| Now I get to be paranoid. [message #4418] |

Alright, so before I told all of you about the problems I was having
with my bike. . . now I can add one more to the list. After spring
break, I came back with a skateboard so I could bring it into class
with me, and I've been using just that around campus and my bike for
work. But, a week ago I needed to get somewhere quickly with a rather
large backpack. So I took my bike. I locked up my bike in a well-lit
area next to a bunch of other bikes and went in to my meeting. When I
came out, I got on my bike to start riding home and as I went over a
curb, I suddenly found myself on the ground with the bike on top of me.
This little episode sent me to the hospital for three stitches in my
forehead and about six inches of road rash down my shoulder. Luckily I
didn't break anything. I am healing fine, and should be completely
whole in another couple of days.
What it appears happened was someone unscrewed the bolt holding the
front wheel in, so when I went over the bump, it popped out at me and
sent me flying over the handlebars into the street. I told the police
that this is what I think happened, and they agreed that it's likely,
but so many people handled my bike after that, they wouldn't be able to
tell who that someone might be. I've now taken to bouncing my bike and
testing the brakes every time I need to ride it somewhere. I've also
picked some alternate routes to classes and work. What I really need
to do is import my big little bro and his enforcer from back home. . .
I really hope someone just wanted my front wheel and gave up when they
found it was locked to the rest of the bike. It's scary to think that
someone's doing this on purpose.

Quite likely, actually. I was in Cambridge at the weekend (bikes bloody
everywhere!) and it's amazing how many people - even folks with quick
release front wheels - don't run the locking clamp/chain/wire through the
front wheel. Gotta be a market for 'em especially if the tyres are good....
There was one that had been clamped up near a corner and allowed to slide
over so that the front wheel was flat on and in the road... where apparently
something large had driven over it and forked it up... Ride like an
Egyptian....
I recall one years ago that had been chained to the railings on a local
roundabout....after the car had been towed away they left the remains for
the owner to find when he/she came back to unchain the bike.....

Indeed. I think your hopes probably reflect reality -- front wheels
and saddles, in these days of 'quick-release' nuts, are the main things
to get stolen from bicyles.
Glad to hear you weren't too badly hurt by the spill, but please, wear
a cycling helmet in future. <:)

I'm assuming by the above phrasing you're not just talking about the
mounting hardware..... };=8Þ

They're law in Alberta now. At least, up to age 18 they are.
