Whee! I got a promotion at work! And the raise was enormous - 12%!
Only thing that scares me now is they're gonna expect more out of me,
and I'm putting in 100% already.

Well, you shouldn't accept a raise if you can't do the extra work required
for it. My dad refused raises to higher management positions because doing
so would take away too much of his free time. (He gets done with his work
rather early, and is paid for getting the work done, not being there. He's
actually VERY good at it. People ask him to fill in quite a bit when they
have too many problems in their districts.)

I can see what you're saying, but I think it's a bit of an
overgeneralisation.
Companies often expect too much of their employees these days, because
they're trying to minimise costs by keeping staffing levels down. It's
only right and proper to do a decent day's work for a day's pay, but
one shouldn't feel compelled to work oneself to death simply because a
company has deigned to recognise one's efforts by awarding a pay
increase.
Promotion can bring different responsibilities with it, and managers
are often expected to stay in the office till the work is done, rather
than clocking off at 5.30pm come what may. That's fair enough -- but
being asked to give more than 100 per cent, IMHO, isn't.

That's why I can see what you're saying. :) If the working conditions
that go along with a promotion aren't acceptable to a worker, he or she
has the right to turn it down, and shouldn't be penalised for doing so.
But a straight raise is a bit different from that.
