Animal Planet's Dragons: Download [message #3742] Do, 24 März 2005 02:02

For those who care to download it, I've finally finished encoding it.
The resolution and quality aren't as high as I had hoped for, but oh
well. Sorry it took so long, several different circumstances beyond my
controll set the whole thing back 12 hours. I have yet to have a chance
to review the file personally, so if there are any audio sync errors or
anything, I appologise. To access it, go to
ftp://24.1.84.132/dragons_hi.avi the file is 505meg, so if anyone wants
a smaller version, or the file split into parts, just ask and I'll see
what I can do. I'm also putting it up on filedonkey if anyone would
rather download it that way.

I haven't seen the .avi above so I dunno it's quality. But there're
also another source here:

http://vel.ath.cx:6969/

It's a torrent server. File size is 700 MB.

You guys may want to go with that one, I've just reviewed my file, and
somehow, splicing out the commercials introduced up to a minute of
audio skewing. I don't know how that happened, it was fine before I
removed the commercials... And I really don't feel like taking the 6+
hours to try and fix it if someone else has already made another
version that's free of errors. Which is too bad, as this is one of the
few things I've bothered to mult-pass. I don't normally like to take
the extra 6 hours per hour of video for the improved quality when it's
just for my own personal use. *sigh* Well, when I get my claws on this
better version, if it is indeed better, I'll put it up on my FTP for
you guys, becasuse I know how lousy torrent is.

What was that rendered with? I dl'd it but my media player shows no

It's a DIVX codec.
I would recommend playing it with
http://www.divx.com/
free DL, nice and stable, I use it to play most all vid files and it
works well with my HDPC rig.

I just saw it last night. It wasn't the greatest of all the shows I've seen on
dragons. Still I thought it was entertaining enough. Got a few good laughs out
of some of their theories. Looked to me like a documentary on how they're making
an upcoming documentary. Some parts made sence while others were just too funny
not to laugh.

Wheee! Thanks for sharing. =D

I see that you cropped the black borders, not perferctly, but still, it
helps alot. The black borders generate way too much noise, especialy where
the picture meets the border, which waste bandwidth. I see that you didn't
include any key frames at all. Why? It greatly increases the sharpness at
scene change. And key frames have a good performance increase when it comes
in video editing or to navigate through the video when playing. And did you
use a noise filter? Even if it look clears, analogic sources always have
noise. You probably taped this analogic channel on VHS. When multimedia data
passes 2 analogic pipeline, you sure to find noise. Noisier the source, more
bandwidth it consumes.

Okay, hope it will helps you in the wonderfull word of video editing and
encoding. :)

Ok, for the record, AP_Dragons.avi is NOT my version. I don't know what
they did, how, or why. My version, to start, had a poor source, it was
recorded by a friend on an old VCR. I did everything in my power to
clean it up, and I think I did well, considering. However, as I
previously stated, there was some inexplicable audio skewing that
resulted from splicing out the comercials. I would have gone back and
fixed everything, but this other version already existed, so I didn't
see the point. I already knew all the stuff you mentioned, but, to be
honest, I did not use a noise filter. I normally do, but because of
problems with my computer, I had to do the initial encoding on a
friend's computer. The fastest I had access to was a 766mhz Celeron,
not exactly the best thing out there for encoding. I had to do several
things differently, just to be able to get 512x384 resolution. Not only
did I have to reduce the frame rate, but I had to remove almost all the
preprocessing from the inital encoding. And, really, at this point,
this is all moot. If you want to know why whoever made that other
version did what they did, you'll have to track them down and ask them.
And, to be fair, I think they recorded it off an HD source, considering
the resolution they have.

I had a friend save it off his new media-capable Windows XP computer; it
was +6 Gb of Windows Media Player video (WMV) in raw hi-fi[1]. I wish he
were clueful enough to learn to re-encode stuff[2]. While I may posses a
commercial-class 'net connection, he does not. His connection shut off
(bandwidth limited at the ISP) after about 2.5Gb. I got about 10 mintues
of Dragons and 25 mintues of commercials out of it.

Without a decent portable HD to be had, your site is probably the most
effective way to get the video (short of paying for a VHS of it +
commercials from the publisher.) Even at 700mb, many appreciate your
commitment to share this with those less fortunate in that ephemirial
quanitiy that is time.

Thanks and thanks again,

WaveClaw

Well, nomatter who made that version, thank you very much for posting
it!

My best friend had seen the show and kept telling me how much I would
like it, but then I saw the other thread here about how that
documentary wasn't very good. Next I looked at the pictures on the
Animal Planet site and wasn't particularly impressed, but I really
enjoyed the actual show! (even though it took 4 hours to download...)
I especially love how it was left open at the end. I noticed people in
the other thread commenting on the lack of variety, but the way it
ended implied that there could be several other types of dragons...
maybe some still in existance.
It's a fun idea, anyway, and just one of many possibilities.

I know that in some way I am a dragon, but I have no physical dragon
form, obviously. This means the most likely options are either my
'spirit form' being that of a dragon, like a totem animal or something;
or the popular past life idea. Because of this, I'm very open to any
theories about the physical existance of dragons in this world.
Improbable but never impossible, right?

Nothing's impossible, you are correct. And not really all that
improbable, really..... After all, "the surest sign that there is
intelligent life [in space] is that they haven't tried to contact us",
so who's to say that intelligent life doesn't do the same on this
planet.....

Just wondering - has anybody seen the DVD release? I got it and it's
far and superior to what was released on Animal Planet.

There was extra that was cut out, yes. Also, this was due to the story
of it. In the dvd they follow the original story set forth of a
palentologist effectively exiled for postulating dragons, who is sent
to investigate a strange find and take the fall if things go bad. It's
his voice doing the narrative rather than Patrick Stewart's, the score
is definately different (more upbeat), and a couple scenes that simply
changing the narration couldn't account for had been taken out for the
TV version. It's very much the different story - and from an AFD
perspective I think a better one.

I saw it and in a Walmart a few weeks ago and grabbed it instantly. If
there's a Walmart near you, it's probably available there. It's also
available through Amazon. The title is, "Dragon's World: A Fantasy
Made Real." I used the keywords "dragons" and "fantasy."

Thanks Scott!

BTW PlayUSA say it's an RCE title so it might be a problem with some
