| Help Finding Series Re-Recodrings (1979) [message #420] |
Sa, 16 April 2005 07:07 |
|
Been many many years since I posted here; and oddly enough, I believe
my question was somewhat similar.
I have all of the "Original Radio Series" CDs... and while wonderful
and extremely entertaining as they always are, when I was a child, the
first version I heard played to me was the LP Re-Recordings... which
to this day I have not been able to find again.
The series I heard was very similar, though some of the timings were
different, a few of the voices were different (Vroomfondel was not an
American) and some of the lines were slightly changed.
These are the versions I know best and have memorized :) But cannot
find anywhere. Does anyone have Digital copies, or know where CD
versions of these recordings can be found?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

There should be people who can help you, but if not, I'll carry on
pressuring my father into letting me install the program I need to put them
onto my PC. But as I say, there should be people reading who can help, anyway.

I'm afraid E-bay is your best bet for actually finding the LPs or MCs of
the rerecorded versions. As far as I know, there are no plans for
actually rereleasing them.
Sorry about the bad news.

Your best bet would be to go over to;
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.comedy
and
alt.binaries.multimedia.comedy.british
and
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.audiobooks
and
alt.binaries.sounds.radio.bbc
and put in a request - I did see these in mp3 (the
2LP HHGTTG and 1LP RATEOTU) posted about
6 months ago, albiet incomplete and from vinyl -
I have the old vinyl LP's but no way at the moment
to tranfer them to computer ( no turntable )
There is bound to be someone out there who grabbed
them and would repost.
One warning, watch what you say on the bbc group
as it is visited by some complete arseholes and you
may be flamed simply by asking something about it
as it isn't strictly 'radio'..
I prefer these to the original radio ones. I listened
to them over and over as a youngster. The soundscape
was much more lush and everything sounded so much
better!

Funny. This seems to be one of those cases where you more or less
automatically prefer the one you heard first and learned by heart :-)
Personally I found especially the sound effects in the radio series a
lot better, and I also preferred the storyline in the radio series.
I can't rule out, though, that this is simply because of the fact that I
heard them first and see them as the "real" hitchhiker radio show.

Yes, I know it's rather unusual, but there are a few scenes from the
LP version that I miss. :)
Thanks for the helpful tips, everyone... one thing that could help me
is what exactly these versions are called? There are lots of different
HHGTTG recordings on eBay and whatnot, but it's difficult to know (and
sometimes difficult to explain) exactly which version I'm looking for.

If you strike out everywhere else, I've got the 1982 Hannibal Records
version (HNBL 2301, manufactured in Canada, oddly enough) in genuine
crackly[1] vinyl format just begging to be given away. Restaurant (HNBL
1307) as well.
(Good grief, in this version Arthur just goes off with Ford! No arguing
Prosser into the mud, just off he goes. That's quite an omission...)

Wow,
That's not quite the one I'm looking for. :)
It's pretty much the same as the original series (almost
indistinguishable) except for a few differences... The biggest that I
can think of is instead of leaving the Restaraunt at the End of the
Universe in a military vehicle, I believe they take Hotblack Desiato's
ship to a Disaster Area concert - or it's the ship that will be flying
into the sun as the show's finaly.
There are also some different voices... have many of you heard this
version?

You're looking for Original Records ORA42 and ORA54.
Just ask the seller what code's on the LP, and good luck.

I own the LPs. So does my father, which I didn't find out til I'd bought
them myself. Bloody parents.

As evidenced by other posts in this thread, there are copies are
trackable down.
This is good, cos it means I don't have to advertise my already
digitised copy. That would be illegal afterall.
I *do* wish the vinyls would be re-released in digital form though. I
got into HHg via books, then TV, then radio, then vinyl... and if it
comes to a showdown between the first vinyl, and the equivelant radio
series bits, I'll go the vinyl. It has the benefit of time in
rewriting.

Until one has eaten a packet of crisps in front of a roaring fire, it is
difficult to appreciate how crackly my LPs are. Even then you really
need to be sitting next to someone making popcorn.

Um, well, the laws on electronic sharing are the only laws I don't follow -
and even then it's just with out of print materials. I believe that if
something's no longer commercially available, people should have the right
to share it and make it more available.
However, it's not my decision, so...

Thanks for tracking those down on eBay... unfortunately I'm in Canada
and the seller only ships within the UK... bugger. However, with your
help at least I have some more leads to track down :)
I am also dissappionted that no digital versions of these recordings
have been made. And if those 'digitised' copies ever make it to some
Internet somewhere, I would be interested in knowing :) However, until
then, my search for the LP's will continue!

How about if it's material not available in your country yet, and
material you are _quite_ definately going to pay for anyway when they
will be available? :-)
Would you consider that okay as well?
After all, August is quite a lot later than April :-)
