The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie is bad. Really bad. You just
won't believe how vastly, staggeringly, jaw-droppingly bad it is. I mean,
you might think that The Phantom Menace was a hopelessly misguided attempt
to reinvent a much-loved franchise by people who, though well-intentioned,
completely failed to understand what made the original popular - but that's
just peanuts to the Hitchhiker's movie. Listen.
And so on...

I read a smidgen of the review (stupid but sooo compelled) and my heart
sank. I hope this guy's overreacting, but if even a small percentage of
what he said is cut/rearranged from the book, is... this will be a travesty.

I saw a rough cut of the film back in February, and worrying about what to
expect beforehand made that showing all the more enjoyable.
So I'm rather pleased to say that the recent negativity-fest has completely
and utterly made my day!
Why? Because it meant I was nervous all over again when I went to see the
final, finished print at the cast & crew screening in Leicester Square this
morning :-)
I've spent the rest of the day on a complete high, humming the daft title
music, and taking my dog out to the park again because it didn't seem fair
that I should be the only one having an utterly brilliant Sunday :-)
Hurrah!
Sean.

He has just said that the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is in there after all
- it wasn't in the earlier cut that he saw but it is in the final cut.

Sounds like this guy's interested in seeing the radio script and the TV
script lovingly and exactly recreated on the screen, which of course is not
going to happen and if it did would be in complete contradiction to what
happened when h2g2 moved from radio to book, book to TV and somewhere in
there onto vinyl, CD and text game. His list of things that aren't in the
movie includes a lot of items that just don't fit after 25 years--drinking's
not nearly as socially acceptable--and other things are only in single, even
obscure versions, like Marvin humming Pink Floyd. This is going to be so
amazingly amazing.

Oh, I have no trouble with being held responsible for what I say. I

How philiosophical. All I was pointing out was that at least my fears
were based on something concrete. Claiming "This will be amazing"
without any actual reason is just talk... And since it seemed everyone
was getting all upset every time something negative was written, I
just felt like doing the same on groundless positive statements...

Two things:
One, I didn't get any of that at all.
Two, we bottom post as opposed to top posting here, so if you wouldn't mind
writing replies at the bottom of other people's messages it'd be
appreciated. Thanks. :-)

Sorry, John, I prefer to post at the top and will continue to do so. In the
days DNA himself used to post here, he was a top-, middle- and bottom-poster
depending on what was needed to get the job done. *Nostalgic Sigh* Ah, the
good ol' days...
Where to post is a matter of personal taste; I prefer not to have to scroll
through previous messages to reach new material. Also, some might think
it's really not on asking others to change the way they do things to satisfy
an arbitrary preference and might even take offense where obviously none is
intended.
The bits of my post you didn't understand were sarcasm on my part regarding
the use of throw-away phrases like "excuse me" or "if you wouldn't mind" or
"needless to say." The friction heat generated by typing these meaningless
and unnecessary fillers is contributing to global warming and causing
keyboards to wear out prematurely, thus adding to an already alarmingly
prodigious volume of trash generated worldwide, causing further strain on
limited resources and overworking an underpowered recycling industry.
"Stupider positivie" is my pointing out an awkward turn of phrase and
typographical error in the previous message.
Peace and clear skies,
Chiggy.

God rest his soul.......not many out here in Usenet land are creative enough
thinkers to be able to go with the flow and post top, bottom, and tween.
For me I don't care, what is important is the content of the posts and
meeting interesting peoples :)

Exactly the point, actually. Posting at the context where it makes most
sense.

It's not an arbitrary preference, although there can be things said for
bith styles, the fact is that it is definately and without question
easiest to follow a conversation where one style is selected. In this
froup, through mutual consent, we have selected posting in context. We
politely sak you to do the same, that's all. As for the fact that you
prefer not to scroll to read new material, well, it won't help you that
you top post as long as the rest of us stick to the other convetion,
will it?
Posting in the context also requires people to think about snipping
material they are not replying to. The theory is that the conversation
is easier to follow, and many people agree that this is actually so. The
thing is, that when the styles are mixed, it's impossible to read anything.

I see. Well, the throwaway phrases are called "politeness". I wouldn't
expect you to understand, it's something the rest of the world uses in
order to communicate. Please feel free to ignore it, but don't expect
people to stop being either polite or bottom-posting.

Not hippy.
I didn't ask anyone to do anything, neither do I care how they compose their
posts. That was John.
Once upon a time this was a place of light and meaningless chatter with a
sort of h2g2-ish flavor. Things were weird, wild and largely tax-free.
Now, I sort of feel like I've got to fling myself into a defensive crouch
behind the drinks trolley, towel at the ready. (Where is the drinks
trolley?) I was being flippant. You know, fluster a Vegan snow lizard,
that kind of thing, what?

You do realise, there's such a thing as over-posturing ? The

And top-posting is annoying... I had no idea this was a reaction to

Oh Zarquon... I don't even know why I bother. The header is fine in the
original; you, or your computer, cut it; not that it matters as it's
perfectly clear in any case, although it might require some vague sort of
effort.
You guys do have an inkling of when Adams wrote the Guide, right? You are
aware of the surrounding social tumult of the late 1960s and early 1970s and
the insidious transformation into the Reagan/Thatcher Era? You know, the
conversion of individualism into the lockstep corporatism that now
predominates? You are aware the Guide is a direct reaction to that? Right?
Did you not learn any Ancient Galactic history when you were a child?
Annoying top posting just to be annoying and different IS THE ENTIRE FUCKING
POINT!!! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHEEEEOOOOWWWW!!!
Ahh... That's better.
Oh dear. Still don't get it? That's all right. In any event, I won't be
snipping, posting at the bottom or altering my headers unless I suddenly
change my mind of my own volition. If it makes you feel better, please,
correct my posts to your own specifications once you've downloaded them.
You might try burying them in soft peat and using them as fire-lighters
first.
And, I don't like tea.
Chiggy.

Probably the true word is "in the context". I apologize for my English,
it is not my native language, and even practice can't get you all the way.
Well, it's a common misconception that you either toppost or bottompost,
or rather, it's a common misconception that bottom-posting means posting
in the bottom of the message.
The "right" way to do it (acknowleding that this is just one definition
of "right") is answering each bit you are responding to just under what
you are responding to, in order to make it easier to follow the
conversation. You nice example of snipping is another tool to make this
work.
Thanks for the effort.

I never claimed you did, did I? That would be easy to identify if you
had just answered at the point you meant I did. As it is, I don't know
what in my posting you are referring to.

Sorry, I was actually trying to be quite nice about this, explaining why
we prefer the bottom-posting style. The only time I really got a bit
nasty here was in your attack of my usage of "excuse me", which I found
rather unnecessary and, well, forgive me (I know, you'll hate me for
just saying that), but rereading it I still can't see it as being
anything but a rude attack. If it wasn't meant as such, I apologize. I
offer you this genuine cup of stuff-almost-but-not-entirely-unlike-tea
as a token of my deep-felt sadness to have insulted you.

Weren't trying very hard to nice, were you? As you can see from this...
"I see. Well, the throwaway phrases are called "politeness". I wouldn't
expect you to understand, it's something the rest of the world uses in order
to communicate. Please feel free to ignore it, but don't expect people to
stop being either polite or bottom-posting."
....you implied I expected or even wanted people to change the way they post.
I could not care less how people compose. (Or decompose for that matter.)
It's a creative process, unique, or at least should be unique, to each
individual.
Besides my post being rude, it was funny. Also, I wasn't attacking you; I
was poking fun at you. I don't hate you, and this is an unfair
characterization. A rude and unfunny attack would be something along the
lines of:
"Well, excuse me, but that's an even stupider statement than being
negative based only on MJ Simpåsons review, because that's being
postivie based on... NOTHING!"
Having written this as your very first interaction with me, you might
recognize it. Whatever it is that's not me you are angry about, I'm sorry
you can't deal with it. Why not have a little lie-down? I would, however,
request that you lay off innocent bystanders in the meantime. Just because
you've just had unhappy love affair doesn't mean the rest of us shouldn't
have a good time. Message ends.
Chiggy.

No, no, no. That was sarcasm. Abuse goes like this:
"Shut up, shut up, shut up, you bloody useless loony! Go die! I hate you!"
It's not likely you'll ever find a post here by me in that ilk. And, for
the record, that was merely an example and should not be taken personally,
unless it's something you like. Share and enjoy.

I usually follow the posting style after the 2nd poster to see if we are top
or bottom feeding.
But I love a good argument on what is accepted as the proper way to post in
a usenet group.

Well, the above is a prime example of me being sarcastic - take it or
leave it :-)

Oh, and none of my postings tried to be funny? I see. I will go join a
school of "How to be funny in 42 days (and as a bonus you will receive a
free paper napkin)" in the hope that I will one day reach your glorious
level of funniness (that was sarcasm too, and even an attempt to be
funny. I seems I will have to point this out explicitly).

My very first interaction with you? Hardly. Apart from other ongoing
threads, I would say we have bumped into me earlier in this froup lots
of times, when you felt like droppingt in. You may not remember me, but
I remember you. Besides, that was definately _not_ a personal attack,
but an example in the context of earlier discussions _in the same bloody
thread_. If you want to take it personal, fine, but don't claim that I'm
rude because I didn't put a throwaway quote from Douglas Adams in the
middle of my rantings.

P.S.: Apparantly if you write a funny P.S. it's allowed to write
anything in the message, no matter how rude it is, because you're
clearly just being funny. Thus I would like to take this opportunity to
say "You ask a glass of water!" so that you are not allowed to be angry

I've tried being nice, as is traditional here at afda. I've tried being
cute, another reliable tradition here at afda. You don't get it. Fine.
I'll do it the hard way.
You're being a genuine asshole for no apparent reason. This is not in any
way funny; it is inappropriate and abusive. I offered up, as is the
intention of Usenet, an opinion. You decided I had "trashed" Simpson's
review and were very rude about it to me in a public post. Then, you
followed me to another message string (or another part of the same string)
and continued to harangue me. I gave you the benefit of the doubt, assuming
some other aspect of your life is amiss and you've picked me as your
whipping boy. This is not a role I care to take on and have asked you by
private email to stop. You have refused.

Insulting Kaare = you asshole.
Kaare's one of the older regulars here. He's been around longer than me.
He knows how to behave - apparently you don't. My killfile has another

I'm truly sorry you feel that way, but that's exactly how I feel. I'm
sorry, but I really tried to be polite to you.
For the record:
1) I didn't try to "be rude to you in a public post". I was taking part
in a public discussion, in which your posting was an example of exactly
what I was talking about, namely that being positive without any good
reason is no better than being negative with no reason, and, well, we
negativists did have reasons. I was not, in my own opinion, being
personally rude to you, and I apologize if you felt it that way.
2) There have been two parts in this discussion
a) One being about top-posting. To the best of my ability I have been
consistently polite about that, and only explained the reason why we
choose the bottom-posting (or better: in-context-posting) style in afda.
You on the other hand have been consistently negative, trying to hide it
in attempts at witticism
b) The other part is about whether either of us have been insulting or
rude. You accuse me of being rude and an asshole, while you yourself
have been consistently personal and angry in your post (again badly
hidden in poor jokes and witticisms). I will not apologize for anything
I have said in that discussion. It is still my feeling that the rude
part is on your behalf, but I suggest we stop the discussion at this
point, and hold the peace.
3) I do not appreciate your personal remarks. That is very much against
etiquette on usenet or everywhere else. Please take your own advice.
4) I know about traditions of afda. Do you?

Well I like Dave he is honest about his feelings and did try to get
along.....what I find interesting on Usenet is the lack of honesty......if
you think someone is being a buttwipe just say so and move on.....plonk em
or skip their posts. As to masturbating....everytime you do you kill a
kitten......so think real hard next time ;-)

I can get along if you can... And of course I know the traditions of afda.
I've been posting here since about 1996. Here's a bit of archive material

Not to rain on your froup, but isn't it: "Hey! That guy's one hoopy
frood?"
Hence a phrase which has passed into hitch hiking slang, as in "Hey,
you sass that hoopy Jon Nelson? There's a frood who really knows where
his towel is." (Sass: know, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy:
really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy.)

This is all well and good and, in fact, is true. :-)
But you might recall that there are a few occurences where someone
uses
the word as an adjective in the books. At least I think so ... hold
on
a sec, let me check the archives ... <pops off to the FAQ and checks>
... ah yes, there it is: froody V:25/214. V:6/52. Which means (I
think) that it's in _Mostly Harmless_, Chap. 25 p. 214, and Chap. 6,
p.
52. I know, I'm getting pretty detailed here - but I think one of the
references is when Ford was "feeling froody in his new suede shoes" or
the like. So I suppose we can still be a "froody group". Or just
froup. Ah, froup it all anyway. Who gives a froup? Heheheh.

I think "froup" should mean "froody group" as in a group of froods.
Any
forms of "froup" should probably reflect this.

My theory is that Kaare got involved in a serious nail-clipping accident,
and is too intimidated to write with his nose.

Yes, I remember the thread. I don't think I need to quote bits of it for
the regulars from back then to remember me, though. Those were the days, eh?
Interesting, by the way, that you were bottom-posting back then. That
was actually what I was referring to, when I asked you whether you know
the tradiotions of afda.
Let's end this discussion. I don't think either of us is reading afda
for these kinds of abusive postings, and apparently we both feel that
the other is the one being an asshole. Perhaps we have both been a
little too harsh?
