bisexual and transgender fans of SF, fantasy and horror.
The awards honor works that deal positively with gay characters,
themes and issues.
The Gaylactic Spectrum Awards Foundation was created in 2002 to
manage and further the mission of the awards to educate and raise
awareness of such content in SF&F. Awards were presented in three
categories for works originally released in 2003.
The 2004 Gaylactic Spectrum Awards were presented at the World
Science Fiction Convention in Boston on Sept. 5. A list of winners follows.

Homosexual Urban Legends -- The Series...
Homosexuals claim that "heterosexuals" molest most children but statistics
show that homosexuals molest at far higher rates than do heterosexuals.
Rev. Paul Shanley, a retired Catholic priest was arrested on May 4, 2002 in
San Diego on three counts of child rape. Shanley had a history of molesting
boys that went back to 1967. He was at the founding meeting of the North
American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) and while in San Diego
operated a bed & breakfast for homosexuals in Palm Springs. Shanley
has openly called for "man-boy" love.
David Carlton Nurmi, was arrested in Florida on April 26, 2002, for
possession of child pornography and for molesting a 15-year-old boy.
Geoffrey Cornish, a well-respected Solana Beach, California therapist was
sentenced to 23 years in prison in September, 2001 for sexually molesting
boys who came to him for therapy. Cornish, who is HIV-positive, was also a
coach for the Torrey Pines High School surf team. Cornish told police he had
been molested himself by a Boy Scout leader for three years when he was
living in England.
James Edward Sanders, a homosexual child molester, was arrested in New
Mexico in December, 2001 for sexually abusing a 7-year-old boy. Police also
discovered child pornography in Sanders' home.
Christopher Reardon, a homosexual, former youth minister, and Boy Scout
leader was sentenced to 40-50 years in prison in the Summer of 2001 for
raping, molesting, and disseminating pornography to 29 boys under his care.
These are only a few of the homosexual child molestation cases to hit the
news during 2001-02. Virtually every week, newspapers detail more cases
involving homosexuals who have sexually assaulted children under their care.
New York Post Exposes High Rate Of Teacher/Student Molestations
In a story not widely publicized in the mainstream press, the New York Post
published a story in its July 30, 2001 edition about the secret epidemic of
homosexual child abuse cases that go unreported in New York City's public
schools.
The report, "Secret Shame Of Our Schools: Sexual Abuse Of Students Runs
Rampant," by Douglas Montero, is the result of an analysis of 117 cases of
sexual abuse between January 1999 and June 2001. Sixty percent of those
accused of sexual abuse were transferred to desk jobs inside the school
district. Forty percent of those transferred suspects were repeat sex
offenders.
The report noted that out of the 117 cases, 212 children were victims. In
45% of the cases, the sex offender attacked more than one student. In nearly
16% of the cases, school officials delayed or tried to cover up the sexual
molestations. The average victim is a 15-year-old girl and 75% of the
victims were girls. According to the report, "Nearly 20 percent of the
offenders are homosexuals and in most of these cases, the attack led to a
sexual relationship with the stu- dent." The report also discovered that the
Board of Education investigated another 347 substantiated sex abuse cases
between January 2000 and July 20, 2001. Adding the 117 cases with the 327,
it appears that at least one child is sexually abused each day by a school
employee-and 20% of these molestations against children are done by
homosexuals!
Homosexuals Molest Children At A Far Higher Rate Than Heterosexuals
Homosexuals account for only 1-2% of our population based on current
surveys. The National Opinion Research Center in 1992 found that 2.8% of men
and 1.4% of women identified themselves as "homosexual" or "bisexual. A 1995
survey of 18-49-year-old men published by the Journal of Sex Research
indicated that 2.6% of them had engaged in homosexual sex within the prior
12 months; 4% had had homosexual sex within the past five years. In other
words, at least 98-99% of our population is heterosexual in orientation.
Homosexual activists routinely claim that most child molesters are
"heterosexual" males, thus shifting the focus away from their own very high
rates of molestation. Since 98-99% of the population is heterosexual, it is
technically correct to say that most molestations are done by heterosexuals.
However, statistics indicate that homosexuals pose a far more serious threat
to children than do heterosexuals.
For example: In 1987, Dr. Stephen Rubin of Whitman College conducted a
ten-state study of sex abuse cases involving school teachers. He studied 199
cases. Of those, 122 male teachers had molested girls, while 14 female
teachers had molested boys. He also discovered that 59 homosexual male
teachers had molested boys and four female homosexual teachers had molested
girls. In other words, 32 percent of those child molestation cases involved
homosexuals. Nearly a third of these cases come from only 1-2% of the
population.
Dr. Judith Reisman, in her book, Kinsey, Crimes & Consequences, describes
the research done by Dr. Gene Abel. This researcher compared the molestation
rates of self-confessed homosexual and heterosexual child molesters. In a
sample of 153 homosexual molesters, they confessed to a total of 22,981
molestations. This is equivalent to 150 children per molester. Self-admitted
heterosexual molesters admitted to 4,435 molestations. This comes to 19.8
victims per molester. Dr. Abel concluded that homosexuals "sexually molest
young boys at an incidence that is occurring from five times greater than
the molestation of girls."
This high rate of molestations by homosexuals is consistent with other
studies conducted during the past several decades. Here are just a few
studies that show homosexuals molesting children at epidemic rates:
The Los Angeles Times conducted a survey in 1985 of 2,628 adults across the
U.S. Of those, 27% of the women and 16% of the men had been sexually
molested. Seven percent of the girls and 93% of the men had been molested by
adults of the same sex. This means that 40% of child molestations were by
homosexuals. (Los Angeles Times, August 25-6, 1985)
In 1984, a Vermont survey of 161 adolescents who were sex offenders found
that 35 of them were homosexuals (22%). (Wasserman, J., "Adolescent Sex
Offenders-Vermont, 1984" Journal American Medical Association, 1986;
255:181-2)
In 1991, of the 100 child molesters at the Massachusetts Treatment Center
for Sexually Dangerous Persons, a third were heterosexual, a third were
bisexual, and a third were homosexual. (Dr. Raymond Knight, "Differential
Prevalence of Personality Disorders in Rapists and Child Molesters," Eastern
Psychological Association Conference, New York, April 12, 1991)
Drs. Freund and Heasman of the Clark Institute of Psychiatry in Toronto
reviewed two studies on child molesters and calculated that 34% and 32% of
the sex offenders were homosexual. In cases these doctors had handled, 36%
of the molesters were homosexuals. (Freund, K. "Pedophilia and
Heterosexuality vs. Homosexuality," Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, 1984;
10:193-200)
From these studies and many more, it is evident that homosexuals molest
children at a far greater rate than do their heterosexual counterparts.
While they comprise only 1-2% of the population, they are responsible for
upwards of a third or more of all sexual molestations of children.
Exposing The Homosexual/Pedophile Link
Homosexuals seldom openly admit that they want to sexually assault children,
but their literature and their actions tell another story. In the January
1-8, 2001 issue of The Weekly Standard, author Mary Eberstadt exposed the
clear link between homosexual activism and the growing North-American Man-
Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) movement. Writing in "'Pedophilia Chic'
Reconsidered: The taboo against sex with children continues to erode,"
Eberstadt notes:
The reason why the public is being urged to reconsider boy pedophilia is
that this 'question,' settled though it may be in the opinions and laws of
the rest of the country, is demonstrably not yet settled within certain
parts of the gay rights movement. The more that movement has entered the
mainstream, the more this 'question' has bubbled forth from that previously
distant realm in the public square.
Eberstadt notes that the book, Male Inter-Generational Intimacy: Historical,
Socio-Psychological, and Legal Perspectives edited by pedophile Edward
Brongersma is currently available in the "gay/lesbian" sections of
bookstores like Borders. This book, which openly promotes pedophilia, was
first published in the Journal of Homosexuality in 1990. The Journal is
edited by John DeCecco, a psychologist at San Francisco State University.
DeCecco is a board member of the Dutch pedophile journal, Paidika.
The homosexual magazine Guide published a pro-pedophile editorial in its
July, 1995 issue. In referring to pedophiles as "prophets" of sexual
freedom, the Guide editorialist wrote: "We must listen to our prophets.
Instead of fearing being labeled pedophiles, we must proudly proclaim that
sex is good, including children's sexuality. . . . Surrounded by pious
moralists with deadening anti-sexual rules, we must be shameless
rulebreakers, demonstrating our allegiance to a higher concept of love. We
must do it for the children's sake."
Parents are correct to be concerned about homosexuals sexually assaulting
their children. The Boy Scouts of America, for example, is right to prohibit
homosexuals from membership or leadership positions. It is evident from the
statistical evidence and news reports of child molestation cases, that
homosexuals pose a clear and present danger to children. Our laws and social
policies should protect children, not cater to the whims and sexual desires
of sexual predators. We must oppose homosexual activism "for the children's
sake."

One of the reasons the Hollywood Homosexuals behind
Battlestar Galactica are pushing Sodomy symbolisms
in BSG is because they would desperately like to
reverse some of the following results which they
encountered in all 11 states in the US on November 3
2004 (US election day) which had Ballot Questions
(plebiscital votes by voters in a state controlling
their own state's laws) on the Homosexual Marriage
agenda. So if you are watching your favorite science
fiction show and then you notice something in the
script which does not make sense, it may be that it
was time for Word From BSG's Sponsor, the
Hollywood Homosexuals who are using the script as
their advertisement vehicle.
Homosexuals have had control of Hollywood since
around 1992, when Clinton (and Jerry Brown) ran for
President the first time. Even though they have been
pushing their agenda hard for all these years, they
are yet to win a single statewide vote. Clinton took
homosexual money in 1992 and as soon as he was
inaugurated started to implement policies that he
was bought and paid to implement -- Gays In The
Military, in 1993. This was an intense unpopular
policy initiative, shocked the public, and resulted
in the Democrats losing both Houses of Congress in
1994, and started a series of investigations into
Clinton's personal life, resulting finally in his
Impeachment in 1998. John Kerry (Democrat 2004
Presidential Candidate) again took homosexual money
in the 2004 election year. Democrats do not have
many sources of money, representing the poorer
segments of society. Since Kerry was from the state
of Massachusetts, a state which earlier in 2004
legalized Homosexual Marriage through a corrupt
bribed out Judges judicial decision (not a vote by
its legislature) the onus was on John Kerry to
separate himself from this suicidal issue in a very
very public manner.
However, because Kerry took Hollywood Homosexual
money in the 2004 year and before, he simply was not
able to do that. Thus in a year when Kerry was
running for President against George W. Bush, who
had a terrible record, who had had the Economy
collapse early in his first year (2001) and it
stayed that way till mid 2004, who also failed to
prevent the 9-11 Attacks on the World Trade Center
in 2001, who lied to drag the US into a war against
Iraq, when his allegations that Iraq had Weapons Of
Mass Destruction were false and various other
failures, Kerry still could not win because of the
Homosexual agenda balla and chain around his neck.
Kerry should have won this race 55%-45% if he was
not carrying this Homosexual agenda ball and chain.
And the following votes are an in indication of how
strongly people felt against this homosexual agenda
Kerry was pushing.
Several of these 11 states were Swing States -- they
were close in the previous election and would decide
the election in 2004. Many people went to vote
against the Homosexual Agenda, and voted against
Kerry as an afterthought.
Now Hollywood Homosexuals are wealthy fatcats and,
despite popular misconceptions, are overwhelming
Republican. They do not want Democrats like John
Kerry to win and then raise their taxes. Thus, there
may well be a scam going on here, to buy the
Democrat candidate each year and ask him to support
something the US public despises -- this time it was
Homosexual Marriage. If this buying every 4 years
of the Democrat candidate by Hollywood Homosexual
fatcats continues, it could be an extremely long
time before the Democrats ever come close to taking
back any of the branches of government again.

jurisdiction. The courts of this state shall have no
jurisdiction to grant a divorce or separate
maintenance with respect to any such relationship or

to 23%.
Kentucky Only a marriage between one man and one
woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in
Kentucky. A legal status identical or substantially
similar to that of marriage for unmarried
individuals shall not be valid or recognized.Result:
Passed: 75% to 25%.
Michigan The measure amends the state constitution
to include the following statement: To secure and
preserve the benefits of marriage for our society
and for future generations of children, the union of
one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only
agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union
for any purpose.Result: Passed: 59% to 41%.
Mississippi The measure amends the state
constitution to read: Marriage may take place and
may be valid under the laws of this state only
between a man and a woman. A marriage in another
state or foreign jurisdiction between persons of the
same gender, regardless of when the marriage took
place, may not be recognized in this state and is
void and unenforceable under the laws of this
state.Result: Passed: 86% to 14%.
Montana The measure amends the state constitution to
read: Only a marriage between one man and one woman
shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this
state.Result: Passed: 66% to 34%.
North Dakota The measure amends the state
constitution to include the following statement:
Marriage consists only of the legal union between a
man and a woman. No other domestic union, however
denominated, may be recognized as a marriage or

Ohio The measure amends the state constitution to
include the following statement: Only a union

Most of us fail to understand why anyone would want to
engage in homosexual activity. To the average person, the
very idea is either puzzling or repugnant. Indeed, a
recent survey (1) indicated that only 14% of men and 10%
of women imagined that such behavior could hold any
"possibility of enjoyment."
The peculiar nature of homosexual desire has led some
people to conclude that this urge must be innate: that a
certain number of people are "born that way," that sexual
preferences cannot be changed or even ended. What does
the best research really indicate? Are homosexual
proclivities natural or irresistible?
At least three answers seem possible. The first, the
answer of tradition, is as follows: homosexual behavior
is a bad habit that people fall into because they are
sexually permissive and experimental. This view holds rat
homosexuals choose their lifestyle as the result of self-
indulgence and an unwillingness to play by society rules.
The second position is held by a number of psychoanalysts
(e.g., Bieber, Socarides). According to them, homosexual
behavior is a mental illness, symptomatic of arrested
development. They believe that homosexuals have unnatural
or perverse desires as a consequence of poor familial
relations in childhood or some other trauma. The third
view is "biological" and holds that such desires are
genetic or hormonal in origin, and that there is no
choice involved and no "childhood trauma" necessary.
Which of these views is most consistent with the facts?
Which tells us the most about homosexual behavior and its
origins? The answer seems to be that homosexual behavior
is learned. The following seven lines of evidence support
such a conclusion.
1) No researcher has found provable biological or genitic
differences between heterosexuals and homosexuals that
weren't caused by their behavior
Occasionally you may read about a scientific study that
suggests that homosexuality is an inherited tendency, but
such studies have usually been discounted after careful
scrutiny or attempts at replication. No one has found a
single heredible genetic, hormonal or physical difference
between heterosexuals and homosexuals - at least none
that is replicable. (9, 12) While the absence of such a
discovery doesn't prove at inherited sexual tendencies
aren't possible, it suggests that none has been found
because none exists.
2) People tend to believe that their sexual desires and
behaviors are learned
Two large studies asked homosexual respondents to explain
the origins of their desires and behaviors - how they
"got that way." The first of these studies was conducted
by Kinsey in the 1940s and involved 1700 homosexuals. The
second, in 1970, (4) involved 979 homosexuals. Both were
conducted prior to the period when the "gay rights"
movement started to politicize the issue of homosexual
origins. Both reported essentially the same findings:
Homosexuals overwhelmingly believed their feelings and
behavior were the result of social or environmental
influences. In a 1983 study conducted by the Family
Research Institute (5) (FRI) involving a random sample of
147 homosexuals, 35% said their sexual desires were
hereditary. Interestingly, almost 80% of the 3,400
heterosexuals in the same study said that their
preferences and behavior were learned (see Table 1
below). Table 1 Reasons For Preferring: homosexuality

lot - 39% society teaches heterosexuality and I responded
- 34% born that way - 22% my parents, marriage was so
good I wanted to have what they had - 21% I tried it and
liked it - 12% childhood heterosexual experiences with
peers it was the ''in thing" in my crowd - 9% I was
seduced by a heterosexual adult - 5% While these results
aren't conclusive, they tell something about the very
recent tendency to believe that homosexual behavior is
inherited or biologic. From the 1930s (when Kinsey
started collecting data) to the early 1970s, before a
"politically correct" answer emerged, only about 10% of
homosexuals claimed they were "born that way."
Heterosexuals apparently continue to believe that their
behavior is primarily a result of social conditioning.
3) Older homosexuals often approach the young
There is evidence that homosexuality, like drug use is
"handed down" from older individuals. The first
homosexual encounter is usually initiated by an older
person. In separate studies 60%, (6) 64%, (3) and 61%
(10) of the respondents claimed that their first partner
was someone older who initiated the sexual experience.
How this happens is suggested by a nationwide random
study from Britain: (17) 35% of boys and 9% of girl said
they were approached for sex by adult homosexuals.
Whether for attention, curiosity, or by force, 2% of the
boys and 1% of the girls succumbed. In the US, (1) 37% of
males and 9% of females reported having been approached
for homosexual sex (65% of those doing the inviting were
older). Likewise, a study of over 400 London teenagers
reported that "for the boys, their first homosexual
experience was very likely with someone older: half the
boys' first partner were 20 or older; for girls it was 43
percent." (13) A quarter of homosexuals have admitted to
sex with children and underaged teens, (6,5,8) suggesting
the homosexuality is introduced to youngsters the same
way other behaviors are learned - by experience.
4) Early homosexual experiences influence adult patterns
of behavior
In the 1980s, scholars (12) examined the early Kinsey
data to determine whether or not childhood sexual
experiences predicted adult behavior. The results were
significant: Homosexual experience in the early year,
particularly if it was one's first sexual experience -
was a strong predictor of adult homosexual behavior, both
for males and females. A similar pattern appeared in the
1970 Kinsey Institute (4) study: there was a strong
relationship between those whose first experience was
homosexual and those who practiced homosexuality in later
life. In the FRI study (5) two-thirds of the boys whose
first experience was homosexual engaged in homosexual
behavior as adults; 95% of those whose first experience
was heterosexual were likewise heterosexual in their
adult behavior. A similarly progressive pattern of sexual
behavior was reported for females. It is remarkable that
the three largest empirical studies of the question
showed essentially the same pattern. A child's first
sexual experiences were strongly associated with his or
her adult behavior.
5) Sexual conduct is influenced by cultural factors -
especially religious convictions
Kinsey reported "less homosexual activity among devout
groups whether they be Protestant, Catholic, or Jewish,
and more homosexual activity among religiously less
active groups." (2) The 1983 FRI study found those raised
in irreligious homes to be over 4 times more likely to
become homosexual than those from devout homes . These
studies suggest that when people believe strongly that
homosexual behavior is immoral, they are significantly
less apt to be involved in such activity. Recently,
because of the AIDS epidemic, it has been discovered
that, relative to white males, twice as many black males
are homosexual (14) and 4 times as many are bisexual.
Perhaps it is related to the fact that 62% of black
versus 17% of white children are being raised in
fatherless homes. But even the worst racist wouldn't
suggest that it is due to genetic predisposition. Were
homosexual impulses truly inherited, we should be unable
to find differences in homosexual practice due to
religious upbringing or racial sub-culture.
6) Many change their sexual preferences
In a large random sample (5) 88% of women currently
claiming lesbian attraction and 73% of men claiming to
currently enjoy homosexual sex, said that they had been
sexually aroused by the opposite sex, 85% of these
"lesbians" and 54% of these "homosexuals" reported sexual
relations with someone of the opposite sex in adulthood,
67% of lesbians and 54% of homosexuals reported current
sexual attraction to the opposite sex, and 82% of
lesbians and 66% of homosexuals reported having been in
love with a member of the opposite sex. Homosexuals
experiment. They feel some normal impulses. Most have
been sexually aroused by, had sexual relations with, and
even fallen in love with someone of the opposite sex.
Nationwide random samples (11) of 904 men were asked
about their sex lives since age 21, and more
specifically, in the last year. As the figure reveals,
1.3% reported sex with men in the past year and 5.2% at
some time in adulthood. Less than 1% of men had only had
sex with men during their lives. And 6 of every 7 who had
had sex with men, also reported sex with women. It's a
much different story with inherited characteristics. Race
and gender are not optional lifestyles. They remain
immutable. The switching and experimentation demonstrated
in these two studies identifies homosexuality as a
preference, not an inevitability.
7) There are many ex-homosexuals
Many engage in one or two homosexual experiences and
never do it again- a pattern reported for a third of the
males with homosexual experience in one study. (1) And
then there are ex- homosexuals - those who have continued
in homosexual liaisons for a number of years and then
chose to change not only their habits, but also the
object of their desire. Sometimes this alteration occurs
as the result of psychotherapy; (10) in others it is
prompted by a religious or spiritual conversion. (18)
Similar to the kinds of "cures" achieved by drug addicts
and alcoholics, these treatments do not always remove
homosexual desire or temptation. Whatever the mechanism,
in a 1984 study (5) almost 2% of heterosexuals reported
that at one time they considered themselves to be
homosexual. It is clear that a substantial number of
people are reconsidering their sexual preferences at any
given time.
What causes homosexual desire?
If homosexual impulses are not inherited, what kinds of
influences do cause strong homosexual desires? No one
answer is acceptable to all researchers in the field.
Important factors, however, seem to fall into four
categories. As with so many other odd sexual
proclivities, males appear especially susceptible: 1.
Homosexual experience:
any homosexual experience in childhood, especially if it
is a first sexual experience or with an adult any
homosexual contact with an adult, particularly with a
relative or authority figure (in a random survey, 5% of
adult homosexuals vs 0.8% of heterosexuals reported
childhood sexual involvements with elementary or
secondary school teachers (5). 2. Family abnormality,
including the following:
a dominant, possessive, or rejecting mother an absent,
distant, or rejecting father a parent with homosexual
proclivities, particularly one who molests a child of the
same sex a sibling with homosexual tendencies,
particularly one who molests a brother or sister the lack
of a religious home environment divorce, which often
leads to sexual problems for both the children and the
adults parents who model unconventional sex roles
condoning homosexuality as a legitimate lifestyle-
welcoming homosexuals (e.g., co-workers, friends) into
the family circle 3. Unusual sexual experience,
particularly in early childhood:
precocious or excessive masturbation exposure to
pornography in childhood depersonalized sex (e.g., group
sex, sex with animals) or girls, sexual interaction with
adult males 4. Cultural influences: a visible and
socially approved homosexual sub-culture that invites
curiosity and encourages exploration pro-homosexual sex
education openly homosexual authority figures, such as
teachers (4% of Kinsey's and 4% of FRI's gays reported
that their first homosexual experience was with a
teacher) societal and legal toleration of homosexual acts
depictions of homosexuality as normal and/or desirable
behavior
Can homosexuality be changed?
Certainly. As noted above, many people have turned away
from homosexuality - almost as many people call
themselves "gay." Clearly the easier problem to eliminate
is homosexual behavior. Just as many heterosexuals
control their desires to engage in premarital or
extramarital sex, so some with homosexual desires
discipline themselves to abstain from homosexual contact.
One thing seems to stand out: Associations are all-
important. Anyone who wants to abstain from homosexual
behavior should avoid the company of practicing
homosexuals. There are organizations including "ex-gay
ministries, " (18) designed to help those who wish to
reform their conduct. Psychotherapy claims about a 30%
cure rate, and religious commitment seems to be the most
helpful factor in avoiding homosexual habits.

Subliminal Message
A subliminal message is a signal or message designed to
pass below (sub) the normal limits of perception. For
example it might be inaudible to the conscious mind (but
audible to the unconscious or deeper mind) or might be
an image transmitted briefly and unperceived consciously
and yet perceived unconsciously. This definition assumes
a division between conscious and unconscious which may
be misleading; it may be better to say that the
subliminal message (sound or image) is perceived by
deeper parts of what is a single integrated mind.
In the everyday world, many have claimed that subliminal
techniques are used in advertising and for propaganda
purposes but officially it is denied. In Russia,
however, there have been reports of subliminal messages.
For example, Pravda has had stories about the discovery
of subliminal messages in advertising from the West.
Origin of the Term
The term subliminal message was popularized in a 1957
book entitled The Hidden Persuaders by Vance Packard.
This book detailed a study of movie theaters that
supposedly used subliminal commands to increase the
sales of popcorn and Coca-Cola at their concession
stands. However, James Vicary (the author of the study)
later admitted the study was fabricated.
In 1973 Wilson Bryan Key's book Subliminal Seduction
claimed that subliminal techniques were in wide use in
advertising. The book contributed to a general climate
of fear with regard to Orwellian dangers (of subliminal
messaging). Public concern was enough to lead the
Federal Communications Commission to hold hearings and
to declare subliminal advertising "contrary to the
public interest" because it involved "intentional
deception" of the public.
Validity
In spite of the popular belief that subliminal messages
are widely used to influence audiences, there is little
evidence that the technique has ever been used on a mass
audience (other than its occasional use by artists who
use it to make an artistic statement). There is no
evidence that subliminal messages have any effect at all
on a viewer or listener, and the current consensus among
marketing professionals is that subliminal advertising
is ineffective and can be counter-productive. The theory
underlying subliminal messages is often considered to be
pseudoscience. However, the concept of subliminal
messages is very popular among conspiracy theorists, and
most people in media-saturated areas (such as the United
States) are familiar with the term.
A number of fringe elements in society have made
occasional claims that subliminal messages can be found
in various forms of popular entertainment. Popular
claims of subliminal commands include the supposed use
of "backward messages" in rock and roll songs.
Conservative activist Donald Wildmon has claimed that
The Walt Disney Company inserted the subliminal command
"SEX" into the animated film The Lion King (see that
article for more information on this). Mainstream
authorities have generally ignored these claims due to
the dubious reputations of their authors.
Discussion
Subliminal perception or cognition, if it exists, can be
considered a subset of unconscious cognition where the

An important question about subliminal perception is:
How much of the unattended or unconscious signal or
message is perceived? That is, is the whole message

Proponents of the power of subliminal messages claim
they gain influence or power from the fact that they

Subliminal Messages in Advertising
A form of subliminal messaging commonly believed to
exist involves the insertion of "hidden" messages into
movies and TV programs. The concept of "moving pictures"
relies on persistence of vision to create the illusion
of movement in a series of images projected at 23 to 50
frames per second; the popular theory of subliminal
messages usually suggests that subliminal commands can
be inserted into this sequence at the rate of perhaps 1
frame in 25 (or roughly 1 frame per second, with a
duration of about 1/25 of 1 second). The hidden command
in a single frame will flash across the screen so
quickly that it is not consciously perceived, but the
command will supposedly appeal to the subconscious mind
of the viewer, and thus have some measurable effect in
terms of behavior.
Another "subliminal" message technique is supposedly to
embed into a printed advertisement certain messages or
symbols which are subtle and perceived only by the
unconscious mind, either to communicate a message or to
increase the attention paid to the printed ad. This
technique, as with subliminal TV advertising, is not
generally regarded as effective.
As to the question of whether subliminal messages are
widely used to influence groups of people e.g.
audiences, there is no evidence to suggest that any
serious or sustained attempt has been made to use the
technology on a mass audience. The widespread reports
that arose in 1957 to the effect that customers in a
movie theatre in New Jersey had been induced by
subliminal messages to consume more popcorn and more
Coca-Cola were almost certainly false. The current
consensus among marketing professionals is that
subliminal advertising is counter-productive. To some
this is because they believe it to be ineffective, but
to most it is because they realise it would be a public
relations disaster if its use were discovered. Many have
misgivings about using it in marketing campaigns due to
ethical considerations.
During the 2000 U.S. presidential campaign, a television
ad campaigning for Republican candidate George W. Bush
showed words (and parts thereof) scaling from the
foreground to the background on a television screen.
When the word BUREAUCRATS flashed on the screen, one
frame showed only the last part, RATS. Democrats
promptly asked the FCC to look into the matter, but no
penalties were ever assessed in the case. The effect
this had on the overall presidential race was unclear;
the Democrats and Al Gore received ridicule for finding
malicious intent in something that could have been a
simple mistake; the Republicans received ridicule for
the lack of attention to detail and Bush's
mispronunciation of "subliminal" (it came out as
"subliminable"). (It bears mentioning that the
"subliminal message" is easily viewable when the ad is
played at regular speed. If the message were truly
subliminal, that would not be the case.)
The most common ways of making one of these messages are
playing a string of images each lasting 1/3000th of a
second, words scrolling across a screen just fast enough
so the viewer can only pick out one at a time, and using
pictures to provoke the primal instincts in the viewer.
Primal insticts are those instincts that command killing
or sexually reproducing. The 4 most used words to invoke
these insticts are: SEX, F***, KILL, and DIE.

Why does everything with you freaks have to be about politics or religion.
Can't a TV show like BSG just be about a TV show? I've enjoyed the series so
far, and have not been left feeling there were any "hidden messages"
regarding homosexuals or anything else. Do yourself, and the rest of us a
favor, and stfu and just watch tv. Fucking christ man.
