Quandary Phase - Is it just me, or... [message #38683] Mi, 18 Mai 2005 15:02

[having now listened to the first three eps]

Is it just me, or does the material of the book SLATFATF just not lend
itself to being adapted into the format of the Radio HHGTTG?

Perhaps its because they've tried to compress the whole story into 4
episodes, but it just doesn't seem to 'work' very well.

For example, the scene in which Arthur goes home and, basically,
describes everything in the house out loud so we, the audience, know
what's going on is just wrong for the format. It wouldn't have been
done in the primary or secondary phases. I'm not sure how it could have
been done differently, but it just seems wrong to me.

The Tertiary phase seemed to work a bit better as there were usually
several characters in any given scene so the dialogue could set the
scene, but not in bits of the Quandary phase.

Gripe over.

Ric.

ps Nice to have Stephen Fry in the radio series though... :o)

SLATFATF and MH were written as books. The first two phases were written
for radio, and LTUAE was adapted from a Doctor Who movie treatment that DNA
had written and not gotten done.

SLATFATF and MH will be the two radio series which don't work as well as the
others because they weren't written to be on telly/radio, they were literary
works.

That makes sense, I think.

I'm just disappointed that they didn't play "Tunnel of Love" in this
week's episode. I know there was pseudo-Dire Straits playing in the
background, but then it went and spoiled it with strings instead of a
cool guitar solo :o(

Sure - still Fat Sam just had to mix it together afterwards like with
the Marving-humming-Pink-Floyd bit :-)

Hmmmm....Now there's a challenge....Edit out the background music while
leaving the vocals in-tact and replace with a different piece of
music....Might be possible, depending how much overlaying of tracks
tehre is....A job for the weekend methinks...

Or possibly, get the 5.1 surround sound mix, and hope that the dialogue
and music are on different channels...

like the episode with the correct piece of music inserted....

For me the background music is all wrong. Far too much of that string
keyboard stuff. They paid a great deal of attention to the background noises
previously which is one of the reasons it sounded so good.
Also they cut too much. The narrator could have done some of the
narrating-the-book bits instead of chopping them or having Arthur act
stupid. What about that bit with Arthur eating the other bloke's biscuits ?
Classic Adams humour !

I think these are really difficult to translate to radio as they have less
dialogue and less guide entries. They were written in a style more typical
of novels than the previous books. For me the work needs more animation and
that could be done with the background SFX as much as anything.

It's nice to listen to these, but they aren't the quality of the old series
and don't have the humour, style or intrigue.

Well, yes, you are, but we won't go into that. The biscuits thing is a
story Arthur tells Fenchurch to prove how weird his life is when he's first
met her.

As I remember it, it's something Arthur relates to Fenchurch. Possibly
in the park. I can't remember when because I keep imagining it's while
waiting for her train, but that's probably only because both the story
and that scene involve sitting in similar establishments.

"Perhaps you can do what I can do," he said, and walked straight out of her
upstairs front door.

The record got to the good bit.

For me that was one of the best parts of the book.

Hitchhiker's is full of such funny stories - little gems ! I think it has
already been shown that it doesn't matter what order they come in ;o)

It happened to DNA in 1976, according to Salmon of Doubt.
