| New reader, question about groups [message #52208] |
Mi, 01 Juni 2005 18:45 |
|
Greetings,
I'm a new reader of this newsgroup, although not new to the LOTR books...
My question is: what's the basic difference between the two newsgroups I
see on the subject:
alt.fan.tolkien
rec.arts.books.tolkien
I've crossposted this to both groups, but just wondered which group is
"better" to follow. Would it be best to read both groups? I see
many/most of the messages are posted to both places. Thanks for info.

alt.fan.tolkien may to a degree be compared to a pub where Tolkien fans
hang out to talk about whatever catches their fancy, while
rec.arts.books.tolkien may to a degree be likened to a scholarly forum where
Tolkien fans meet to discuss Tolkien. Thus, there tends to be rather more
non-Tolkien (off-topic) posts on aft than on rabt, while some
Tolkien-related material is posted only on rabt.
Personally I prefer to limit off-topic posts of mine to aft, while
cross-posting on-topic posts to both groups. But this is only my custom,
not a consensus that all accept and adhere to. Still, if you wish to
discuss only Tolkien and have no interest in political debate (or ditto
flame wars) or in social chit-chat, you may prefer to stick to
rec.arts.books.tolkien.
Of course some posters may use servers that carry only one of the two
newsgroups.

Thanks very much for the info, which makes perfect sense. I look forward
to lurking/participating here. Appreciate it!

Thank you for the compliment! :) (I assume that you've found your way
to the main "Meta-FAQ" page by now, and hopefully the information
about the newsgroups and about netiquette in general didn't come
across as overly stuffy.)
Steuard Jensen
P.S. To the group: I haven't been very active here recently, mostly
because I've been trying to finish a physics paper (it's almost,
almost there). But for the record, I'll be even less active for the
next two or three weeks, as I'm going to be out of town on and off.
My automated FAQ and FAQ-pointer posting script will boldly carry on
in my absence. :)

That's a great comparison! But does it mean I have to
pop open a brewski every time I visit AFT? (Hint: it's
OK to say YES!).

I guess he never had a cold one either, only a
room-temperature one...

I guess that you have never experienced British 'room temperature'.
The beer is certainly cold enough.

What you want to do is what you have to do, in this context. Just take
care that you don't overdo it. Some seem unable to hold their liquor on the
NGs. We see the occasional splashes of sick, don't we?

It /isn't/ "room temperature", it's cellar temperature.

You're not posting from Google Groups, so you know that these are old
articles you're responding to.

Morgoth's Curse is just behind with reading the newsgroup. Can't your
newsreader filter posts according to the date of the post being replied
to? Surely that is a standard feature now? ;-)

You would know the date in Google Groups as well. It is just that Google
Groups used to have a limit on replying to old posts, then lost it, then
regained it (after much protest), and after that I don't know any more.

A year and a half behind? Some of those he replied to were from
spring 2004!

So you're suggesting that I should filter on the _interior_ date, but
he shouldn't filter on the _exterior_ date.
