Does she play guitar? I could be wrong, but I thought she was just a
singer.
Every time I hear one of her songs, it sounds like a pop ballad. The
punk image thing doesn't make sense. It's like Kelly Clarkston
grimacing and wearing black, carrying an electric guitar, wtf?

Yeah, she plays rhythm guitar on her songs. She's a reasonable
guitarist on her solo acoustic sets too.

She sings some poppy ballads but also does punky stuff too. Most of
her recent singles have been the slower, crappier (IMO) songs from her
album...

Buy/download her second album. She does quite a bit of fast, shouty,
screamy stuff. I guess she thought that the poppy ballads would sell
better as singles and get more radio play...

I prefer to refer to Britney/Xtina/etc. as 'pop tarts'. I'd fuck them
- but I wouldn't make them coffee in the morning.

I don't think this is the case. Her whole schtick doesn't ring true.
It's all part of a prefabricated product. I suspect she's no little
bitch at all, but rather a somewhat talented singer who is being told
how to act and enjoying the benefits of her carefully manufactured
image.
