Airports are Ugly [message #44671] So, 22 Mai 2005 08:49

There I stood Thursday, waiting for four and a half hours at the Madison
airport while my flight got delayed later and later, due to weather, then
equipment checks, then weather again, then the fact that the pilot wasn't
authorized to fly during certain conditions! I finally had to reschedule
for the next day.

I brought a book along that I thought would last me the whole week-long
trip - "Anthology at the End of the Universe." I ended up reading the whole
thing while I waited for my plane. Fortunately, I also have "Wish You Were
Here" - so I'll start on that book next.

What made it bearable was the airport description from Dirk Gently -
airports are ugly! And each time they told me more information would be
available in 10 minutes, I kept thinking, "Ten actual minutes, or 10
just-one-minutes, which could keep us here all day" - and in fact, did.

Adams helped me find humor in what was a fantastically frustrating time, and
books based on him helped me pass the time. Holistic for sure.

(The next day, after boarding the plane, the flight was delayed 30 minutes,
while they examined a faulty warning light. When done, the pilot explained
that he thought everything was okay, and it was a system that they usually
didn't need anyway. I told my neighbor I'd have been happier if he'd just
said we were ready to go.)

Well he generally has a knack of making unbearable situations better - books
in general have the same power to an extent.

First, if I make no sense or offend, please forgive because I write this
while very, very drunk, and top-post only for this disclaimer....

AATEOTU is an interesting book. Because each chapter is written by
different people, it can't be overall liked or hated. I enjoyed some of the
chapters, thought some were so-so, and others where junk. If you're a fan,
it's worth having in the collection. (the froup name suggests your a fan,
but decide for yourself). There was one chapter by a person that hadn't
read the books in quite some time, used to be a fan, but upon recent review
was disappointed (Susan Sizemore's essay, "You can't go home again - damn
it!"). Her perspective is one of a person that once "got it" but no longer
does - and thinks it all boring and tedious. It's quite sad, really, the
way she documents it, as if to say she's "grown up" (my quotes, not hers),
and yet I think it's sad that she doesn't get it any longer. All in all, a
good read.

Good thing, too, because it's one of the few things keeping me going these
days! Life seems gloomy, but Adams has an uncanny way of making me smile.

We don't mind if people don't make sense! How long have you been here to
think that we would?!

Especially during GCSEs. They suck. Believe it.
