Good read indeed.
"Maybe it's a generational thing as well. GR's strong views on conflict and
peace were tested in real war; he had actually flown aircraft, and been a
cop on the street. Other producers and writers for the original series had
real world backgrounds. Members of the original cast had experienced real
prejudice (although members of subsequent casts likely did as well), and
several were political activists who put their beliefs into practice. The
producers and writers of the later series seem to have been in television
their whole careers."

This is the reason, IMO, that gave TOS it's realism in the way the
characters interacted with each other. Writers and producers had real life
experiences, now a days they go to school and come out in their profession
with the piece of paper to "prove" it. Can one imagine a ex military pilot
and police officer trying to pitch a series now? He would be laughed out of
the boardroom by the "professional" writers and producers, as he had no
credentials and obviously didn't know how to get along in the entertainment
industry because he was out experiencing life instead of going to school for
4 or 5 years.

The only problem with this tripe is that it supposes that Roddenberry was in
fact a writer. He was a HORRID writer. I'd also say that almost all of
Roddenberry's stories about himself smack of self-aggrandizement at best and
wildly lying at worst.

When he DID write he did so horribly that Paramount wisely took him out of
the process, witness the horrible TMP and first two abysmal seasons of TNG.

What's really wrong with Trek is Paramount is cheap and just let B&B lazily
run it into the ground. Trying to keep the franchise going nonstop was
mistake because it introduced tired, hackneyed writing into the franchise
just trying to keep up with the weekly, 22-26 episode a season cycle.

"Franchise-fatigue" indeed!

I like the idea of either Frakes or Burton taking over. I am SURE they would
do it justice.

I personally don't have any problem with handing it to Manny Coto,
although Frakes or Burton would be ok as well.
