Suriankathernia
I was contemplating posting a: 'Hi, I'm new!' thread, but decided
against it despite the amusement it would bring me. I also recognise a
few names around here still, although if I know them from here
originally, or the MUCK, or various other sources... well, I'm unsure.
At any rate, I hope I don't have to repost this as an 'I'm new!'
thread. :)

I'm Suriankathernia, the Surian dragoness, often called 'Surianka' or
'Suri, I'm a Canuk, and I originally started posting in this Newsgroup
in February of 1999. I ended up being much more active over the
Alfandria MUCK, where I also started in February of 1999. I'm known in
Elljay land as 'nightlove' and I enjoy long flights on the beach... er,
*ahem*
Oh yeah, as a side note: I'm also an EQII addict currently.

I may not have been overly active on this NG since... well, since I
first left it back in 1999 (I've had a few "I'm back!" occurances, but
nothing that I ever seemed to follow through on) but I've been heavily
active on a few Internet forums now, and when I was finally reminded of
my original home I decided to attempt an actual return. :)

So, thought I'd say Hi, re-introduce myself, introduce myself to people
I don't know, and...
*chucks a few pies, hoping some will hit people she knows, then
flitters off into the night cackling wildly*

Welcome back Suriankathernia! I remember you from the MUCK. My name is pretty
much the same here as it is there. It's good to see you online here again!
How've you been?

*dodges pie* No, you don't know me, you're well before my time, but
welcome back, all the same. You wouldn't be the first ole' fruit to
delurk after several year's absence... I'd list off a few, but I'm bad
with names, and I'm sure one of our fellow alfandrian's can tell you,
if you really want to know. Anyway, as I said, welcome back, and
hopefully you won't go back into lurking any time soon. We're always
happy to see old faces returning around here.

No need -- I certainly recognise you, and I'm sure a few other folks
will, too. :) Welcome back, Suri! Long time, no see.

I did only when I really was new, since then I've just drifted into the
conversations, sometimes even posting an "I'm back" post.

Where in Canuckland? And I've never played EQ or EQII, but I'd like to,
if they came out with a single player version (kinda like the Diablo
series) that I can play without having to pay to be online. Since I
don't play onl;ine games much, it'd be a waste of money.

But in all honesty I don't have anything to add other than I do not play

I'd play Horizons, if they accepted something other than a credit card,

I got mine for $0.99, so I can't complain, even if they didn't list
having an online account as a requirement on the box.

Speaking of requirements, I just recently bought I of the Dragon, and
according to the box, one of the minimum requirements is a (can't find
the box now) 850GHz processor (I believe)

i wonder how much one of those costs ;p

do you think that would be the same for the demo? cause ive run that on
a 500MHz before.. though it did get slow once enimies ammassed... about
2-3sec per frame....

seems all the old systems will work themselves to death and never
complain.. the new systems will complain if something isnt what they
like even if they can esily run it...

It might be. Although mine keeps crashing due to a "driver conflict"
although I'm sure the driver is "Windows".....

I know what you mean. We had a 386 system (forget the speed) with 8MB
RAM at one point (it was a good system at the time) and I installed
Windows 95 onto it (Windows 95 was new at the time). If I installed a
similarly complex OS onto my system today, it would complete the POST
then slap me upside the head and tell me I'm an idiot for trying
something like that. The 386, however, did run Windows 95, despite it
being so horribly slow that it took about a half hour just to complete
booting. Needless to say, I downgraded back to Dos 6.22 and Windows 3.0
pretty darn quick };=8Þ

Yeah i guess it's mainly that the programmers only program for one card or
set of cards and if anything's not from THEIR family of cards, even if its
100% compatable, it goes *pfft*, I don't like this card so I am not gonna
work unless you buy THAT other card.

Heh... Try Windows For Workgroups 3.11 (it's good for networking). I have 2
machines now that have WFW as their os (it works fairly well)

I never had that, actually, and I only used it in school. That was
where I found the bug that makes it so you can't shut down if you log on
as another user in Netware through the command prompt.

Yeah, 'newly old' sounds about right. I'm not quite an 'olde whine'

places. :P
EQII was a present to me, as were quite a few months of play-time -- I
live with my current mate, and he's... a video-game addict, and bought
me a copy ahead-of-time so that I wouldn't be upset about him playing
it so often.
I am entirely amused at how my Random Act of Delurking (eep!) has
turned into a discussion about computers. How... typical... and
comforting. :)
Good to see both new and old faces here as well... I already appear to

THE LESSER-KNOWN PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES #10: SIMPLE

SIMPLE is an acronym for Sheer Idiot's Monopurpose Programming Language
Environment. This language, developed at the Hanover College for
Technological Misfits, was designed to make it impossible to write code
with errors in it. The statements are, therefore, confined to BEGIN, END
and STOP. No matter how you arrange the statements, you can't make a
syntax error. Programs written in SIMPLE do nothing useful. Thus they
achieve the results of programs written in other languages without the
tedious, frustrating process of testing and debugging.

Heh. Well, just because there exists a 600GHz transistor doesn't mean
that you'll see 600GHz processors anytime soon. ]:-8)~ You'd need
several transistors to make the basic gates, and putting any capacitative
load on them at all would slow them down. (This is somehow assuming that
it were feasible to mass-produce these and have them work reliably in a
full-scale microprocessor, ignoring the massive heat/power issues, and
ignoring that current processors use a different type of transistor--
mosfets instead of BJTs.) And you'd need cache memory that could
function that fast, etc. etc.

But it's interesting that you bring up the speed of light. Electrical
signals have to propagate through the processor for it to function.
These signals are electrons moving in wires, so they don't move at the
speed of light (if I remember the experiment I did in freshman-year
circuits class correctly, they move at about two-thirds c). But even if
they did move at the speed of light, do you know how far they could
travel in one clock cycle of a 3GHz processor?

....four inches (10 cm). Yep, that's all. If clock speeds get much
higher than they are today (and nowhere near 600GHz), then it will be
physically impossible to send a signal from one side of a processor to
another in one clock cycle. (When you think about the fact that current
processors have to send *the clock signal itself* across the processor,
and then do useful work in the remaining picoseconds, the engineering is
even more impressive.)

Where ever it was that I said that they increased the speed of light above
89,937,737,400 meters per second, a 600Ghz processor would still be slow
enough. };=3)

"Breaking No Laws by Braking a Beam

While the speed of light in a vacuum is Einstein's famous constant and a law
of nature, light's velocity can be manipulated as it moves in a non-vacuum.
Scientists have slowed, accelerated, and even stopped light in prior
experiments using exotic materials, such as crystals, atomic vapors and
rubidium gas. "

And more:

So, I must correct myself. While light can travel at superluminal speeds,
information can not: the message arrives out of order.

So all you need as a reassembler..... And some hefty EDC software.....

Not really. Imagine the light pulse as a unch of kids in no particular
order, but in generally the tall ones are in the back. Give each kid a word
of a message (going down the line), now the kids head out at the same speed
then hit a obstacle course. The taller ones more easily make it through and
pass up the shorter kids and get the the end first. The kids arrive out of
order, and not predictably.

Besides, the end of the light pulse (the former leading edge) I believe does
not travel at 300/c/.

That reminds me, there have been research going on about speeding up and
slowing down light. If I remember correctly the slowest was the speed of a
bicycle (15 mph or so) and at the fastest was (I think) 300+ times the speed
of light. Something like 60 feet in the time it takes ordinary light to go
2.4 inches. It involved priming a container of some gas and hitting it with
a beam of light. The leading edge of the beam contains all the information
about the beam (like a header file) that when absorbed by the gas the highly
charged gas recreates the beam on the other side of the container and emits
it at super velocities.

Unfortunately I haven't found any online article about these two endeavors.

That's what the EDC software is for. Give each kid a number as well as
a word, the assembler gets the short kids in front and the tall kids in
the rear, and the EDC (Error Detection and Correction) software puts the
numbers in a row.
