trying something new (venting) [message #4493] Sa, 16 April 2005 08:08

Well, I decided I have too many regrets for things that I had the
opportunity to do but didn't. I have the chance to not add to that list and
I'm grabbing it with both hands and gonna run with it. Paws and ride with
it. Learn it? *shrugs* Shall I start again and hope for more clarity?

The chance to learn to ride a motorcycle has darn near been handed to me on
a silver platter by engraved invitation. (How's that for mixing metaphors?)
I've always wanted to learn. I bought the bike, just paid for work that
needed to be done on it and now I wait for my course. I have to wait until
June 18th (and it's a long two day class) and if I pass the course I pay my
fee and get the motorcycle endorsement and can ride it legally.

So...the point of all this? Oh, yes, sorry. Train of thought was side
railed. *looks behind and sees the switch was moved* See? Anyway, I am
growing very tired of being told I am crazy to want to ride a bike. It's
dangerous - well so is my job. I could get hurt - not like I'm wrapped in
cotton wool now. It's not feminine - umm like detailing cars is considered
feminine? What kind of idiotic criteria is that to learn something new?

I am not jumping into this blind. I have been looking at helmets and learned
how to see if one fits properly. Heck, I've been checking into the outer
gear for a while now so that I can make an informed and intelligent decision
on those purchases. I've been reading the book I was sent. Been talking to
people that know how to ride for advice about stuff one isn't taught.

What am I missing here? And what right does anyone have to judge me based on
what I drive, ride, wear... you get the idea. *snarls and resettles wings*
Thank you. I feel some what better having shared my irritation.

Hehehe.

Good Luck and when on the road "may your God go with you" as Dave Allen used
to say.

You wouldn't get me on a bike, no ma'am.

But the good bikers are among the best on the road...to survive they have to
be.

Some of the eejits I've seen in my van trying to do things on a bike
probably won't see 19 without a major spill ... but all motorists (and I
drive a CAMPERVAN ph33r m3) have bike horror stories same as most
experienced bikers have motorist tales.

Biker joke for yez....

Q: How do you tell a happy motorcyclist?
A: Flies on his/her teeth.

Good luck with the test and biking thereafter.

I'd love to get one myself, but I can't afford it.....

I've been told I'm crazy for doing a lot of things. I never let it stop
me before, nor am I likely to again. As for feminine, femininity is
defined by females, thus, being female, anything you do is, by proxy,
feminine. But then, I'm crazy, remember? };=8Þ

Here's the only advice you need: don't fall off. Oh, and don't weave
through traffic or take short cuts at traffic lights. You're still a
vehicle, you have all the priveleges of a vehicle, but also all of the
responsibilities.

Anything you choose to do is your choice, not anyone else's. I'm not
saying you can't ask for advice, or take it, but that's all it is:
advice. What you choose to do with it is your choice and yours alone.
For example, I've been advising everyone to come to Calgary, either for
a visit or to live. So far, only Hespa's come to visit that I know of,
and nobody's come to live. And I'm fairly sure Hespa wasn't working on
my advice there, either };=8Þ

That's a very good idea. I wish everyone did that, instead of riding
around in shorts and a t-shirt, as many of the motorcyclists around
here do during the summer.

Sage. :P While I hardly recommend it, I've had more than a few spills
on motorbikes myself, so I can speak from some authority in saying
that, provided your accident is low-speed (as nearly all those not to
be blamed on mechanics or outright stupidity are), the right protective
gear will keep you fairly safe.

That said, please don't feel the urge to test my hypothesis. <:)

But those are two of the main advantages of having a motorcycle in the
first place. ;)

Not in my part of the world (number one is coming off on corners and

And not if you're good at them. :D

Watch out for cars, they do NOT see you, they will turn in front of you,
crowd you, and various other stupid things... been there, done it... and
wear a helmet.. it may save your life... and protective clothing, it may
save your skin!! Good luck with the course... I'd thought about it, but
after our motorcycle accident (watch out for sudden drafts!!) the insurance
company totaled the bike (minor damage, dent in gas tank, and speedometer
was broken) we decided to give up riding.... got a fiero instead... laugh...

Qvestion Rai...
do m'bikes have a "dip" on their headlight? I ask because I can't think why
they should, but suffer quite often from main beam in the mirrors and face
from overtaking m'bikes on the old North Circ. (give a bike enough room and
they flip the finger at the school run jams at Henly's Corner!)
At least a bike with a beam is visible.

Oh, I''ve turned that into almost a chant.... "Keep the wings closed, keep
'em closed." As it's a small bike, 250, I won't be on the highway for a
while. I'd prefer to have more experience before I do that.

Actually, they all do. :) In some ways, it's even more important for
bikes to dip headlights when there are cars ahead, because their main
light is that much higher than a normal car's, often pointing directly
into the mirror of the car in front.

> but suffer quite often from main beam in the mirrors and face from

That's the idea for the bikers who leave it on full beam all the time
-- and a recent study shows they're right. Headlights on full are the
biggest aid for a motorcyclist in alerting other drivers of his or her
presence. Unfortunately, while they promote the awareness, they take
away the ease of observation -- I find it might harder to work out how
far away a bike is when all I can see is the dazzle you're talking
about.

Expect more daytime main-beam use from now on, though -- most bike
manufacturers these days are hard-wiring the lights on, as with Volvos
and Saabs.
