Okay, a few folks posted here after the movie was released that they
thought the senseless slaughter of the jewelled crabs was uneccesary,
gratuitous, and not in keeping with the whole HHGTG thing....
But I've been trawling through the vastness that is Googles groups
archives, in particular those for this group, and I happened to find
this message, posted by Douglas Adams himself in 1998

There's a lot of misunderstanding about the fact that this is going to
be a Disney movie. Disney is a huge media empire and it doesn't just
make Walt Disney Pictures. Yes, it made Bambi (first movie I ever saw),
but it also made Pulp Fiction. I see the HHGG movie as a kind of mixture
of the two, with a lot of cute little deer having their heads blown off,
possibly to the sound of Tchaikovsky.

....Which puzzles me, because the crabs were in both the radio series (Fit
the Ninth) and the first book:
<quote>
Meanwhile, the natural forces on the planet Vogsphere had been working
overtime to make up for their earlier blunder. They brought forth
scintillating jewelled scuttling crabs, which the Vogons ate, smashing
their shells with iron mallets; /tall aspiring trees with breathtaking
slenderness and colour which the Vogons cut down and burned the crab meat
with;/ elegant gazelle like creatures with silken coats and dewy eyes
which the Vogons would catch and sit on. They were no use as transport
because their backs would snap instantly, but the Vogons sat on them
anyway.

I wonder what the nay-sayers would have thought if /that/ scene had made

I noticed during my second or third viewing of the movie that the crab, the
one that gets squashed by the door, looks a lot like Jar-Jar Binks in the
close-up that shows just its eyes on stalks, and that resemblance made the
squashing and subsequent splattering of said crab onto the Vogons as our
heroes make their escape all the more funny. The effect was heightened when
I saw Star Wars III. I couldn't help giggling when Binks made his
thankfully brief and silent appearance.

Funny, I always thought that Stravinski would be more appropriate for
head-blow-off scenes.

Jar-Jar Binks is the greatest of all Star Wars characters ever.
Don't make me crosspost to alt.fan.starwars.jar-jar-binks.die.die.die. We
all love him there! (That's not a joke. We really do. The name is a long
story.)

He may have meant "gronk". You like Jar-Jar? That would make sense since
the character was designed to appeal to younger viewers, which you would
have been one of when Episode I came out.

As explained else-thread, "ITYKM" was my fat fingers failing to type
accurately, ellide the "k".
As to "Gonk": Gonk was/is the greatest of all Star Wars characters
ever.
Do a google image search for "gonk" and you'll see plenty of pictures
of the 'power droid' that famously was in the first Star Wars film (by
production date, i.e. episode 4) that famously went "gonk!" a lot
whilst R2-D2 and C-3PO were in custody by the jawas. Basically a
large-ish dark-grey box on legs.

I like Jar-Jar because he was the kewlest!!1!!!1!111!1!one!11!11!!!!
There are theories stating that he was actually the master to Darth Sidious
before Sidious went bad, and that he's a master Jedi who just never reveals
himself.
But in the end Jar-Jar just rocks.
