.... I don't get it. I feel incredibly thick, but I'm just missing the big
picture, I guess. Who were the three "Designer" fugitives and where'd they
escape to? Is the planet supposed to be Earth? Please explain.
I'll be posting thoughts/questions on SL&TFATF eventually too. I thought it
was brilliant despite the fact that I'm still trying to comprehend the
story.

Only one escaped. It's meant to be Ronald Reagan, onetime President of the
United States of America (source: Douglas Adams) who was very popular, but
was responsible in part for the Watergate scandal. I think. I wasn't
really around at the time.

Ah, I liked that one too. Post if you want anything clarified.

Waitasec. How do we know it's Ronald Reagan? Or Nixon, or whoever. You're
saying this story was political commentary? Did Adams clarify this in the
magazine that YZPIS appeared in? Still confused. Does this have anything
to do with the continuity of the previous four or one succeeding novel?

Nothing to do with the other novels at all. It's just that at the end of
the Salmon of Doubt version of the story, he says that the model was a
Reagan. And DNA said that it was Reagan in interviews et cetera. So...
That's how we know.

Hmm. So I'm assuming he was criticizing the man. How though, isn't
entirely clear. Didn't first time readers of the story wonder what the
point was, since it gives no clue as to the identity of the fugitive? It
was the best build-up to... nothing, like the publishing company forgot to
add the last paragraph that made it all click.

DNA made the change to cleraly identify it as a Reagan after coming in
for criticism from the religious brigade who assumed it was refering
to Jesus. DNA said that this was aboultely not the case.
Ronald Reagan was the butt of much humour both in the US and abroad.
The BBC show "Not the Nine O'Clock News" in particular did many
hilarious skits featuring him.

Don't worry. It doesn't affect the other books in the slightest, and
noone really got the story.
Actually, most people thought the story was about Jesus, and Douglas was
harrassed by religous groups to the point where he actually added
another sentence in the end of the story:
"He also heard the Official from the Safety and Civil Reassurance
Administration issue instructions to the effect that the missing escape
capsule contained a 'Reagan' and that the planet in ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha
must be made 'perfectly safe'."

The babbling about the "shining city on a hill" gave me the impression
he was saying Jesus was a personality prototype, but in fact it was a
reference to some rather biblical imagery Reagan had been using in his
campaign speeches. Being a UKian and rather young back then I missed it,
but it was enough that others might have spotted it. It was only made
explicit when republished because it was no longer topical.

I have just listened to an interview with Douglas recorded in Houston
in 1988. He said people didn't get it (this was the original version in
the Comic Relief book) and he re-read and realised it was hard to
understand.
So, don't worry as even the author was confused!

If you substitute Contragate for Watergate the original post would be
right. No-one could ever prove he knew about it though. As we now know that
Reagan was already in the early stages of Alheimer's disease, maybe he
didn't?
Ollie North destroyed evidence of Contragate, and is now a radio show host.
He used to be a colonel, but I pity anyone who had to follow his orders.
Nixon was different from Reagan, though. He approved the use of government
surveillance to spy on the Democratic party. He thouroughly deserved being
run out of office. His apologists have tried to repair his reputation, but
nothing can acheive that. His actions were against democracy itself.
Gordon Liddy was involved in the Watergate burglary, and is now a radio
show host. He tells anyone who will listen his alternative invented story
about why they broke in.
Is this a pattern? Do all republicans like to listen to radio shows hosted
by criminals?
