| And again with the research [message #3833] |

Ok. I've picked some quotes from my other post, and yet again have
some questions.
Arcaton posted that tannin, catnip, senokot, figs, and liquorice should
be tested for, but after looking through multiple herbal/medical
resources, I can't find anything that would warrant that. I know the
most popular use for some of those is as a laxative, but I don't make
the connection for why this could negatively alter job performance. Or
rather, alter it any more than any other medication for a health
problem would.
I think I meant my question to ask "what constitutes an *abused* drug
that should be tested for?" Something not taken in response to a
credible doctor's suggestion or order.
And another tidbit I'll also spark elsewhere. What do you think of the
decision that anyone working at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services is required to be a non-smoker? Lose the habit or lose the
job. Article here:
http://www.fedsmith.com/articles/articles.showarticle.db.php ?intArticleID=302
Should be "Smokers need not apply".
And again, if anyone knows a more appropriate place for this, please
tell me! Thanks.

Seroquel is a prescription medication. Should I be denied work because
I take it? The answer is no, so long as I take it at an appropriate
time. If I took it just before going to work, it would make me
increadibly drowsy, and therefore would affect my work performance
negatively. If I take it at night when I get home from work, however,
it doesn't negatively affect my work performance.
Smoking also causes a detrimental effect to work performance, as it
"calms" people by sedating them, thus they're not as alert as they need
to be.
Pot and such also negatively affect the mind, and as such should be
banned.
And you'll notice that it's only the smokers that seem to be resisting
the loudest about not being able to smoke. But non-smokers are
complaining about other aspects. How much time do I get for breaks as a
non-smoker? 15 minutes for a morning break, a half-hour lunch, and 15
minutes for an afternoon break, for a total of 1 hour in an 8 hour
shift. How much time does a smoker get for breaks? They get the same
hour as me, plus 5-minute smoke breaks every half hour for a total of 2
hours and 20 minutes break time. If I take 2 hours of break time, I get
dinged for an hour, but the smokers get paid for that extra hour of
break time? How is that fair?

See above. If you're smoking, you're not working. If you're working in
the medicair and medicaid industries, you're dealing with people on a
regular basis who may be deathly allergic to cigarette smoke or tobacco.
If I am so, should I either risk my life by getting the drugs I need or
by not getting the drugs I need? the answer is neither.
And, yes, I am very opinionated about this. I drive for a living, so I
need to be on top of everything in my job. So do those others who
drive. If they're smoking, they're concentrating on their cigartette
instead of the road in front and to the sides.

Well vitamins don't fall into that category of being prescribed by a Doctor,
although they can but most often aren't.... so should vitamins be considered
an abused drug? Or would those just be ignored, even though you can
overdose on certain vitamins...

I have seen where vitamins were prescribed by a doctor. It happened in
my room-mate's case. He kept feeling ill, lack of energy, sever
headaches, and so on. Missed a lot of work. After going to the doctor
and having numerous tests he was diagnosed as being malnourished. The
doctor prescribed a regimen of nutrients; a year later he's fit as a
fiddle!

But are vitamins a common thing to overdose on? I don't think you get
any sort of buzz or other desirable effect from ODing on those. Please

You can, in fact, overdose on vitamins. Most do nothing, but there are
a few that can be harmful if not fatal..... See
http://chemo.net/newpage35.htm as an example (first site on Google
searching for "vitamin overdose").

Yes, I know. But my point is, there isn't any desirable temporary
effect from doing so, as there is from, say, marijuana. No buzz, see?
If someone is overdosing on vits for the express purpose of getting the
harmful/fatal outcome, then their problem is not drug related, it's
more likely psychological, and not an issue for my narrowed paper. I
could probably do a reasonable job on psych problems in the workplace,
but that wasn't a topic option for me. Pity too, because I find those
of passing interest. Nothing I'd be willing to base a career on
though.

I'm sure there can be benefits from taking a larger dose than
recommended over a short term, which can become toxic in the long term.

Nope, found it in a book today. Vitamin A is the dangerous one and it

"Vitamins such as A, E and D are fat-soluble which means that excess
quantities above the recommended daily amount can accumulate in the
body. In effect, you could be overdosing on these vitamins by taking
several supplements a day."

But most generally, vitamins aren't prescribed by a dr... which would not
fall into the category previously specified... and yes, I do know that on
some instances vitamins can be prescribed, or strongly suggested, as in my
case, calcium, by a dr. But then, as was brought up in later posts...
there's really no benefits from popping excessive amounts of vitamins since
you don't get high from them...so probably shouldn't even be considered
something that needed to be tested for in a drug test... I wonder if
excessive protein in the urine would skew a drug test... nahhh... probably
not... probably not sugar either...

Actually, it would depend on the type of proteins the body is spilling.
Most drugs and such are proteins of a sort themselves, and certaiun
presences of bodily waste at certain quantities is considered
indicative of drug use.

On the subject of controlled substances and drug tests and the like:

If that is the case, then why can't a kidney specialist tell what kind of
protein is being spilled into the urine... (nope, not drugs) because it's a
high amount.. and has been for years now... now if it was a female, then
protein in the urine is very bad if they are pregnant, because it is an
indication that amniotic fluids may be leaking from the placenta and the
baby may be in danger.... but since it is a male, I don't think that's the
case...and I'm not going to suggest what type of protein I think it
is...although the kidney specialist laughed and said I might be quite
right... and he would eventually grow out of it... unfortunately, because
of it, he can't get health insurance, only high risk insurance which costs
more than he makes in a month!! Ah well.. one of these days he'll get a
full time job that has health insurance...

Because there are too many proteins in general. Any test would have to
be specific. For instance, in my case, I have a chronic kidney
condition that causes my kidneys to filter too much protein out of my
blood - it almost killed me. As a result a given test would produce
protein signatures all over the board. However, drug tests look for
certain quantities of specific signatures, leaving the rest uncounted.

Yes, but protein in any form in the urine is not a good thing....although
the kidney specialist told us that 99% of the time, it isn't a life
threatening issue... although it seems in your case you're in the 1%... but
then you may have also had other indications or side effects that aren't
present in my son.... so sorry to hear about your condition, I do hope
there is something you can take to help with it... I myself can't take
Ibuprofen due to a lodged kidney stone that left quite a bit of scar tissue
in my kidney (it was there for a good 20 years before it finally decided to
cause some problems, like getting lodged in the uretha, course the next 2
after that pretty much did the same thing... before finding out that my body
because it wasn't producing estrogen, was pulling calcium out of my body and
flushing it into my kidneys and making stones... so now besides the
estrogen, I drink decaffinated beverages, and take cranberry tablets...
knock on wood, it has helped, haven't had another stone in about 8 years or
so.. and they were getting expensive, let me tell you... )
As for the drug tests, I know there are plenty of medicines that will cause
an abnormal reading... but then we aren't talking about the prescribed
ones... laugh... we're talking about the illegal ones... of which I have no
experience with... other than in controlled settings, like a hospital, and
morphine has the unpleasant side effect of making the tip of your nose itch
like crazy!!
