the Guide really.

Only time will tell I guess...

That would have been a good response one post back. My opinion of
taking the exact wording of important lines lightly isn't likely to
change, but I may grudgingly overlook it if the rest of the film
works for me.
Speaking for myself, maybe time will tell you something of note.

The friend I saw it with hadn't read the book. He liked it to.

Lately Bush has been offering to solve the problem of higher gas
prices by "building more oil refineries." I'm missing the logic of that.
Since when does building cookie factories cure a grain shortage?
