Naming Conventions [message #54790] Mo, 06 Juni 2005 08:41
Rubystars
Is there any site I can go to to find what naming conventions are for
various D&D dragon colors?

The metallics are sort of easy to remember, Au begins golden dragon names,
Ag begins silver dragon names, etc. It's usually the elemental shorthand.

I'm trying to come up with some names for dragon characters and I like these
naming conventions and would like to follow them but I can't remember how to
do it for chromatics or gem dragons or other types.

There used to be web sites galore that listed these just a couple of years
ago but I've googled and googled and I'm having trouble finding one now.

I don't even remember what the book is called that supposedly is the guide
to all this. I was planning to pick it up eventually.

Let em know if anyone knows these naming conventions, knows a web site where
I can read them for myself, or can help me remember the book title. Any of
these would be helpful. ^_^

I never noticed, really..... As far as I know, there aren't any naming
conventions, D&D dragons just assume a powerful sounding name to spread
fear without actually spreading fear.....

Thanks for responding!

I remember that red dragon names were supposed to start with Cr, (like
Cravincia, but that's all I can remember besides some of the metallics. See
I'd really like to be able to remember because I LIKED the naming system so
much. It's not so much something that I have to have right away, but I'd
like to, and I'm not currently playing any games but I am writing a story
where I'd like to make to make new dragon characters, but I'd like to find
out what these were again because I liked them a lot.

The metallic conventions I remember are Au for gold dragons, like Aunica, Ag
for silver dragons, like Agcerul, Cn' for bronze dragons, like Cn'ylnna.
If people follow the naming conventions it tells you a little about the
dragon simply by the name, which can of course be reinforced by the story
you write.

I'd like to be able to find a list with the rest but I just can't seem to
find one anymore. I should have saved them when I had the chance :(

If you're writing a story, write in your own naming conventions, or
don't use any at all.

I've never seen anything like this, but then, I've never really looked.
But if it is a Dungeons and Dragons naming convention, loot to the
Wizards of the Coast web boards (through http://www.wizards.com/) and
ask there, you might have better luck.

I don't think I've seen the book you mention (although that wouldn't be
surprising). However, I did happen to get a chance to look at the
Draconomicon recently (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?
x=products/dndacc/176680000), which would probably be the current
definitive guide to D&D dragons. In the back they have a list of
"sample" dragons, but the names don't seem to have any theme by color
like you describe.

The only pattern I saw was that the hatchlings--"wyrmlings"--tended to go
by short nicknames appropriate for the color, such as Rime for white,
Dazzle for blue, or Nimbus for silver. I didn't see any pattern by color
for the older dragons; as Flame Stryke mentioned, they all just seemed to
be longish, powerful-sounding names.

<chomp>

There's nothing preventing you from making up a naming convention...you
can start from what you remember and fill in the rest based on what
"sounds right" to you.
