It's the new scene on Vogsphere with the flyswatters and it's hilarious, go
check it out here:

http://movies.channel.aol.com/franchise/firstlook.adp

It's available in QuickTime and AOL format both with Dial-Up and Broadband.
Enjoy. It's funny as hell.

Ups:
- I like the Marvin costume. It works quite well, I think.
- Mos Def is definately not playing a smart-ass black dude
- ... uhm ... I'm out of ups!

Downs:
- This is absolutely not Hitchhiker's humour as I perceive it. I have to
go along with Simo on this one and say that this is slapstick without
any real humour in it. If it had had some clever spoken passages it
might have been funny, but it doesn't.
- That hat Zaphod is wearing is stupid - Zaphod may have been deemed the
worst sentient dresser, but he always tried to look cool! Is that hat
cool? No way!
- Marvin's voice worked quite well on the website, but the single
comment here sound exactly like dthe worst reviews I have seen said.
It's not depressed. It's purely abusive.
- Arthur being asked for a plan to rescue Trillian and actually having
one? That's not exactly how I perceive the relationship between
Arthur, Ford and Zaphod.
- There wasn't one single funny line in all this, the way I see it.

I had actually lived up a little after Sean D Sollé's posting. Now it
seems I am going to agree with Simo. Oh dear me, oh dear me! I do hope
it goes uphill from here!

"Ah," said Arthur, "abuse."

"Yes," confirmed Marvin.

Thanks for this - I really enjoyed it.

Arthur seems to actually be contributing to the story, rather than
spending most of the time in the background watching the story happen,
which I think is a positive change.

The character of Ford seems to have been nicely nailed.

Zaphod's line - "Zarquon! What was that?" is just absolutely perfect.

Marvin comes across as having just the right amount of depression and
contempt for others.

And there's nothing wrong with a bit of slapstick humour - it worked for
me in Shaun of The Dead anyway, and it works for me in this scene.

All in all, to me it has the look and feel of hitchhikers, which is what
I'm looking for in this film much more than a religious reproduction of
every detail. Looking forward to seeing more.

Some people will get mad at me for this, but if Arthur Dent were ever going
to be a movie hero, he had to be someone who contributed to the story. He
had to actually eventually adapt to life in space, which he did even in the
last three or so books. Because fans like us would enjoy him just being how
he always is, but regular movie goers simply would not stand for it because
they wouldn't understand why the hell they're watching him.

> The character of Ford seems to have been nicely nailed.

Kaare said there was no HHGG-esque lines in that scene, but I direct you to
Ford's line, "I checked the Guide for the best way to rescue a prisoner from
Vogsphere - it said don't." Ford seems, from the trailers, to be more
affectionate, but most of the time he's pretty stone faced and at that
point, Mos has a pretty nice stone faced look to him.

> Zaphod's line - "Zarquon! What was that?" is just absolutely perfect.

I was always so taken with Sam Rockwell that after he was announced, I'd
thrown out anybody else I'd wanted to play the part.

> Marvin comes across as having just the right amount of depression and

I think so too. I always thought Alan Rickman had a terrific voice to play a
robot and to some people he sounded too abusive, but to me he nailed it.

You know, some folks at the old TDV said this scene was written by Douglas
five years ago on the plane back to London and he bounced into their office
so he could print out pages and read it to him - I figure if the master
himself scripted it and they left it in, what harm's been done?

I'd also point out that Ford uses his towel as a weapon to trap the
face-slapping thing - which to me is as good as any HHGG-esque line!

I know Marvin had lines like that. The point is not the lines. It's the
voice. I'm not discussing the lines. The voice of Marvin should be
depressed. It didn't sound depressed to me. But it was a minor point.

>>- There wasn't one single funny line in all this, the way I see it.

Please point me to a funny line in the bit. There is lot's of slapstick
effect, but all the dialogue seemed to miss the humour that always made
me love Douglas Adams' work.

For instance, Ford's line "Nobody think..." etc. just begs for making
some remark worthy of Douglas Adams, but it never comes.

I just looked at the clip again, and realised, that if you removed
Zaphod's stupid hat he looks okay. Especially when he rasies his arm to
speak, that's truly Zaphod (except for the missing head, of course).
That was at least one more plus-thing.

Admittedly, Marvin's voice was a little better than I remembered it. I
guess I will have to let go of Stephen Moore :-)

At this point I have to agree with Simo, that anything made by DNA
himself is not great by default. Also, who knows what lines accompanied
the original scene? Anything may have changed.

Okay, that is an okay variation on the old "What to do if yuou want ot
get a lift from a Vogon"-entry, although it didn't seem very well
delivered, I have to admit it's there.

Now, there I have to agree. I can't believe I forgot to mention that on

'fraid I'm going to have to side with Kaare on this one (I can't do the
squiggly "a" thingy), I thought it looked very disapointing. The fan boy
in me is screaming to actually like it but I didn't find the scene
funny. And sadly this seems to be the scene they're promoting most!

I think this sort of thing is going to cause much debate over the film -
because DNA isn't here any more, people are going to automatically
assume that anything "bad" in the film *must* be something that was
changed from DNA's version, and anything "good" is something of his that
was left in. Without seeing every iteration of the script, we'll never
know whether or not half the stuff that sucks was just Douglas having a
bad day...

Because they were trying to avoid getting hit by those things again, hence

I always felt that way. Kare, I don't know where you'll find it in your
country, but I suggest you rent "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" to see the
great Sam in action, wherein he gives a truly Beeblebroxian perfromance.
Even MJ said so (of course this was before he saw the film, but I digress).

Yeah, it's painful, isn't it? It was hard for me too, but I'd always wanted
Rickman in the movie somehow, and I was a tad bit disappointed that Stephen
wasn't Marvin - but Alan Rickman is one of the greatest living actors alive
today and I'd always hoped he'd be in the movie somehow (in fact, if John
Malkovich hadn't been cast, Humma Kavula sounds like a role he could have
played pretty well) and I thought the moment he was announced that he had a
perfect voice for a robot. Of course not everybody's going to feel that way
and I can't change their minds.

Oh, well. I guess I'll just sit in a corner and rust :-)
